His arm mirrored hers, and the backs of their hands were touching lightly.
A beautiful image. It looks like a painting of two star-crossed lovers.
Clark’s expression turned guilty, but it was laced with something sad.
“Lois, if you’re that uncomfortable with me there, we can go back to the hotel, or I can sleep somewhere else—"
I think Clark must regret confessing his feelings in the park. I imagine he thinks Lois knows he was being sincere when he told her he loved her, and that's why she's uncomfortable around him.
And that was hardly the behavior of someone who wanted to kiss her. She must have misread the moment in the tent last night. His low tones must have been one of concern, not…anything else. With something perilously close to disappointment, she decided that it had probably been one-sided—which would be totally humiliating if he’d read her intent. Thank goodness she’d cut off whatever he’d wanted to talk about last night!
I'm really enjoying this misunderstanding on Lois's part, and the fact that she's acknowledging the "little crush" she's developing on Clark. I wonder how Clark is interpreting the fact that she avoided talking to him about the almost-kiss. Is he, like her, completely misunderstanding everything? Did he read her intentions correctly, after all?
The face was Wahid’s.
And it was stone.

This reminded me of this quote from chapter 5:
What’s all the cement for anyway?” she groused. “I thought you guys were trying to dig this place up, not bury it!”
I wonder if they used the cement for something else?
Any guesses on whether this is a magic story? A revelation story? An 'I love you' story?
Realistically speaking, no. Magic is always the last possibility I consider. I don't feel like this is a story that needs to lead to a revelation either. But I could be completely wrong about both of my non-answers. And I don't have any guesses about who the villain is either. At the same time I don't suspect anyone, I suspect everyone. It could be a group effort, maybe. Actually, I'm not even sure there is a villain at all...
