Halloween Pranks

I wrote this about a week before Halloween and posted it on FF.net, but I thought I’d post it here as well since Halloween just passed. I don’t know about anyone else, but I love reading holiday-themed stories. Also, I noticed some people posting their challenge stories, and though this doesn’t fall under the guidelines, nor did I intend for it to, I’m glad I’m not the only one posting AFTER Halloween!

I used a combination of a translator and what I know about French. (It’s mandatory in Canadian schools that you take French class from grades 3 – 9.) I didn’t retain much though, so forgive me if any of it is a little off. Translations are at the bottom of the page for anyone needing them!

“Good morning.”

Lois glanced up and smiled at the cheery sound of her fiancé’s voice.

“Well it was a good morning, but it just got great.” She said as she accepted the cup of coffee he brought for her.

“Busy night, huh?” Lois asked casually as she sipped from the steamy mug.

“Very.” Clark said in agreement, assuming Lois had gone home and watched the news after he took off from their date. “Oh, hey…” He said, sitting down on the edge of her desk and handing a white envelope.

“What’s this?” She asked, slipping the flap open and pulling out a small orange and black card.

She read the invitation and smiled.

“The paper used to do this every year, but with budget cuts and the paper transferring hands so much over the past few years… this should be interesting.” Lois said as she handed the card back to Clark.

“It sounds like it’ll be fun. So what do you say? Will you be my date to a costume party?” He asked, his smile beaming at her.

“I can’t. I have plans already.” Lois said simply.

“Plans? Wi- with who?” Clark asked, taken aback.

“A friend.” Lois said, realizing Clark was getting jealous and wanting to push him just a little further.

“A friend?” Clark repeated hesitantly.

“Yup. Huge costume party, games, prizes… I’m pretty excited.” Lois said, trying to keep her tone casual.

“Sounds good… am I… going with you?” Clark asked, not sure if Lois was deliberately toying with him or if she was genuinely avoiding telling him who she had made plans with.

“Uh… I’m not sure, Clark. I mean, the invitation was a phone call to *me* and it’s kind of a friend we both know, so if you weren’t invited… I mean… there’s probably a reason.” She said, patting his arm.

“Wait… whose party is it, Lois?” Clark said as Lois spun her chair around the face her computer.
Lois shrugged and turned to smile at Clark again.

“Sweetie, she’s just a friend of mine.” Lois said, trying to sound reassuring.

“Lo-is… come on. Your friend doesn’t like me. Is that it?” Clark asked, obviously feeling a little hurt.
Lois tried to stifle a laugh, but she couldn’t hold out any longer.

“Clark, she finds you huggy and kind of headstrong sometimes and when she looks at you… all she can see is a baby.”

Clark’s jaw dropped. “Who is this, Lois? Do I hug your friends? I’m not a baby… At least tell me who it is I make so uncomfortable!” Clark begged, feeling kind of down about the entire situation.

“Clark… she likes it when you hug her and she will *always* see you as a baby because you *are* her baby.” Lois said, deciding the game had gone on long enough.

“What?” Clark asked, more confused now than he was before.

“Your mother called me last night and said I should come to Smallville for Halloween. Something about a big costume party and a haunted house, maybe a corn maze…” Lois said, smiling at Clark.

“That must be why she called me last night.” Clark said, nodding.

“It was, she called me right after and I told her you were out and about. She didn’t say to invite you though. Looks like you’re going solo this year.” Lois said, teasingly.

“You’re adorable, you know that right?” Clark asked, narrowing his eyes at her as he leaned down for a kiss.

“So, what are you thinking costume wise?” Lois asked as she sat down on the side of Clark’s bed and lay back.

“I don’t know. I was thinking we could do a couples costume.” Clark said from in the bathroom.

“Like what though? Plug and socket?” Lois asked, laughing slightly at the suggestiveness of that particular costume.

“You’re awful.” Clark replied as he turned on the shower. “I’ll be out in a sec. I have oil caked into my hair.” Clark said as he stepped into the shower, leaving his Superman suit to soak in the sink.

Less than a minute later the water shut off and Clark came out wearing a towel.

“You could always go as ‘sexy man in a towel.” Lois said, smiling cheekily at him.

“Cute.” Clark said, raising his eyebrows at her. “Toss me those shorts beside you, will ya?” Clark asked, nodding at the item on the bed next to Lois.

“What shorts?” Lois asked as she shoved the shorts under her.

“Lo-is.” Clark said, his tone warning but his expression humoured.

“Cla-ark” Lois said, mimicking his tone.

“Gimme my shorts, Lois Lane.” Clark said, walking toward her.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She said as innocently as she could muster.

“Hmm…” Clark said, walking toward her.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Lois asked when he advanced on her with an amused smile. “Clark… what are you do—“ Lois was cut off when Clark leaned over her and smiled as he unbuttoned the fastening on her jeans.

“Clark Kent!” Lois said, shocked at his boldness, but not at all offended.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I thought we were trading.” Clark said innocently.

Lois narrowed her eyes at him as he popped her button back in place and pulled her to her feet.

“Go decide what you want for dinner.” He said, kissing her cheek before she left the room so he could get dressed.

“What about Cinderella and Prince Charming?” Clark suggested as he fed Lois a piece of chicken off of his chopsticks.

“Cinderella is a blonde!” Lois protested around the piece of meat in her mouth.

“Ok… what about Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming?”

Lois rolled her eyes.

“Blonde.” She said again.

“What about that mermaid one and … uh… Prince Charming really gets around huh?”

Lois laughed.

“Doesn’t matter. Ariel is a redhead.”

Clark sighed and shrugged.

“I know. Beauty and the Beast!” she said, reaching out and stroking Clark’s cheek.

“There’s a princess who marries a beast?” Clark asked skeptically.

“He was turned into a beast and only true love could break the spell.” Lois said, her voice dreamy.

“Let’s think of something else…” Clark said as he picked up some noodles.

“Clark, we have one day left before we go to your parents. We need to think of something!” Lois said as they headed down the ramp into the newsroom.

“Me Tarzan. You Jane.” Clark said, grunting as he took her hand.

“You dreaming.” Lois said, pointing her eyes at him. “I’m not wearing a loin cloth dress.”

Clark sighed.

“How about we go as…” Lois leaned really close to Clark and whispered, “… Superman and Ultra Woman.”

Clark gave her a look that told her he wasn’t even going to humour that suggestion with a response.

“You don’t think I looked good in those tights?” Lois asked, mock insulted.

“You looked amazing, and anytime you wanna wear that costume again is just fine with me, as long as, you know, it’s just for me.” Clark said as he pulled Lois’ chair out and smiled.

“Tinkerbell and Peter Pan!”Lois exclaimed louder than she’d intended.

“Peter Pan?” Clark asked, giving her that same look he’d given her only a few moments ago. “Tinkerbell is a blonde remember?” Clark said, hoping that would throw her off that idea.

“I’m willing to wear a wig for Tink.” Lois stated firmly.

“I… I’ll think about it.” Clark said as he turned to walk over to his desk.

“Think about all the leg I’ll be showing too.” Lois said softly as she sat down at her desk, knowing he’d hear her.

“Wow! CK, this pizza is amazing! Where’d you get it?!” Jimmy asked as he, Perry, Lois and Clark sat down for lunch in the conference room.

“Oh, it’s just this little hole in the wall place. It’s kind out of the way, but worth it once in a while.” Clark said, waving his hand in gesture to some random direction.

“So, you guys are really not coming to the costume party?” Jimmy asked, disappointed that they wouldn’t be there.

“Can’t.” Lois said simply. “I promised my future mother-in-law I’d help her this weekend at the Smallville shin-dig. I can’t back out. You know how mother-in-laws can be.” Lois said teasingly, nudging Clark with her elbow.

“Right!” Perry scoffed. “You got lucky. You want mother-in-law from hell. You should meet Alice’s mother.” He said, raising his eyebrows as he obviously had a specific event silently playing in his mind.

“Excuse me, Mr. White…” All four friends turned towards the door and to greet the voice of a meek looking research assistant.

“What’s up?” Perry asked, wiping his hands on his napkin.

“Um… we just got word from upstairs that the Halloween party is cancelled. They said something about it being offensive to some religious groups. There have been complaints.” The assistant nodded and left, closing the door behind him and leaving the group in shock.

“That’s insane.” Jimmy said. “I already had my costume picked out…” he complained, dropping his pizza slice on his plate.

“You guys could always come to Smallville.” Clark said as he reached for his drink.

“Oh my g-… Lo-is!” Clark said as he brought the glass to his lips and was shocked to see a large rubber spider floating in it.

“What?” She asked innocently. “Did you guys know, Clark is not afraid of a single thing in the entire world? I’ve been trying to prank him and there’s just nothing that gets to this man.” Lois said, crossing her arms across her chest.

“I can’t help it. I have a calm zen-like attitude toward life.” Clark said as he shrugged and fished the spider out of his drink. “I believe this is yours.” He said, placing it on the side of Lois’ plate and smiling. “I, uh… have to go pick out a Halloween costume.” Clark said scurrying to his feet and leaving.

Lois watched him leave and took advantage of the fact that his attention was tuned into whatever emergency was tearing him away so quickly.

“Ok, I need your help. You’re coming to Smallville and you’re going to help me scare the living snot out of Clark Kent.” Lois said, her eyes determined.

“There’s only one thing I know that would REALLY scare CK.” Jimmy said with a smile.

“Me too.” Perry agreed.

A slow smile crept across Lois’ face as she realized why they were both staring at her.

“You boys are geniuses.” She said, her eyes twinkling.

“I hate flying.” Clark grumbled, crossing his arms and looking out the window.

Lois chuckled at the irony in his statement but didn’t respond; she knew exactly what he meant.

“Boy, with all that travelling you did, you’d think you would be used to flying by now.” Perry said from the seat behind them.

“I guess so.” Clark said, trying not to act like a spoiled brat.

Lois smiled as she saw the stewardess walking past with a cart of books and magazines.

“Excuse me.” Lois said, stopping her. “Can I have one of those?” She asked, pointing at a prepackaged item.

“Sure.” The stewardess replied, handing it to Lois.

“Thanks.” Lois said as the other woman left.

She turned to Clark and handed him the package.

“Colour your mommy a picture.” She said in a cute voice as Clark looked down at the Superman colouring book and small package of crayons.

Clark gave Lois a menacing look as he tore open the plastic bag and pulled out the book and crayons.

“Clark!” Martha’s voice beamed from the parking lot as she waved at the group.

“I guess that’s our ride.” Jimmy said, eyeing the pick-up truck.

The group approached Martha and watched as she pulled Clark into a warm hug. When Martha finally released him, she looked at the extra guests and smiled.

“Jonathon couldn’t get his car to start. You boys’ll have to ride in the back.” Martha said, nodding at Jimmy and Clark.

Clark nodded, knowing the drill all too well.

“Just be careful when you’re tossing those bags in there, boys.” She called over her shoulder as she ushered Lois and Perry over to the cab of the truck.

“Uh, CK… why did she tell us to be careful?” Jimmy asked as he picked up a bag in each hand and followed Clark to the back of the truck.

“Bubba’s back there.” Clark said casually as he peered over the side of the truck and placed the bags in gently.

“Bubba?” Jimmy asked, peering over into the back. “Bubba.” He said again, this time as a statement.

“Climb in, he won’t bite.” Martha called through the open window of the cab.

Clark opened the tailgate and climbed up into the bed of the truck, sliding back and resting against the bags.

“Are you sure it doesn’t bite.” Jimmy asked as he pulled the tailgate closed.

“Nah!” Clark assured him as he patted his legs as if calling a dog over. “Come on, Bubba!” Clark said excitedly.

The small piglet scurried over and climbed into Clark’s lap.

“Bubba’s like a puppy.” Clark explained as he scratched behind the little creature’s ears.

Clark looked over his shoulder when he heard Lois’ voice whispering from the cab behind him.

“Martha, when you get a chance, away from your eavesdropping son, we need to talk.”

“Honey, did you bring up my other bag?” Lois asked when she heard Clark enter the room.

“Yea it’s my room.” Clark said as he looked around his mother’s sewing room slash almost completely remodeled guest bedroom. “You sure you’re okay with this whole… sharing a room thing?” He asked, hesitating slightly.

Lois smiled and walked across the room toward him.

“I’m okay with it, Clark. We’re going to be married, hopefully very soon. I’m gonna have to get used to you taking up half my bed.” She teased as she snuggled into his arms.

“Listen, Lady…” Clark said in a mock threatening tone.

Lois leaned back and raised an eyebrow at him, daring him to continue.

“That’s all I got.” He said, shrugging as she nodded in satisfaction and snuggled back into his chest.

“So what did you pick for your costume?” Lois asked as she pulled away and went back to making the bed.

“It’s a surprise.” Clark said, grinning at her.

“Surprise?” Lois asked, turning to face him.

“Yup.” He said, his smile not faltering.

“Hmm… mine too.” She said, countering his move with one of her own.

“Okay then.” He said, nodding firmly at her before leaving the room.

Lois rolled her eyes and smiled as she finished making up Perry’s bed in the guest room.

Lois stood in the doorway with an amused smirk playing on her features as she watched Clark lift something out of a bag that was obviously not his own. She cleared her throat and raised an eyebrow at him when he looked at her with an expression that clearly proved he’d just been caught doing something he knew he shouldn’t be doing.

“I, uh-- I-- I think this is yours.” He said, handing Lois the bra he had in his hand.

“I think so too.” She replied, taking the garment from him casually.

“I… uh… thought this was the bag I borrowed from you.” Clark said, stammering as he tried to explain that what she had just walked in on was definitely an accident.

“Uh huh. And when you looked inside and saw black lace you were even surer that it was your bag, right?” Lois said, her tone teasing as she entered the room.

“You don’t know what I wear under my clothes. Maybe I did think it was mine.” Clark said, crossing his arms.

“Actually…” Lois replied, taking a step closer to him and splaying her hand on his chest. “I know exactly what you wear under your clothes.”

She could feel the texture of the spandex beneath his t-shirt.

“You got me there. I’m sorry I went through your bag.” Clark whispered as he tilted his head to kiss Lois.

“No, you’re sorry you got caught.” Lois said, grinning at him.

“We can go with that.” He admitted, shrugging innocently. “I can’t help myself. We’re so close to that moment…” Clark trailed off and smiled as the image he’d been picturing reemerged into his mind.

“Did you see my costume while you were being a peeping tom?” Lois asked, pulling out of his embrace and tossing the bra onto the bed casually.

“No, I was, uh… distracted.” Clark said, smiling at how open Lois was with her lingerie toward him.

She apparently didn’t care if he’d seen it.

“Good. You won’t see it until tonight.” She said zipping closed her bag and pointing at the matching one on the floor by the dresser.

“That’s your stuff. You really need to get a new bag though. If you were travelling alone, people might wonder why you have floral luggage.” She said as she left the room.

“Come on, Lois! How long does it take to get on a costume? Are you drawing on clown make—wow.” Clark said from behind his Zorro mask.

His original statement had been cut off when he saw Lois come around the corner from the living room in her costume.

“Zorro! perfection prend du temps!” Lois said, poking Clark in the chest with the handle of her feather duster.

“A French maid who actually speaks French.” Jimmy said, nodding his approval.

Clark’s face held an amused smile as he took in Lois’ flirty costume.

“I guess all those years in Metropolis’ best private schools paid off. Your parents would be proud at how well you made use of your French lessons.” Perry teased.

Lois winked at Clark and swayed her hips as she made her way out the door ahead of all three of her gentlemen escorts.

“Oh, I forgot my axe.” Jimmy said, reaching onto the table and placing the hatchet into his belt hook.

“Dans la voiture, petits garcons!” Lois demanded, tapping her feather duster on the open door before climbing into the back seat.

“What’d she say?” Jimmy asked, shrugging at Clark as they walked around to the other side of the car.

“She called us little boys and told us to get in the car.” Clark said, amused that Lois was staying in character so well.

Clark climbed into the driver’s seat and waited for Elvis to climb into the front passenger seat in front of the axe murderer. He met Lois’ eyes through the rearview mirror and smiled as he caught a glimpse of something mischievous twinkling in her eyes.

“Let’s go in the haunted house!” Jimmy said as he stood in line.

Lois froze as Clark and Perry joined Jimmy in the line.

“Come on, honey.” Clark said, smiling at her.

“Non! Je suis effrayé!” Lois said, stomping her high-heel clad foot on the grass.

Clark shook his head and walked over to Lois.

“You’re really into this costume, huh?” He whispered as he pulled her closer.

“Oui.” She whispered.

“You don’t have to be afraid. I’ll protect you. I am Zorro after all.” Clark said, tapping his hand on the sheathed sword at his hip.

Lois batted her eyes at Clark and allowed him to usher her over to the line for the haunted house.

“You have nothing to be afraid of. I mean, we did grow up believing this house was haunted. In fact this whole property belonged to a family of very strange people until one day they all just disappeared, but I’ve been in this house when it wasn’t set up as a haunted mansion, so you really have nothing to worry about.” Clark said, impressed with himself for coming up with such a mysterious tale on his toes.

“Liar…” Lois said as she linked her arm through his.

“Go back to the French. I like it. Kind of like a Morticia and Gomez thing.” Clark whispered.

Lois smirked up at Clark as they followed Jimmy and Perry up the stairs to the front door.

“Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir?” She whispered as they handed their tickets to a masked figure standing on the top landing.

“Have fun!” Martha beamed from beneath the bloody zombie mask, startling the group.

“Thanks, Mom!” Clark said, as they entered through the thick black curtain in the doorway.

“If we get separated, we’ll just meet outside at the end.” Clark said as Lois gripped his hand.

If truth be told, she wasn’t at all frightened because she’d been out earlier to help Martha set up, but she liked letting Clark feel like her big superhero… for the time being anyways.

“Ahh!!” Lois screeched as something reached out and grabbed her arm.

A red light flashed revealing the mangled face of a zombie bride.

“I hope you don’t look like that first thing in the morning.” Clark teased as they continued walking.

“Oh mon dieu!” Lois whispered harshly, clamping onto Clark’s arm again when a pre-recorded scream echoed through well-hidden speakers in the corner of the room.

Lois followed Clark, Jimmy and Perry up the stairs toward the second floor of the house where the arrows indicated the next part of the tour was.

“Wait for me!” Lois whispered as she tried to keep up with them, her heels clicking against the old wooden steps.

Jimmy slowed down and patted Clark on the shoulder as he passed. Clark looked over his shoulder and saw Jimmy holding Lois’ hand as they strode up the stairs behind him. Lois waited for Clark to turn back around before she met Jimmy’s eyes and made a silent exchange, confirming their plan. Jimmy nodded and Lois’ face was painted with mischief as they ascended the final few steps.

“You okay, honey?” Clark asked, turning behind him when Lois had been quiet for some time now.

“Lois?” Clark asked, looking around in the dark hallway.

“Jimmy? Perry?” He called, realizing they were also missing.

Clark backtracked to the last room they were in and was startled when something jumped out at him unexpectedly. Had he been paying attention, he’d have noticed long before and not been startled at all. He made his way back out of that room, confirming that none of the screeching occupants were his friends or fiancé and headed toward the room they’d been in before that.

“Clark, where’s Lois?” Jonathon asked when he saw his son searching the room.

“I don’t know. She was just here.” Clark replied, looking around again.

Clark was suddenly grabbed from behind.

“CK! … CK, I’m so sorry! It was an accident! I swear!” Jimmy said, stammering over his words.

A loud screech echoed throughout the house and it was not coming from the sound system.

“Jimmy… where’s Lois? What happened?” Clark asked, confused by Jimmy’s previous statement.

“She’s-- she’s in the attic. CK I’m sorry! It was an accident! She scared me. I-- I panicked!” Jimmy called as Clark ran toward the attic stairs. Jimmy smiled at Jonathon once Clark was out of sight and received a nod of approval before Jonathon chased after Clark.

“Lois?” Clark called as he entered the attic.

The door creaked closed and Perry jumped out of the corner and grabbed Clark’s hand. His voice was panicked as he shouted at Clark.

“She kept telling me to take it out, son! I told her you’re supposed to leave it in, but she yanked it out herself!” He said as he pulled Clark toward Lois’ still body.

Blood was pooled all around her, seemingly from the huge stain and gash in her chest.

“What happened?!” Clark exclaimed, obviously shocked.

“The axe…” Perry said, pointing at Jimmy’s axe where it lay on the floor, its wooden handle stained with Lois’ bloody handprint.

“Jimmy did this?” Clark asked, gesturing at Lois’ body where it lay on the floor.

“CK, I-- I’m so sorry!” Jimmy said as he stood in the doorway next to Jonathon.

“You killed her!” Clark shouted, advancing on Jimmy.

“CK, I swear! It was an accident!” Jimmy said again, putting his hands up defensively as Clark stood just inches away from the younger man.

“YOU KILLED HER!” Clark shouted, grabbing Jimmy by his shirt and hoisting him up against the wall.

“Clark! It was an accident!” Perry shouted from behind him.

“I’m gonna kill you!” Clark shouted, slamming Jimmy against the wall again. “I could snap you in half, you little worm!” He shouted in Jimmy’s face.

“Clark!” Martha shouted as she entered the room. “The joke is over!” she shouted again, pulling on Clark’s arm.

“Clark! I’m fine! Look!” Lois shouted, sitting up and pushing herself to her feet.

“I don’t care! I’m gonna kill him anyway!” Clark shouted, staring into Jimmy’s fearful face.

“No! Clark! Stop!” Lois shouted as she ran toward him.

“I should kill all of you!” Clark said, dropping Jimmy to the ground and turning toward Lois.

“Clark…” Lois said softly. “Clark I swear, it-- it was just a joke. Please…” Lois begged, backing away from him slowly as he towered over her.

His eyes were eerily dark and the shadows of the dark attic didn’t help soften his normally sweet expression.

“Honey, please.” Lois said as she felt the corner behind her now.

“Are you afraid of me?” Clark asked, his voice low as he stared into Lois’ terrified eyes.

She knew his secret and what he could do, and she’d never seen him this way before.

“Please, Clark.” Lois begged as she began to tremble in the corner.

Clark’s face softened and his hand reached up and tenderly cupped Lois’ cheek.

“You can’t play dead when I can hear your heart beat.” He whispered before placing a kiss on Lois’ cheek.

“You knew all along!?” Lois asked, shoving Clark’s chest.

Clark laughed and shook his head.

“I told you you’d never get me, Lois.” he said, shrugging at her.

“Jimmy told me, by the way.” Clark said, pulling Lois into a tight hug.

“Jimmy!” Lois yelled.

“Bros before ho—uh… yea I told him.” Jimmy said, catching himself when Lois’ jaw dropped at what his statement would have been.

“Sorry, dear, but Clark told us about you playing tricks on him all week and we couldn’t resist.” Martha said, smiling at Lois from the doorway.

“All of you!?” Lois asked, shocked that her own prank had been turned against her.

Perry and Jonathon both nodded at her and she huffed at them.

“You guys are evil.” She said as she snuggled tighter into Clark’s arms.

“Have you learned not to try to pull pranks on me?” Clark asked, tilting his head and meeting her eyes.

“No; I’ve learned not to trust our friends and family to help me next time!” She said, teasingly as she glared at the group of betrayers. “You’re all just lucky I don’t make bacon out of Bubba for this!” She joked, shoving Clark a little.

“Zorro!” Lois exclaimed quietly as Clark entered the bedroom.

“Sorry, I thought you were ready for bed already.” Clark said when he saw Lois leaning back on the pillows in her French maid costume, complete with the dried blood.

“I am.” Lois said simply, crossing one leg of the other and letting her high heel dangle from her toes.

“You’re going to bed in your costume?” Clark asked as he took off his mask.

“Fermez la bouche et embrassez-moi, Zorro!” Lois demanded, pointing at Clark.

Clark smiled as he walked over to the bed and crawled across it, leaning over Lois’ body as he lowered his lips to hers. He smiled as he pulled back and looked down at Lois.

“Cualquier cosa para usted.” He whispered.

“Was that Spanish?” Lois asked, still dazed from Clark’s kiss.

Clark smiled and leaned down again, recapturing Lois’ lips and eliciting a contented sigh from her.
