Chapter 8 lives here.
And here's the TOC.

Thanks to everyone who's been reading along! This marks the halfway point in the story, and honestly, I feel like it's just heating up.
Things get much more dramatic in the next couple of chapters!

And in the research section: there are trace amounts of lead in quick-dry cement. Let's just assume that in this particular batch in Egypt in 1994, that proportion is just skewed to even a little bit more.

Enormous thanks to 90stvfangirl who kindly agreed to beta this story and gratitude to pacem for a thorough second look! clap

As always, I look forward to any thoughts or comments, favorite things or least favorite things! notworthy
Thanks for reading!

She’d been seven, and already precocious and self-sufficient for her age.

“Around eight or nine.”

“Eight?!”

It's interesting to notice the small changes here. Lois knows she was seven, but when telling Clark, she makes herself a little older (maybe so she doesn't seem like she's asking for pity?). Clark, when given the choice between eight and nine, chooses the younger age. It's sad to think of a child taking care of another child like that, and it probably did happen in canon frown

"You’ll never find a more eager set of teachers,” he said with a widening grin.

In response, she scrunched up her nose in distaste. “Ugh, academics! Don’t even put that idea into their heads.”

I'm pretty sure I've said something very similar myself at some point in my life... laugh

You take Jimmy out for coffee and listen to all f his latest girlfriend problems.

How sweet. I wish we'd seen more moments like that in TNAoS.

“My intuition was telling me to pursue Lex, so I did. I just didn’t realize it was telling me to investigate him instead of telling me to marry him.”

Oooh, I'd never thought about it that way. It makes so much sense.

she went to pick out another rock to torture herself with.

I like this quote.
Quote
“The bird!” Gamal replied, his voice loud, as if near hysteria. “The black bird means death.”

Wow! I know I said magic was the last possibility I would consider as the reason behind all of this, but that doesn't mean I won't like it if it actually is magic! lol

I really enjoyed this chapter. It brings some deep dialogue and a chilling final scene.

This is getting interesting. I wonder who the fake mummy is. Does Clark already know? He would be able to see who's underneath the costume,v wouldn't he?

“Let’s head back up to the group. Maybe our showing up can at least prove to the men that the mummy didn’t lure us in and turn us to stone.”

“And maybe we can talk Dr. Weeks into extending those flood lights down here,” she said despondently.

She let him lead her back to chamber three and the light of the flood lamps.

He didn’t seem to notice that they held hands all the way there.

Yup, the mummy didn't turn them to stone, so he can't be real...right?

Holding hands? HeeHee! clap

A writer's job is to think of new plots and create characters who stay with you long after the final page has been read. If that mission is accomplished than we have done what we set out to do, which is to entertain and hopefully educate.

Still fascinated by the mystery! Thank goodness the statue was not a cemented Wahid 😅 but it's still curious! He must have something to do with this...

It's so cute to imagine Clark as a kid, hauling stuff around and having an Egypt phase! grin

I really like the connection between Lois's family life and her attitude towards marrying Lex! And the contrast with Clark and his own hopes and expectations ❤ so well done!!

They really need to get into the habit of carrying flashlights 😅 Let's see what they find next!!

I'm...pretty sure he did indeed notice she held his hand all the way back out. Hehe.

Yep, exactly. She grew up and learned that this wasn't normal behavior so she skews it upward a little so push attention away from it; Clark knows her better than she even realizes (and can hear a lie), so gets much closer to the real number than she realizes.

Same! I get that Lois was busy and professional, and that when Clark hit the scene, Lois really focused on him, but Jimmy and Lois are buds! I love to see it!

Thank you! I was really thrilled when my brain went down this rabbit hole.

I have to admit that there was a draft with a trained crow that showed up again later. It was... awesome. I was toying with naming the bird something like Lucky. I loved him. But it was just... too much. Kill your darlings, right? Pour one out for Lucky. lol

Thank you so much for the kind words!

Bakasi, I think it's possible that Clark could look or not look. I think he's probably more invested in getting to Lois before something happens to her, and with 2 witnesses, he's got to move at 'normal' speed. Plus, I notice in the show he tends to do one thing at a time (run then look then talk, etc.). Also, those bandages are dusty, which means covered in at least some minimal amount of lead, and once he thinks to look, I'm not positive how much static he'd be able to see through. The show seems to have him look when it's convenient, and not look when it's not; particularly because this is still a young Superman, I chose to suspend the disbelief here. So I don't think he knows yet, though he's probably got a couple of solid guesses and he's probably not far off.

Morgana, I meeeeannn... he is technically real... wink Thanks so much for commenting!

Anna, I'm so glad that the mystery is mysterying for you! I was so worried that this was going to be an easy, totally obvious ploy. The red herrings are everywhere, lol.
And thanks for commenting on the connection to why Lois agrees to marry Lex. I hate the weird trance she's in during the show. I was excited when my brain started tossing this around because of course Lois wouldn't think that this decision is permanent.

Verity, I'm pretty sure HE DID! lol
