Summary: When Clark leaves at the end of When Irish Eyes Are Killing, what exactly does Lois do?

***
As soon as he left, she regretted it. But she had to do it. It was the only way. What she told him was the truth: no one had the right to live her life except for her. How many times had she counted on Clark or Superman to save her? How many times did she want Clark beside her when something exciting happened? But now, she couldn’t.

It had taken her years to find someone like Clark. To trust someone, to feel worthy of someone’s love, and now she had found it. Now she knew what it meant to lose it.

Lois had turned on the stereo and heard a song, an older song. One that haunted her now. It was the strong vocals of Ann Wilson from Heart. The song was Alone, and the lyrics expressed exactly how Lois was feeling at the moment.

Lois Lane had never really cared until Clark Kent had come into her life. And as time had passed, he’d been there for her as a partner, a friend, and someone to love. When they’d finally crossed that line and became more than partners, she’d been shocked at how easy it’d been. Not so easy in the moment, maybe, but the feelings—those had been easier to let happen, even if, at times, she’d wondered about his secrets.

Now, as Lois sat on the couch, holding a pillow, hearing the guitar solo in the song, she cried for the reason she was alone. Was he out saving someone? The ticking of the clock, somehow breaking through the sound of the song on the stereo, and the pitch dark of the room only exacerbated her loneliness.

“NO!” Lois shouted, standing up and tossing the pillow to the side. She went to the window and looked out. The cold chilled her to her bones, and she wrapped her arms around herself.

Lois had her reasons for pushing him away. She’d lived through one heartbreak from him. She couldn’t live through another. And being alone with Clark was one thing she couldn’t do ever again. She had never needed a man to validate her before; why did she need it now?

No, she could do this. She could move on alone. She had to.

Closing her window, she turned around and picked up the pillow. Then she tossed it back on the couch, wiped her eyes, and held her head high, and she walked alone, one foot in front of the other, down the hallway to her bedroom.

The End
