Story
This was something of an challenge for me. I don't normally write in first person and almost never in present tense except for journaling. Then I ended up switching back and forth between tenses and persons just to make it trickier. Thank goodness for Idon'tknowwhatthatmeans5678 who caught my mistakes and helped me really clean up the story. Please let me know what you think.

oh I do love me some forced proximity for injury care šŸ˜‡

I like how you managed to imbue the situation with these little subliminal tells, because there wasn't really much he could do/say to convince her in an objective way... and yet. And yet. smile

will we see more of them? My mind is running with where else they can meet, how much she remembers of the magical hospital trip...

Laura,

Thanks for the feedback. I am considering a sequel which would pick up at the pilot--will Lois recognize him when he shows up at the Planet? But I don't know when I'll get to it.

His use of the word ā€˜whom’ gives me pause. What sort of gunrunner thug makes a point of being grammatically correct?

You'd be surprised, Lois...
Quote
Is there a Mrs. Charlie back home? I shake my head to clear the wandering thought. What is wrong with me? I’m alone in the jungle with a bullet wound and a little chance of ever getting home, but all I can think about is how good looking a complete stranger is? I’ve clearly lost too much blood.

Completely understandable. I mean, if I'm bleeding to death, I'd rather have those kinds of pleasant thoughs before I kick the bucket ^^

I feel like the person in that Bible story—the one about the guy who got mugged whose own neighbors wouldn’t help him, but the foreigner did and even came back to check on him.

Great observation. That Bible reference fits well with what Superman represents. He's an alien, even so, he's a better person than many humans.

He looks down at me. His eyebrows pinch together and he sighs. For some reason he looks very sad before he focuses his gaze, once again, on the city lights.

Oh no, now he's going to run away from her. But I hope (and believe) that he'll decide to show up at the Daily Planet before too long... smile

It was a very interesting first meeting. I would love to see Lois barging into Perry's office during Clark's interview and both of them having the shock of their lives. shock

Delightful. IIRC the Congo trip took place two or three years prior to the start of the series. So you have lots of time to play.

It has been a long time since reading anything about Lois in the Congo. Excellent story.

My only complaint: Three days later she's back in the states? Recovery from infections, especially GSWs take time. At least a week in Lois' case.

Oh my! That last paragraph shouts Sequel! dance

Thank you everyone for the feedback. Yes, I do have a sequel in mind but I don't know when I'm going to start it.

Morgana,
You're probably right. My only argument is - this is Lois. I can't see her waiting around in the Congo once she was properly stitched up and on antibiotics. Also, the folks at the hospital probably didn't want to deal with the "crazy American lady" any longer than they absolutely had to.

Yeah, laying around any hospital is not the lady's style! smile

Whenever the follow-up story appears no doubt all of us will be thrilled to read it. party

Hi Amanda!

Injured and on the run in the Congo, Lois finds help from an unexpected source.

Hmm… it’s not the Alt-U, unless Clark leaves her again? So, a different alt beginning?

Quote
Despite all appearances, this is not an alt-Clark universe story. Rather, it is an alternate beginning

Warning for character injury and wound description.

Contact fic, Lois: and then, then he
ripped out my heart and showed it to me, all bloody and desperately pumping before he stomped on it!
(figurative injury description) What? No, I’m not being literal here. I’m a reporter, I write for a living. I know the difference between literally and figuratively. Where was I? Oh yes, and then he literally flew out the window and left me alone.

Umm… I guess I got sidetracked…

Quote
Don’t stop. Keep going. If I stop, they’ll find me.

Eeeep! Poor Lois!

Quote
How much is blood? Did the bullet go clean through or is it still in there?

Eeeep! Eeeeeeeep!

Quote
What was I thinking? How could I have been so stupid? To think that I, Lois Lane, Junior Reporter at the Daily Planet, have what it takes to take down gunrunners on my own.

It’s called hubris. Possibly mixed with anger and resentment in case Claude just tried to make off with her research notes.

LOIS: Stupid French Claude. Should have let him take the notes. Then he’d be here, deciding whether he wants to get shot or fed to crocodiles.

Quote
I should have passed the story to a more seasoned reporter—to Claude maybe.

Quote
convinced Perry to send me to the Congo on some story about the destruction of the rainforest—not my usual kind of story and I’m not sure he bought it completely. He sent me anyway.

PERRY: Most reporters argue for doing a piece on the impending destruction of the Bahamas reefs, but who am I to judge.

Quote
The gangs were easy enough to find and follow. From Brazzaville, I tracked them to a warehouse hidden in the jungle. After dark, I broke in.

/Eyes orange ā€˜danger’ light with fascination as it strobes on and off/

Quote
Who could ever believe that Metropolis’ greatest philanthropist is secretly running guns out of the Congo?

CANON LOIS: Oh shush it, will you? At least I’m still alive and dating Superman.

Quote
I can’t hear the men behind me anymore. Maybe they’ve given up. Maybe they know I’m going the wrong way and will never make it out alive.

Maybe they know she’s now entering the realm of Grodd and his band of man-eating gorillas.

LOIS: I already mentioned the not-alive part. No need to get so specific. Let’s keep a bit of mystery going so I can keep my relationship with Death fresh.

Quote
Fat chance of that happening. Like I’m just going to stumble upon a nicely furnished house out here in the middle of nowhere. I’ll be lucky to find a cave or a big hollow tree.

[…]

A house.

Oh, the gangs weren’t afraid of gorillas, they were afraid of the vengeance demon living in that part of the forest.

Quote
I can’t trust anyone.

What about the vengeance demon who will take her unconscious body into his hut and care for her?

LOIS: How did he bandage my wound without removing my shirt?

Quote
Okay, so it’s more of a cot, but it’s still a bed. The door shuts behind me as I limp towards the bed. I’ll just lie down for a minute, then I’ll check my wound. Surely there is something I can use to bandage it. This pillow is so soft. Some antiseptic would be nice, an infection would be bad. I’m so cold.

I just need to rest a little longer.

Aww… it’s a Goldilocks situation clap

Quote
A little time at home with his folks would do him a lot of good.

Or a detour to Metropolis to deliver a reporter to her place of work. Her editor might even offer him a job, if he manages to return a clean and relatively undamaged model.

Quote
It wasn’t worth the risk to his secret when he could probably find another way to help her.

LOIS: Bet if I had invested in some peroxide, things would look different now.

Quote
Sitting down, so as to appear less threatening, he carefully reached out to shake her shoulder.

I wonder if he has a full beard.

Quote
Squinting, I make out the shape of a man framed by log walls and a thatched roof.

Where am I?

Wouldn’t it be awkward if she claimed he’d kidnapped her?

Quote
My side throbs as I recall the gunshot, the forest, the hut, and then… nothing.

But there is someone here now—a stranger. Friend or foe? In a place like this, most likely the latter.

What if he’s Death, come to meet her at the appointed hour?

Quote
ā€œDon’t touch me!ā€ The words slip out before I’ve realized I’m going to say them. Panic grips my chest. ā€œLeave me alone! Who are you?ā€

To be fair, she was the one who entered an occupied hut and laid down in a stranger’s bed.

Quote
ā€œYou tracked me here,ā€ I point out. ā€œYou’re with them.ā€

/points at earlier remark/ Awkward!

Quote
ā€œWith whom?ā€

His use of the word ā€˜whom’ gives me pause. What sort of gunrunner thug makes a point of being grammatically correct?

rotflol Next, he uses ā€˜I’ and ā€˜me’ correctly.

Quote
But they could have easily sent in their nicest looking, most well-spoken thug to set me at ease, to try to find out what I know.

They call him ā€˜carrot’.

Quote
Or I could trust this guy enough to at least tend my wound. If he was going to kill me, he probably would have done so already. He wouldn’t have woken me. It would have been easy to kill me in my sleep.

What if he plans on letting her heal so they can interrogate her more easily and then turn a profit by selling her in the town market? Foreigners are renowned for their housekeeping and cooking skills and always turn a tidy profit. peep

Quote
just looking for a place to call my own.ā€

ā€œIn the Congo?ā€

Interesting wildlife. Lots of sun. Little press coverage. And many opportunities to rescue unsuspecting brunette reporter cubs.

Quote
ā€œOkay. Well, at least let me introduce myself. I’mā€”ā€

ā€œNo! It goes both ways. If they catch me, they’ll want to know who helped me. No names. No personal information.ā€

Although, it would be awkward if the gun runners went after Kal-El’s friends and family. I mean, attacking the colony of New Kryptonians two rivers east would probably solve that problem.

Quote
ā€œCharlie, right.ā€ Is there a Mrs. Charlie back home?

Whoa, she does feel better!

Quote
What is wrong with me? I’m alone in the jungle with a bullet wound and a little chance of ever getting home, but all I can think about is how good looking a complete stranger is? I’ve clearly lost too much blood.

Yes, her blood certainly isn’t feeding her brain.

Quote
It’s dry and not as sweet as the things which pass for nutrition bars in the States—more like hardtack really—but it’s probably better for me than any of that junk.

Root leaf. He baked himself. Eat. Eat.

Quote
ā€œSo how did you get hurt?ā€ Charlie asks casually.

Lead poisoning.

Quote
ā€Are you a doctor?ā€

He raises one eyebrow. ā€œI thought you said no personal information.ā€

Cute clap

Quote
This is the part I’m afraid of. Lying down, I’ll have no way to defend myself.

Yes, but sitting up she’d defend herself for one kick and then faint anyway.

Quote
Then again, trusting my gut is how I ended up here in the first place.

She’s still alive. Had she stayed in Metropolis, she could be dead by now from a cab accident.

Quote
She seemed as jumpy as a rabbit and had clearly been through something awful, but her eyes spoke of the fierceness of a tiger.

So, ā€˜kitten’?

Quote
ā€œI’m sorry,ā€ Clark offered, although the words felt lame on his tongue. He wished he didn’t have to cause her any more pain,

So much for his career option as an enhanced interrogation specialist in the gun runner gang.

Quote
It was a deep gash, about four inches long. At its deepest point, he could see both fat and muscle, although it didn’t seem to have reached any organs.

Oh boy. But at least she’s still airtight. Could have been much worse!

LOIS: Fat? What does the author mean by saying ā€˜that he can see fat’?

Quote
ā€œWhat did this?ā€ He voiced his thought out loud.

It’s not a claw of an animal. There would be more cuts. It’s wider than a slash with a knife. Probably cleaner than had she gotten caught on a jagged rock or a tree branch. High energy beam weapons usually cauterize the wound.

Quote
ā€œI need to clean this out. I’ll have to flush it with saline. It’ll probably sting. I don’t want to cause you any more pain butā€¦ā€

On the plus side, if she blacks out from the pain, he can fly her to Brazzaville.

Quote
You’re a much better patient. Prettier too.ā€

At least still prettier than male cattle. What a compliment.

Quote
ā€œWell, I should hope I’m prettier than a cow.ā€

/points up/

Quote
ā€œSteer,ā€ he corrected absently. At her confused look he added, ā€œCows are female.ā€

Quote
Good people like this don’t really exist, do they?

Go on! /stokes little ember of paranoia/ peep

Quote
ā€œInvestigating? So, you’re a cop or something?ā€

Or something. Back home, she often wears colorful costumes reminiscent of fowl.

Quote
ā€œWere you able to find anything?ā€

Quote
ā€œWhat about you?ā€ I ask, suddenly eager to learn more about this mysterious angel in the Congo.

Awwww, title reference!

Quote
ā€œEven those with more power than an average man can’t do much to change things here. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother.ā€

Because he hears. And listens. And he can pick up a nice hobby that way.

Quote
So why do I feel the sudden urge to kiss him?

Blood loss. Something related to Stockholm Syndrome. Hormones.

Quote
Hope. Could it really be that simple?

Awwww, she brought A New Hope with her clap

Quote
The U.S. Embassy would help her the rest of the way.

Unless it’s been infiltrated by Lex Luthor’s agents of chaos?

Quote
Then she would go home, and he would go wherever he felt like going next.

Weeeeell, he could feel like going to Metropolis.

Quote
Then she started tossing lightly and whimpering. At first Clark thought maybe she was dreaming, but her heart rate was too fast. She was in pain.

Eeeep? Wound fever?

Quote
With a sharp nod, Clark made up his mind. He would fly her to Brazzaville, it would take him less than a minute. It was worth the risk; if she woke up and saw him…

She’d think she’s delirious.

Quote
Something’s changed. Someone is holding me—someone strong and warm. I lean into the warmth.

Nicely done section, the whole fever/travel repeated from her experience.

Quote
He looks down at me. His eyebrows pinch together and he sighs.

laugh

Quote
For some reason he looks very sad before he focuses his gaze, once again, on the city lights.

Poor guy!

Quote
No one could tell me how I’d gotten to the hospital—only that a man brought me in then left.

Maybe one of the gun runners. What if she sees him again in Metropolis?

Quote

You do realize you’ve just started another series? Perhaps a trilogy?

Very nicely done. Very evocative! You also got a talent for first aid description clap

Hi Michael. Thanks for reading. Yes, I do realize I've started more than I'm actually ready to take on. Definitely writing a sequel in the future. Maaaaybe a trilogy depending on how it shakes out. But I really have to finish other stuff first.

Hi!

Quote
Angel in the Congo

From the title, I'm already hooked. I love love love the Congo/gun-runners stories! And I love that you went there for the location challenge because it's such a logical choice.

Quote
If they find me, I’m dead.

OMG, instant high stakes!

Quote
The gangs were easy enough to find and follow.

I actually really love this because it shows what a great reporter she is; like, no one else is traipsing after these guys into the Jungle!

Quote
I have no proof. They caught me, searched me.

Oh, no! This is such a rough outcome for her!

Quote
Besides, there was something to be said about riding along a deserted dirt road, surrounded by dense forest, nothing but the wind and the rain and the sound of the engine. It had a way of helping him decompress—although a flight through the clouds would probably be better.

I love this detail. I feel like I can feel this.

Quote
But old motorcycles were similar enough to tractors that he could figure out how to fix it.

Totally makes sense - love this!

Quote
His stay in Africa had been eye-opening...They need systemic change, which would take a long time.

Its fantastic to read this perspective here. This would totally be hard for Clark to live with; ironically it's more of a Lois problem to tackle in her articles.

Quote
He froze. He could hear a heartbeat inside the cabin.

Love that he's using his powers more when alone!

Quote
Sitting down, so as to appear less threatening,

Aw, I love this. That's so thoughtful.

Quote
Where am I?
What was I doing?
The gunrunners!
I’m in the Congo. They caught me. I ran.

The sentence structure in this whole section is really effective.

Quote
His use of the word ā€˜whom’ gives me pause.

Nice!

Quote
It would have been easy to kill me in my sleep.

That's sound logic for a sane person and also just a little naive (which I like because I feel like it reinforces that this is a slightly younger Lois than we meet on the show).

Quote
There is an almost boyish innocence about him—something which says, you get what you see.

The dramatic irony of this!

Quote
"No names. No personal information.ā€

Oh nooooooo. I feel like this isn't going to go well for them long-term.

Quote
ā€œNice to meet you, Lola. You can call me… um… Charlie.ā€

Such classics. I love these!

Quote
ā€œAre you a doctor?ā€
He raises one eyebrow. ā€œI thought you said no personal information.ā€
Caught by my own rules, I can only shrug.

lol That got me!

Quote
She was already vulnerable, and he was asking her to give up even more control.

Its really great how empathetic you made him, but also how understanding of another person's viewpoint he is, both in relating to Lois, but also the way he thinks about the people that live here.

Quote
She nodded again silently but her entire body tensed in anticipation of pain.

Ugh, so real.

Quote
ā€œAre you sure you’re not a doctor?ā€
Lola’s voice startled him out of his pondering. He shook his head. ā€œI’m not. Why?ā€

So much for no personal info, lol.

Quote
I grew up on a farm.

I really love how absolutely bad they are at keeping personal details out of it.

Quote
With his quiet promise, I feel quite certain, too, that I will see Metropolis again soon.

Awwwww.

Quote
He sits back in his chair and stares at the ceiling as though he could see right through it to find answers to his problems in the stars.

That's phrased in such a lovely way!

Quote
Whatever you can do… it’s enough.

That's really sweet, to get this in here. I love that in this universe, he gets to hear it from Lois directly.

Quote
Well, he’d have to kiss me actually; I can’t really move much right now.

rotflol

Quote
Hope. Could it really be that simple?

I love this trajectory of his thought process; we know that these two are soulmates, but as a broader context, this is just lovely to see the idea that one stranger can, in just a few minutes, reshape another person's life for the better.

Quote
He didn’t understand it—this whatever-it-was that he was feeling. It was something like the feeling he got when he was flying

That's so swoon-worthy!

Quote
He didn’t know if he believed in love at first sight but current events were certainly weighing in its favor.

lol

Quote
He pulled his hand back in surprise as he felt the heat radiating off her body.

Oh, nooooo, that's going to make some decisions for them.

Quote
He would fly her to Brazzaville, it would take him less than a minute. It was worth the risk; if she woke up and saw him…
She’d never see him again.

Nooooooooooooooooo.

Quote
Pushing through the pain, I pry open my eyes.

Lois, noooooooo!

Quote
He looks down at me. His eyebrows pinch together and he sighs. For some reason he looks very sad before he focuses his gaze, once again, on the city lights.

I think this is partly so effective because she doesn't know what's at stake, and neither of them really know what they're losing either. Really great job with this set-up.

Quote
Three days later, I’m stepping off the plane onto American soil, convinced that it was all a dream.

Crushing whiplash! (But in, like, a good way; this is a complimentary note, lol.)

Quote
Lex Luthor isn’t going to know what hit him.

Get him, Lois!

I really liked the POV switches in this story! I have to admit that all the way through the end section, even as soon as you set it up with the 'no names' device, I really thought that Clark would give in. That's all so heartbreaking! I'm so invested in whether this is really the end, or if 'Charlie' shows up at the Planet in a couple of years--with Lex Luthor already defeated, Lois fighting for him with Perry and a whole different unfolding of the universe.

Looking forward to this summer's Location Challenge! Looks like stories are due around August 1st, and then polls open for voting!

Ooooh, Luthor is behind this!! Of course!!

My poor Lois, wounded and so weak 😄 good thing she found the house!

The mental image of Clark on a motorbike is very intriguing grin

Oof, Clark's POV and his worry about helping out Lois without giving out his secret smirk It's such an uncomfortable feeling!

Quote
I feel like the person in that Bible story—the one about the guy who got mugged whose own neighbors wouldn’t help him, but the foreigner did and even came back to check on him.

Oooh I like this parallel! Clark is definitely a good Samaritan!

His thoughts about hope were so poignant, I almost teared up!

He took her flying after all!!

I love the idea that she left thinking he wasn't real - that he was an angel, perhaps! It's so fitting and so well executed!

Wonderful story, I enjoyed reading it so much! Thank you for sharing!! ā¤ā¤ā¤
