And another (there might be more lifelines later on, I have ideas for at least two more, if I have enough inspiration to fill them with life)

Teaser for Act 1: The Beginning

(September 30th 1961)

The chapel was quiet, tucked behind the hospital, with whitewashed walls and creaky floors that held the scent of old wood and lilies. It wasn’t much, but Ellen thought it was beautiful. Sunlight slanted through the high windows, catching the dust in the air and making it shimmer like a blessing.

Sam stood nervously at the front, tugging at the cuffs of the borrowed suit that didn’t quite fit across his shoulders. His parents sat in the first pew: his mother with her purse clutched in white-gloved hands, lips pressed into a thin line, his father still in his overcoat despite the warmth of the day. Neither smiled. Neither looked at the chapel walls or the light or their son. They watched the aisle like they were waiting for someone else to come down it.

Ellen entered alone.

No one gave her away. There was no veil, no organ music. Just the sound of her heels on the chapel floor and the scent of the bouquet she’d made that morning from wildflowers picked near her boarding house. Her dress was simple, pressed carefully that morning in the hospital laundry room. She’d done her hair by feel, with the small compact mirror she kept in her bag.

She could feel the weight of their eyes - his mother’s especially - measuring her with something colder than disapproval. Pity, maybe. Or disappointment.

She was almost thirty, and no stranger to silence that stung.

But Sam’s face lit up when he saw her, the worry in his brow softening into something warm and steady. He looked at her like she was the answer to a question he hadn't known he was asking.

“You’re breathtaking,” he whispered, taking her hands.

“You’re overdressed,” she teased, her voice low and calm, as always. “I thought you said you didn’t own a tux.”

“I borrowed it from a friend,” he said. “Wanted to look the part.”

“You look like yourself,” she said. “That’s enough for me.”

The ceremony was short. The pastor, one of the hospital chaplains, had seen them in the corridors, had watched them fall in love between shifts and cafeteria coffee. He smiled as he spoke. They promised things they didn’t fully understand: for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health.

Neither of them looked toward Sam’s parents during the vows.

Sam squeezed her hands when he said “I do,” and for a moment, Ellen let herself forget the silence at the front pew, the coldness in his mother’s expression, the way his father hadn’t even taken off his coat. Let herself believe, just for this breath, that love was enough.

When it was done, she kissed Sam like he was the only thing holding her together. And maybe, in that moment, he was.

Outside, they stepped into the sun like a pair of fugitives escaping into something better. No rice. No clapping. No photos. Just Sam’s arm around her waist and the echo of his mother’s voice in her mind, brittle and distant:

“She must be very capable… at the hospital, I mean. Samuel. But she’s older. And from no real family. Are you sure this is wise?”

Ellen never asked what he’d said in response. She never needed to.

He had married her anyway.

That was not the girl I expected (of course)! I had never really thought about their beginning before.

Aww I feel for Ellen, Sam was sweet here. To bad things got so awful for them throughout their time together (but they seem on good terms by the end of the series so yay 🙌)

I didn't clock is at first, but this is such a fun response to the location challenge because you're hitting all three important locations at once!

I love this description. I feel like 'old wood and lilies' tells me everything.

No one gave her away.

Nice job capturing the generational trauma that looks like Ellen hands down to Lois, after it was handed down to her.

Oh, man, I felt that like a physical punch to the gut!

“Wanted to look the part.”

Awwwwww!

“You look like yourself,” she said. “That’s enough for me.”

I love this in particular because it somehow reminds me of Lois' 'whatever he can do, that's enough' line.

'Young and in love' has never looked more crushing.

I loved the whole tone of this. It was written with such hold and simplicity and feels like such devastation the whole time. Adding in the parents as an ominous harbinger of their ultimate ending is a great device.

Looking forward to this summer's Location Challenge! Looks like stories are due around August 1st, and then polls open for voting!

And don't forget about the 2026 fundraiser! Head over to the Fundraising page to donate or consider adding a story to the Keepsake Collection fundraising drive!

Fascinating to see Sam and Ellen's beginning! With disapproval from their families - surely that must have been one of the reasons their marriage didn't go so well 💔 but it's lovely to see them in love!
