I love this idea! laugh

Poor Bruce! He's going to be more miserable than ever! Although, he's not my favourite, so if you want to break his spine for story purposes that's ok by me.(I did not mean to sound THAT callous! Sorry.)

The search only lasted five days??? After all he's done for you people??? Shocking!

Now where did Clark get his new costume? Or is it really someone else playing hero and Superman's lying naked in a hole somewhere? Frankly I like both options... goofy

I am intrigued. laugh

"Just my luck," he complained out loud to absolutely no one. "Boulders fall down from the sky - where else are they going to land but directly on my head? Boy Scout, if there's any damage to my home, I'm holding you responsible!"
OK, I couldn't help but laugh here, even if it would normally annoy the day lights out of me--complaining about what Superman wasn't able to do when he did so much.....

Poor Bruce--just how is he going to catch up to Clark and convince him that he isn't Really Batman but Superman. (I'm assuming that the "boulder" that he felt was Clark who ended up in the bat cave when he hit the ground.

MORE SOON!!! I can't handle Lois in Mourning.

And how embarassed is Clark going to be when he finds out that he couldn't remember Superman but remembered Batman? thumbsup
Wow, what a premise, Lara! Clark flies off into space to smash Nightfall into smithereens, gets a knock on his head, passes out, and crashes straight down into the Batcave! Meanwhile, Batman himself is confined to his bed with a broken back, so the Batcave is empty. Obviously Clark wakes up in the Batcave, amnesiac, finds and tries on a Batsuit and believes that the cave and suit are his own, and that he himself is Batman!

Fantastic! Lara, I'm sure you read that great Superman-as-Batman comic, Speeding Bullets. Superman really does make a great Batman! (But don't forget, he so needs Lois to make him red and blue again!) laugh

Well, I'm going to guess that the utility belt also survived (if nothing else on his costume did--it was bound to be the least destructible part of what Clark was wearing up there) and so, Bruce is partly to blame for Clark's confusion--Wouldn't you think that you were batman if you were wearing the utility belt AND in the bat cave?
Oooh! Thanks for the feedback!!

There's a few things I guess I may not have explained well enough...

- the fireball that crashed through the ground and landed inside a cavern: it's Clark and he's ended up inside the batcave. Which explains why Bruce felt the wave; the batcave is partly below the mansion.

- Bruce is only miserable because he's an invalid now. He feels sorry that he cannot be Batman and help out as he used to. And he's hurt enough that he thinks there's no possible way he'll ever BE Batman again. You'll understand a lot more about him in a later part. For now, all you really needed to know is that he's hurt, he can't move out of his bed and he's frustrated as hell.

Onto the actual FDK. smile

gr8shadesofElvis - thank you!

I didn't break his spine. Bane did. wink That's taken right out of the Batman comics, btw. I didn't make any of it up. He really had his spine broken at one point, back in 1993.

Well, I don't know how long they usually do look for missing people, but considering all the resources they put into it, it's likely it wouldn't have lasted too long. This doesn't mean that there aren't people still looking for him, just that the government has decided he couldn't be found.

Quote

That was more obscure that I wanted it to be. Clark landed in the batcave. ...he did land in a hole and he is naked, if that helps? wink

Vonceil - thanks for the comments! Yes, the boulder was Clark. And.. um.. as to a mourning Lois, you'll see her come up quite a bit before the end, you realize. I'm sorry. But I haven't broken any toys and don't plan to, so she won't mourn for ever. smile

Oh, I wouldn't say he exactly remembers Batman... You'll see. <g>

Ann! oooh! I had never read that comic, but I found it on eBay just now, though. hehehe! Thanks for the heads up on that. I expect I should be reading it in 2 to 4 weeks. LOL!

Aah, yes. Obviously. blush That clears that up. I thought he thought that he was the bat just from the utility belt that didn't get burned up on his way back to earth.

I still like him naked in the Batcave though. Can you arrange that for future posts? smile1
Yay!! I've been looking forward to this one forever!

Clark looked up at her and tried to crack a weak smile. Ever since Lois had figured out that he was Superman, Clark had gradually allowed himself to let out some of the thoughts and feelings - when he was with her - that he otherwise kept locked up deep inside. His fears, and sometimes, even his failures. Things the rest of the universe was not permitted to know that Clark Kent felt and certainly didn't believe that Superman could feel or even experience. Having someone around who he could talk to was the most precious gift he could ever have asked for.
Aww, poor Clarkie. I wanna cuddle him. Can I cuddle him?

I guess I'll have to make do with cuddling Clarkie Bear.

"You know, this whole 'sharing you with the rest of the world' thing? Not all it's cracked up to be." She laughed nervously as she rested her head in the crook of his shoulder. "What if you don't... and this is the last... and... Clark? I'm, um, I'm really scared. I don't think I can... if..." Lois's thoughts went unfinished as the barrage crumbled and tears ran down from her eyes.

"It'll be all right," he whispered softly, smoothing his hand on her back. "It'll be all right," he said again, trying hard to believe it as well.
Awww! *Sniffle*

"He wanted you to have this." He handed Superman one of Batman's utility belts. "There's a rebreather in there. He thought it might be useful. You know... in case you need air up there."
Bruce being hurt isn't funny, but I can't help but think of the How It Should Have Ended

"Whenever you get a 'fly so fast it reverses time itself' gadget on your belt...let me know."

"I'm Batman."

"I know you are."

"It's what I do."

"I know. You say that a lot."

"I carry things on my belt, because I'm Batman."

Anyhoodles, back to the story...

Even though he'd already promised her a million times over that he'd be back, she knew that he might not be able to keep this promise. She knew there was a chance she might never see him again. And though she had told him so many times last night that she loved him, it still didn't seem enough. Lois silently cursed the shroud of secrecy that prevented her from being able to tell him one more time. One last time. It was tearing her apart to have to stand there and pretend that they didn't have a relationship. Pretend, for the rest of the world, that his leaving wasn't slowly destroying her, heart and soul.
Awww, back to the sniffles. I'm lucky I've got Clarkie Bear to hug!

He would do everything to save the pople of Earth, just as they had saved him when his planet had been destroyed. Earth was the only home he'd ever known and he would protect it with his very last breath.
Wow, that part is very powerful. And so Clark.

"But he would have... He wouldn't let... He..." Lois babbled semi-incoherently as the man escorted her gently out of the building and put her in a cab with instructions to take her back to the Daily Planet.

Captured the night before by an amateur cameraman were images of a shady figure holding a silent vigil atop one of the tallest buildings of the city. It stood for some time, unmoving, before suddenly dropping off from the ledge of the structure in one swift move and disappearing into the night in a familiar rustling of fabric.

The Batman.
Dun dun dun!!

I really think this is so cool, the way you fit all this together. You rock!! I can't wait to see more!
Interesting concept. But all I could think of when I saw this "The last thing that went through Superman's mind, as his fists collided heavily with the celestial body, was a fleeting image of Lois, looking lovingly up at him as they flew into the evening sky."
Was the old joke about what is the last thing that goes through a bugs mind when it hits the windshiled? His a**. Laura
Ooh! This looks so interesting! Clark Kent=Batman? I think Bruce Wayne might have something to say about that. Can't wait to see what you have next for us! Hurry back soon. smile

There's nothing better than feedback along with coffee in the morning (well, maybe a Sue fic. *giggles*)

What you guys don't know is that I had this idea *months ago* and have been bugging Jessi with it since... forever. AND, I actually started writing it when I was in Anchorage, back in June. (but no one freak out - it's not going to take me as long to write the other parts, I promise!)

hehehe! My Clarkie says hello to yours, btw. wink

(ahum... we both have build-a-bear teddies named Clark that are dressed in Superman PJs. Heh. We're fangirls. *lol*)

Thanks for the link to the movie. *lol* I'd seen that before, but completely forgot about it. I had the whole office in fits of laughter this morning. hehehe!

Laura - *rofl* if I'd been smart I would have caught that myself and changed it. Stupid fly joke. wink I went on a road trip in the "mountains" (we don't have "real" mountains here, but...) with a friend of mine once and every time a bug hit the windshield, he would tell me that joke. The trip lasted four and a half hours... By the time we got to our destination, I wanted to run him through his own windshield. *lol* Thanks for reminding me, though. I had a real good laugh!!

ETA -- Oh! Laura, you snuck in here while I was typing. *lol* Thanks for the comments! I'll be back as soon as I can.

Oooh! And BTW... I kind of expected Ann to post pics (*giggles*) but since she didn't, here's one from Batman #497. Which, I believe is from the part of Knightfall called "Broken Bat".

Great idea! Clark falls back to earth after destroying Nightfall and now he thinks he's Batman! lol

Can't wait to read more!
Wayyy interesting. I have to admit, I don't know a thing about Batman LOL, but I still like the premise! New stories are so the way to end the work day. smile

Gaahhh. I googled "Superman, Speeding Bullets", and what did I find? This:

[Linked Image]

Impressive, eh? No? Anyway, that's Superman-as-Batman. Please note that the guy is flying.

Oh well. I did come across other pictures, too, when I googled "Superman, Speeding Bullets". This one, for example. Well, the guy in the picture doesn't remind me too much of Batman, but... he's kind of... well... eh... (can't find the right adjective) anyway, isn't he? goofy

[Linked Image]

Ann
Symbolicangel - thank you! I'm happy you think it's a good idea. smile

Jen - oh yeah, stories at the end of the day are great. And at the beginning... and the middle and... ok, ok. *lol* I don't think you need to know much about Batman, since it's not really going to be Batman anyway... hehehe! wink The rest is hopefully explained well enough that you don't need to have read any comics or even have seen the movies to understand.

Ann... omg... rotflol that second image is really scary. hehehe!

More? What more? You mean... I have to write more of this? aaahhh!

Just kidding!!

Well, Sue made me promise to have it ready for beta by Friday morning, so there you go...
<taps foot>

Where's part 2, huh? Huh, huh, huh? You've kept me hanging here for long enough - it's okay to torture your readers... but your beta? Come on! Yeah, yeah, I know you gave me some sneaks... but those only last for so long. goofy <sigh> I keep checking my inbox but it simply isn't there...

<checks fdk thread, sees Lara's last comment>

Erm... well, contrary to plans, progress has been really slow on part 2.

Life really got in the way this week. frown (more like life, the universe and everything... honestly.)

This said, most of it is written now and so that means that my sweet little betas (though DJ with a whip doesn't really qualify as *sweet*!) will be getting their hands on part 2 sometime Friday morning.

But....... things being what they are, don't anyone blow a gasket (*lol*) if part two isn't posted by Friday at noon! I don't really expect to be able to post before late Sunday night or Monday morning.

There is a line I read somewhere - I really think it was in C.'s If I Were You - where Lois says that she didn't worry nearly enough about Superman going to stop Nightfall. If she'd known that it was Clark going up there, her anxiety level would have been very different. And you proved that here - Lois never would have dreamed that there was anything Superman couldn't do, but now that she knows it is Clark, it almost doesn't matter whether he can or can't do it, she is going to worry either way. That is such a real feeling, and you portray it very well here.

And for a short, much too short moment, the rest of the world melted away; there was no one else, there was no asteroid and this wasn't goodbye.
whinging

Quote
The entire planet seemed to hold its breath as Superman took off to the sky, that morning. Cameras from every media, every news agency on the globe were pointed directly at him and throughout the world, millions of people watched anxiously as the Man of Steel headed towards the Nightfall asteroid.

and

Around the world, on every TV screen, people saw the very same images, captured by an EPRAD satellite: footage of the asteroid being blown up into tiny little bits of itself. Then, a voice from ground control, confirming that the target had indeed been destroyed. And, finally, static as the satellite was hit full force by a flying boulder.

and

Every reporter had left; all headed back to their newspapers, radio and TV stations with stories of the destruction of Nightfall to tell. Every reporter but one, who now stood, frozen, in front of the main view screen in EPRAD's broadcast center.
I love this imagery. The hope and joy of the world contrasted with the worry and despair of one woman.

Quote
The search for Superman lasted five long days. But the Man of Steel was nowhere to be found.

On the evening of the fifth day, radars and satellites were returned to their normal uses. The desperate search for the man who had single-handedly saved the planet was abandoned. Government officials had him officially listed as missing in action. The people of the earth mourned the loss of their greatest hero.

As the sun rose the next morning, Bruce Wayne turned on the TV sets that sat on the desk at the foot of his bed. Now only a shadow of the man he had once been, there was no longer anything he could do to help his fellow Gothamites. Still, he kept informed of what was going on in his city, turning on the news each morning as he woke up, if only for the sake of staying sane.

But what he saw that morning made him wonder if he'd lost his mind.

The Batman.
OMFG!

Lara, you have captured me hook, line and sinker. I love this. I love the plot, I love the writing style, I love the serious vibe.

No time to read part two now, but I'll be back.
