Gentle readers - I just wanted to step in to clarify one point.

When Becky dropped her token it was at the moment of her death. The canon sounded signaling the death of a tribute before the mine went off so she was already dead when the mine was triggered. thumbsup

Becky died of natural causes even though it might appear that it was the detonation of the mine that killed her. cool

Please keep in mind that this is our little secret. Don't say a word to Clark.

All true, but Clark doesn't yet realize that she died of natural causes. He thinks she died in the explosion...and the more time he has to contemplate it, the more unhappy he's going to be.

Soory Anne, I had intended to include that in my comment and at the last second forgot to. I knew that because we had discussed it beforehand.

I have edited my earlier post.

I was prepared to read a story on how Clark would handle his super powers while trying to keep it a secret while playing the game, along with him sticking to his principles of not killing. Instead we get Clark conveniently getting exposed to kryptonite and Lois having to save him. So disappointing.

Sorry you're disappointed--but the kryptonite exposure won't last forever, and a person doesn't need to have superpowers to find themselves in a situation where their principles and the reality don't quite mesh.

Also, Clark doesn't find the kryptonite convenient at all. laugh

This story is an old-fashioned nail biter! So glad to see a new installment.

Whenever Clark faces Kryptonite it is NEVER convenient.

Quote
“Eager for the Games to begin, I see!” Marcius exclaimed when he walked in, with Rosaline following close behind him. Clark gave him a look that would have warned off most people, but Marcius was oblivious. “Rosaline has your tribute uniform. Once you’re dressed, she’ll escort you to the hovercraft that will take you to the arena.”
These people, Marcius especially behave as if Clark and the other tributes are going on a long distance hike! How cruel and indifferent they are to their situation.

Quote
Clark caught her and held her up until she managed to steady herself. He looked at her sorrowfully, knowing that Haver was right — Becky was dying, and there was nothing anyone could do to save her, not even him.
Poor Becky! She should be home with family and friends, not serving as sport for the bored Captiolites.

Quote
Platinum had a glowing green pendant suspended by a chain around her neck. The piece of Kryptonite wasn’t large, but it was enough to harm Clark. A tribute’s token wasn’t supposed to give them an unfair advantage in the arena, but no one except Clark and his parents knew how it affected him. As far as the Gamemakers were concerned, Platinum’s token was just a harmless piece of jewelry.
The appearance of Kryptonite at this stage surprised me quite a bit. But later on the trackers were mentioned and everything fell into place and made sense. On the other hand, several tributes no doubt think Clark will make a very easy target for them to kill. That's where their mistake will begin and end especially since Clark's abilities will return.

Quote
The Peacekeeper grabbed Clark’s arm irritably, keeping him from falling. “Get moving, Nine!”
Speaking of Peacekeepers, where is Trask?

Quote
For a moment, Clark could only stare at the piece of Kryptonite — something that Platinum noticed, though she didn’t know the reason for his fascination. She also noticed his pallor and the way he swayed on his feet and moved his hands to clutch his head. A predatory smile crossed her face.
Just as I thought. She's going after Clark because she senses weakness.

Quote
“Lois!” Clark gasped, finally succeeding at disentangling himself from her. He ducked as she scrambled for the spear that had barely missed her, but instead of trying to kill him, Lois turned and started up the hill away from him.
In Janet Owens' wonderful, The Girl Next Door, it was revealed that Lois means battlemaiden. Excellent name in this case.

Quote
“We’re not allies, Farmboy, but I always did think the underdog deserved a chance,” she called softly before running in the direction of the woods higher up the mountain.
...and so it begins.

Excellent fight sequence KenJ!

I wonder if any of the other tributes have kryptonite jewelry. I hope it's only Platinum who has some.

Yes, Clark was injected with the tracker while he was vulnerable - but once he gets his powers back, won't he expel the tracker?

Yay for Lois saving Clark!

Poor Becky. No sport for the jaded Capitolites at all.

Eagerly awaiting more!

Hi Iolan,

Anne and I had a discussion on that very point and I think that she has reasoned it out.

The tracker is just under the skin so his muscles shouldn't crush it when his powers return and since his skin in invulnerable in order for it to be removed, be would have to pierce the skin in some way.

Why does Clark and Becky answer to the stupid salute; May the odds be with you? Paying respect to a system that is about to kill you for their entertainment is not a system to respect.

Is it because they are fearful the Captiolites would do something to their families, friends and Districts if they don't?

Just a thought.

Poor Clark, what happened to Becky is going to naw at his sensitive, compassionate heart.

Marcius is a Capitolite who has swallowed the Capitol propaganda hook, line, and sinker. He genuinely believes being selected for the Hunger Games is an honor, and doesn't understand why the tributes don't see it that way.

Directly following Kryptonite exposure, Clark was indeed an easy target (which is why Platinum was almost able to kill him). Of course, what Platinum didn't count upon was Lois "I Don't Need Any Allies" Lane coming to his defense.

He's in quiet (but still paranoid) retirement. Snow got bored with his insistence that aliens are real, but didn't eliminate him. He'll be back.

It also means superior. So Lois is a superior battle maiden...which describes her perfectly. smile

Why does Clark and Becky answer to the stupid salute;
Do you mean the hand over the heart salute given by their mentors? It's a District 9 sign of respect and farewell, and using it is actually somewhat rebellious (sort of like when Katniss uses the three-finger salute after Rue's death in the Hunger Games movie and sets off a riot in District 11). Sending the tributes off to the arena is supposed to be a happy occasion, but Haver and Matilda don't agree. They're victors, not Capitolites, and they know that it's probably the last time they'll see Becky and Clark alive--plus, as Matilda keeps hinting, victors may be alive, but what they'll have to deal with after the Games is pretty painful.

Poor Becky... what a tragic fate. whinging And what a gruesome ending. Her family must have been devastated. frown And Clark will feel guilty. It's in his nature, even when it is not his fault. sad

Yeah, keep telling yourself it, Lois. wink As long as you keep saving Clark and don't attacking him, you can call it whatever you want. :p

For Clark's sake I hope somebody finds Platinum and finishes the job. peep

UW,

That was the main reason that she wound up with a fractured collar bone.

Lois didn't kill her, but her right arm is now useless and she will be easy pickings for another tribute.

Since she was part of the career pack, she may try to return to her 'friends' however if she is smart, she will head for the tall timber. It is doubtful that she will be able to defend herself using only one arm.

If she returns to the career pack they will see that she is now a liability and do the deed just to get rid of her.
