Rain poured down from the heavens, drenching the couple below. Clark looked up in desperation. "Give me a break, will you?!" He lowered his gaze back to Lois. "If the ground opened up at my feet, I wouldn't move until I said this." He pulled out the small, velvet box with the ring, eliciting a gasp from her. "Lois Lane, will you marry me?"
Lois drew in a breath, then reached for his glasses. "Who's asking? Clark?" She tugged the glasses off, exposing his face. "...Or Spiderman?"
Clark blinked. "Wait. What?"
Lois frowned a little, as though she also were confused. "I mean... it's right, isn't it?"
He shook his head. "Um, Lois? I'm not Spiderman."
"You're not?" She sounded genuinely surprised. "Are you sure?"
"Um...I think I would know?"
Lois scratched her head. "But you've never been seen together..."
"That's because Spiderman is a fictional character, Lois."
The frown deepened. "So you're definitely not Spiderman?"
"Definitely not," Clark agreed.
She studied him closely. "Batman?"
"Also no, but this wouldn't be the first time someone thought so; don't ask me why."
"Captain America."
Clark nodded. "You've got me, Lois. I am definitely Captain America."
Her eyes lit up. "Really?"
"No."
She rubbed her forehead, irritation showing. "You know, I'm sure I had it. It's not coming to me, but you're definitely somebody."
"Well, yeah." He pointed to himself. "I'm Clark."
"Yeah, but..." She waved a hand. "You're also someone else. Someone important." The hurt must have shown on your face, since she quickly added, "I mean you are important, but you're also someone famous. Secretly, I mean."
Clark took a deep breath and let it out. "All right, you've got me. Lois, I'm also Superman."
She studied him carefully. "No you're not."
"What?!" Clark's eyebrows rose. "I...Lois, I am. I'm Superman!" He unbuttoned his shirt, revealing the S underneath. "See?"
Lois shook her head. "No, that can't be it. You're definitely not Superman."
"But I am!" he protested.
"Stop kidding around, Clark. Now, let me think." She looked him over again. "I think I've got it: Elvis?"
Clark sighed. This was going to be a much longer day than he'd hoped.

That’s funny! Poor Clark! It’s definitely going to be a long day. Maybe Lois is pranking him with an April Fool’s joke.

Clark, this is going to take a little more work than taking off the glasses!

A writer's job is to think of new plots and create characters who stay with you long after the final page has been read. If that mission is accomplished than we have done what we set out to do, which is to entertain and hopefully educate.

Hi Mary! Given the date, I’m reading this with the expectation that you will pull a reverse April’s Fool’s day prank and publish a serious story. Rain poured down from the heavens, drenching the couple below. Clark looked up in desperation. “Give me a break, will you?!”
Aaah, a marriage proposal. And Lois gets zapped into amnesia. "Who's asking? Clark?" She tugged the glasses off, exposing his face. "...Or Spiderman?"
Lois frowned a little, as though she also were confused. “I mean… it’s right, isn’t it?”
He shook his head. “Um, Lois? I’m not Spiderman.”
You’re confusing me about the date. Is it April 1st or is Clark living somewhere with Aunt May? Lois scratched her head. “But you’ve never been seen together…”
Neither was he seen together with Batman. There are, however, pictures of Superman and Wonder Woman re-printed in Love Fortress International. Some people claim that they’re fake because Wonder Woman is much more… developed than in the photos. ”That’s because Spiderman is a fictional character, Lois.”
 She studied him closely. “Batman?”
“Also no, but this wouldn’t be the first time someone thought so; don’t ask me why.”
/Points at earlier remark as well as stories by author of this ficlet/ Clark nodded. “You’ve got me, Lois. I am definitely Captain America.”
Her eyes lit up. “Really?”
“No.”
Since Season Five just started: Homelander? ”I mean you are important, but you’re also someone famous. Secretly, I mean.”
I was going to suggest Deter earlier. But to be more precise… Who got the whammy-jammy from Bad Brains from the evidence storage? Also, he could be Satoshi Nakamoto. JIMMY: No, he couldn’t. I mean, yeah, sure. ”What?!” Clark’s eyebrows rose. “I…Lois, I am. I’m Superman!” He unbuttoned his shirt, revealing the S underneath. “See?”
Lois shook her head. “No, that can’t be it. You’re definitely not Superman.”
This could be something done by Mxyzptlk. Mxyzptlk. Mxyzptlk. Clark sighed. This was going to be a much longer day than he’d hoped.
At least she’s not mad. Just crazy. Happy belated April’s Fool’s Day! Michael

I nearly missed this story in the pre-Kerth scramble and influx of FDK, but I'm so glad I didn't! Clark blinked. "Wait. What?"
 "Um...I think I would know?"
I audibly guffawed at this. Clark nodded. "You've got me, Lois. I am definitely Captain America." Her eyes lit up. "Really?" "No."
This whole sequence actually really got me, too. "I think I've got it: Elvis?"
This was somehow inevitable and also diabolical and such a perfect addition. LOVED the subversion of expectations here - seemingly so simple, but hilarious in your hands!
Looking forward to this summer's Location Challenge! Looks like stories are due around August 1st, and then polls open for voting! And don't forget about the 2026 fundraiser! Head over to the Fundraising page to donate or consider adding a story to the Keepsake Collection fundraising drive!
