He looked at her in surprise.

Ouch!!!!
That hurt! But what a great re-use of Lois's words to Clark from the show, "I love you like a brother". Clark's words get even more painful and perfect when we remember that Lois really is his foster sister, in a way.
“We're best friends. If you want to belong to someone, Clark, belong to me.”
“There are things about me that you don't know, Lois, that you may never know.”
Are you sure, Clark?
“Just promise me you'll talk to your parents about this first?”
“How do you know I haven't already?”
She smiled sadly at him. “I told you, I know you. I can tell.”

some sense into him!
