Main story is here: https://www.lcficmbs.com/ubb/ubbthr...choose-your-own-adventure-fic#Post302331Any comments or questions can go here. Hope y'all enjoy! ---------- Author's Notes: A long time ago, I wanted to do an interactive fiction based on Lois and Clark going to a costume party, and Lois (the player) having to get the costumes. It was originally going to be a Text Adventure. If you're not sure what those are: You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike. Exits are North, South, and Dennis.
>Go North
You see a hungry bear
>Talk to bear about quantum physics
You have now been eaten by a bear.
**GAME OVER** They tend to feature puzzles. My original goal was to have the final costume based on the player's level of success, with a different ending for each costume achieved. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out how to turn shopping into a puzzle (not that it's never been done, examples exist, just that I couldn't come up with anything decent myself), so the idea got shelved for *YEARS*. Then came KSaraSara. Some time back, we were shooting the breeze on Discord, and she ended up making a little CYA for me ("Drinks After Work", open a new tab and go read it now! It's awesome!) It was a lot of fun. So much fun, that I eventually looked it up to re-read it, and the author's notes got me thinking... If I wanted an interactive story with different endings, why not just do a CYA?! It made perfect sense, and one of my earliest fandoms had a massive CYA that anyone could contribute to, so why hadn't I thought of it before? So here we are, and writing this has been a fun and challenging experience, and I hope that you all will enjoy it and maybe even join in.

That was fun! I loved the different endings. Whatever happened, the ending was still sweet and WAFFy. I'm glad they didn't go to the party as Superman and Wonder Woman. I hate the pairing. Eeew... Meanwhile, they made a better use of the time. I would love to read more fanfics like this (these) one(s). Andreia

Hi Mary! A Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Fic Looking forward to seeing what you did this time! You always come up with new and creative ways to entertain us! The fact that it’s technically for work, but minus the part where anybody gets anything done, just makes the whole thing worse! Office party during work hours! Which brings up an interesting point: with the amount of overtime and nightshifts Lois does, shouldn’t she have comp time most of the week? It’s not like the Daily Planet wants to pay that much for overtime. Or maybe they do, explaining how Lois can afford such a big apartment in Metropolis. Are we a couple? We’re certainly more than friends now, the lack of any actual dates not-withstanding. We had fic where they were a couple without dating, thanks to a conveniently located supply closet. Then again we also had fic where they were parents without being a couple thanks to the earlier mentioned supply closet. . So, it’s our first party as a-couple-of-people-who-are-more-than-friends-and-want-to-start-dating-but-haven’t-yet. I don’t think this shop has costumes for that category, though. Maybe they have a reporter suit and Superman costume? The Other Costumes… There’s such a wide variety of costumes here, ranging from cheap novelty outfits to elaborate cos-play. I even see different versions of outfits I’d already looked at, and I wonder if these would be better than those others. Or we could just make our own costumes; that might be kind of fun… Ooooohhhh this is a wonderful allegory for fanfic Must make sure to note Mary’s penchant elaborate wordage during the GTA. This is your chance to play along! Create a new fic thread for your entry and post a link to it here with the costume set’s name or general description. You can stick with a standard ficlet post or branch into your very own CYA! Homework? Funny thing though, I have one that actually plays at a masquerade ball. The start doesn’t fit but the spirit (fun with costumes) probably does. And none of it involves Lois and Clark both shedding their costumes while they engage in nookie! Michael

Hi Mary, I’ll be FDK’ing piecemeal… Since I plan to have multiple adventures, I might as well start with Level One, Lulu and the Lone Rider. but there is no way I'm stuffing myself into that “Sexy Cowgirl” rag /Cocks eyebrow/ Do I *want* to google “sexy cowgirl”? especially since that idiot Ralph will probably be around to comment. The Western-style boots and hat are harder to track down, /Psst/ Lois was line dancing prior to season one. and then a quick trip to the hardware store turns up a length of rope for my lasso She could have gotten the Lasso of Truth … /Mind races to Clark, tied up with that lasso, while Lois has her wicked way with him/ LOIS: Now you will not run away from our next date. And I don’t have to share your (sic) chocolate dessert with you (sic). /To fourth wall/ You did not expect me to go dark, did you? This is a Mary story. They might be bloody, but they’re also always vanilla. I step into his apartment and hold out the box with his outfit in it. “Well, don’t just stand there, Partner. Saddle up and let’s hit the trail!” She’s not expecting him to change in front of her, is she? LOIS: Expecting? No… In less time than is remotely fair, Nice one! What exactly is the protocol for this, now? They share a campfire? His eyes meet mine, and it’s obvious he’s caught me staring. What exactly is the protocol for this, now? Do I turn away and pretend to be oblivious to him, like I would have done just a few months ago? Or does our almost-dating status grant me the right to gawk at him like a hormonal teenager? The clock saves me from having to think about it. “We…uh…better get going.”
“Right.” He opens the door for us, looking as flustered as I feel. “We should…right.” You’re doing an adorable sexy-flustered Lois and Clark! “Commander Keen! I bounce around, fighting alien invaders! It’s awesome!”
Clark looks at me, his eyebrows raised slightly. I only shrug. I sternly remind the butterflies in my stomach that I’ve danced with this man before. “Sure!” Yes. And when she floats beneath the ceiling with him, she can remind the butterflies that she’s floated with him before, too. . That frightening encounter with Trask, ranting about alien invaders. Finding out so much about the people and the town that made Clark who he was. Nearly losing him to a madman.
At some point, Clark’s grin starts to fade. He gently pulls me aside, away from the crowd of dancers, and looks at me with concern. “Hey, are you all right?” This is a wonderfully insightful arrangement of words So many thoughts are swirling through my head now that it’s hard to even say. But, I guess if there’s one thing that predominates, it’s…
The Corn Festival
The Close Call with Jason Trask Ooooohhhh! Now, which will I pick first? Michael

Jason Trask it is! Why, you ask? Probably because Lois fuzzying over Jason Trask is giving more angst than Lois fuzzing over hot and steamy usage of haybales in the haybale maze? I rest my hand over his. “I don't ever want to lose you. That's what makes this so terrifying!”
A frown crinkles his forehead. See, when Lois will dump your unreliable chumpy, she will have lost you. So, it’s safer to not date you. Of course, you’re not allowed to date blondes, either, even when you’re not dating Lois. “If I can’t give you everything you want, or be everything you need me to be…” There there. Does it help to tell you he’s not even interested in coitus? Clark brushes a tear from my cheek, though another quickly takes its place. “I don’t need you to do or be anything! You’re perfect just as you are!” Yep alive and fully clothed. He’s easy to satisfy. But then, you’ll want to show me off to your friends, and I’ll piss them off with my opinions. Nah, Diana is also a liberated princess and Bruce enjoys a happy discourse on the merits of locking up criminal mobsters. She should fit right in. You’ll want me to trust you completely around other women, You never completely trust a Clark around a Lois. It’s why they only had one real Lois on the show. and I’ll be paranoid because everything you say will be the same excuses my father gave about his mistresses. Her father also had to return a video about the buxom neighbor visiting the doctor’s office? You’ll want to feel like a rock-star in bed, and I won’t be convincing enough when I fake being impressed. She will be impressed. LOIS: Wow, you have such a great body! You’re just like Superman! CLARK: You we’re right. You’re horrible at faking it. I know that you never slept with Superman. My hat knocks backward, the little string catching around my neck to keep it from falling. This works with the pointy hat, too! You’ll never lose me, Lois. Never! Then how do you explain his running away and / or breaking up with her? “I’ll earn your trust, instead of just demanding it, and if we never reach the point where you can give it, then we’ll work through that together.” Maybe they could practice trust falls some more? “I know where I hope it’s going: somewhere amazing and beautiful. This could imply n-stuff. straighten my spine and kiss him back. Together, we’ll venture into the unknown. Awww… Hay!(Sic) There is no “New Frontier” part posted. /Transposes letters/ “The End”? Seriously? /Presses ‘rewind’/ See you in the next Alternate Reality! Michael

Hi Mary! /Backtracks/ The Corn Festival “We’ve done this before, haven’t we?” Dancing? Thinking? Dancing around each other? “I’ve been so afraid of things changing, between us. But, the more I think about it, it’s not really that much of a change, is it?” Yeah, well, he’s still gonna disappear. They will still smooch and tell their coworkers that it’s for work. And Lois will still not be able to bed Superman. At least for the foreseeable future. So, yeah, things won’t change. But, looking back, that Corn Festival was kind of a date, wasn’t it? We danced together. We had fun together. You even won me a teddy-bear.” Ooooh! Or it’s how Smallville men treat their friends. Explains why Mayson got so confused. “We’ve kissed before, though granted, it was always for a cover.” I step close enough to feel the rumble in his chest as he chuckles. /Points to earlier FDK/ “Whatever this is that’s happening between us, I think it’s been happening for a long time; I just never let myself see it.” Yep. The Daily Planet HR department is so effective at making people hide their workplace relationships, they don’t even know themselves they’re in a relationship. [love …] I think if things do change, it’ll just be…more. More of this. More of *us*.” Awww. /Remembers Lois going ‘more’ during their honeymoon. . No matter what happens, I now know exactly what we are to each other.
PARTNERS Awwwwwww and also ended in a kiss. See you in the middle ages! Michael

I wasn't sure how this was going to work but, as always, it was beautiful. Very creative idea and probably a pain to set up all the hyperlinks, too. Was a little confused on this page, though. In my world, CYA means something other than choose your adventure!

Hi Mary! Knight & Princess The princess gown looks a lot like the dress I wore to prom, and it comes with that cone…hat…thing with the strip of fabric hanging from the top. I’m pretty sure that any and all similarities to Lady Loisette are purely coincidental. “Verily, it shall be an honor to escort such a beautiful maiden to the Planet of Daily!” I’m also reminded of Buffy’s “I’m not much with the damseling”. The funny detail is that in the German version, damsel and maiden are the same word and it is literally the word used for ‘virgin’. “Oh, knock it off,” I scold, but it’s hard to sound stern when laughing so hard. And this just fits perfectly with said former connotation. Happily for them, if Clark and his maiden go visit the dragon, the dragon will still get his virgin blood. Or, rather, not get it because of an urgent need to visit his dentist. Jimmy’s costume is a little harder for me to figure out: coveralls, a fake mustache, and a bright red hat. He reaches us before Perry does and grins up at us. “Mama mia! It’s-a Princess Lois and Sir CK!” Oh, you do different Jimmy’s? At least the Italian hint makes it clear. So, is Jack there as Luigi? “Jimmy, why don’t you plumb me up some more punch and Umm… I’m not sure this is the best way to phrase this request… and then see if you can rescue the secretary pool from Ralph?” Will Mario jump onto the annoying little toad’s head? It always feels good when Perry calls me the top reporter, but I try not to let it show too much. The fact that I now technically share the title with Clark doesn't bother me as much as I once thought it would. Lois is cute! And I like the qualification at the end. It still bothers her, just not as much. and we join several other coup—*pairs of people*— in swaying to the music. Let’s see; there was the one where a frog turns back into a prince by being thrown against the wall…” Or the one where the princess turns into a frog when you marry her. “In the original version, the princess has enough of his shenanigans and throws him clear across the room. Slap! Poof! And suddenly he’s a prince again.” Let’s refrain from doing that with Call-Me-Daniel, shall we? We don’t need a new prince in town. and poison cured by kissing.” Sucking poison out of a wound is an age-old remedy. Female Secretary #1: The snake bit you *where*? Female Secretary #2: I have heard of snakes in toilets, but never one actually biting… Male Secretary: Come on, Ralph, I’ll help you. Ralph: “Being locked in a tower.” I look up into his eyes. “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, ever since…Lex.” She could have let her hair grow out… little things, like how every date was in his territory, surrounded by his kind of people; never anything involving my own usual places or my own peers. Why would Lex want to eat in the company of uncultured bums? Clark, he planted the idea that I thought she was beneath me and that I wouldn’t ever want to see her again!” Nice one about Lucy’s absence! “Years ago, when I did some articles on domestic violence, I learned that the first thing abusers often do to their victims is to disconnect them from everything and everyone, so that they’ll have no one to run to once the beating starts.” Poignant you chose this for the princess theme! His shoulders sag beneath my hands, and his voice is soft. “Superman.” No, silly, the frog. “Oh, Clark!” I stare at my knight in plastic armor, Dull, flimsy armor, not polished steel plate. Awwwww, like a brother! The breastplate over his chest is uncomfortably hard as he pulls me close, but his lips are soft and warm against mine, which makes it an even trade. Awwwwww shake my head. “Just…we’re *really* behind on having that first date now, aren’t we?” Hey, at least he’s still unicorn bait and she’s not pregnant. All that worry about dating and relationship-labeling suddenly seems so pointless. Whatever happens next, I know that right now, I’m with the man I love; a man who loves me back. All is right in the world.
Happily Ever After Awww… and they can even have their fairytale wedding. Complete with frogs and all. This is a fun tale collection Michael

Hi Mary! Superman and Wonder Woman He always seemed a little put out whenever I compared him to Superman, and rightly so: my assessments of him back then weren’t very kind. Yes. Very kind. And the ocean is just a big lake. whether it’s backing me up as I storm the fortresses or just being there for me when I can’t fight anymore. Love the symmetry! : his compassion, his strong morals, his willingness to put himself on the line for others. Translation: always having pizza and ice cream available for Lois. Not sleeping with women other than Lois. Jumping into harm in front of Lois. Wait a second, Superman isn’t willing to sleep with Lois. LOIS: A fatal character flaw. In a way, Clark is my Superman, but with the added bonus of being real. Awww Somehow, that was enough for the tabloids to start linking them together—and the costume makers, apparently. Ooooh, Zara will have a field day with this. but now that I’m past that and able to think about him more objectively… To be fair, she has always objectified him. It would probably be discouraging to have to constantly cancel dates or have them interrupted because of a disaster happening half-way around the globe. It could also provide opportunity for headlines. He would need someone who could handle that, not to mention someone understanding enough to be there for him when the rescues that pull him away from her go wrong. Awwwww. She went deep! . In fact, I’m over him enough to go out with someone else, dressed in costumes that poke gentle fun at a celebrity couple. If he is dating Wonder Woman, I hope they’re happy together. I throw back my shoulders and take the costumes to the check-out. Yeah, completely over him. You know, if the shop had Crusader and Amazonia costumes, this might give Clark an even bigger heart attack. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.midtowncomics.com/images/PRODUCT/FUL/1145270_ful.jpg) Amazonia, Mark/Caped Crusader, Abby Better than the real thing!” Oh? And he knows that *how*? . “So, what do I get to be? Did you find a fake military uniform or something?”
I stare at him, trying to understand the logic behind his guess. “A what?”
“Oh! Right.” Clark shuffles awkwardly and finally looks down at the box. Oops? No discussing satellite secrets! No, you’re not going to be big, tall, and broody. Or do you see your master burglar partner dressed in a purple cat suit with black boots and long fingernails? “Besides, you and Superman actually have a lot in common Like love interests, enemies, and parents. “Um, Lois…I can’t wear this.” Worried it will show outlines that are going to raise hell with HR? His nervous expression is as much unlike Superman as his glasses and unruly hair, but the eyes...the skin tone... My heart starts thudding even before the puzzle completes itself in my head. Superman’s from Kansas! but I haven’t heard a word. “—tell you eventually, but definitely not now or like this.” Boy, is she gonna be surprised when Zara shows up and Clark is all ‘I did tell you I was married but we’re estranged’. My plastic tiara is resting on the coffee table. Right. He got a sexy Wonder Woman sitting in his apartment. His glasses are on the table next to the tiara, a costume accessory next to another costume accessory. Cute! “The fact that I’m your best friend isn’t enough of a reason?” No, friendships frequently sour, but love, love lasts forever. “Right, hoping to know that I loved you. As if my constant chasing after you and swooning over you last year wasn’t any proof.” Umm… “Living an ordinary life.” It’s also the reason why it didn’t work out with the princess. It’s still difficult to process all of this, but it’s clear that there’s something he needs to understand if there’s ever going to be an us:
I Do Love the Ordinary Man
Clark Is Not So Ordinary See you in the conclusions! Michael

Hi Mary! The Ordinary Man “Clark, I know my signals haven’t been very clear… Well, in the beginning, I guess they were certainly clear enough.” Yep. CAT: Eeeeeehhhh… LOIS: I was being sophisticated. Not everyone uses a red light bulb over their door. I realized early on that if I let my feelings win, that if I even acknowledged I had them, I’d be giving you the power to completely break my heart.” There there… I’m not sure when our hands linked, but I give his a light squeeze. Awww “We’ve been hurting each other though, haven’t we?” […]
Clark runs his thumb over my cheekbone and cups my face in his hand. “No more,” he whispers. “I love you, Lois Lane.” What a difference a change in wardrobe makes. and we’ll probably have to figure out how Superman fits into everything, Umm… /hands Lois a diagram drawn by Cat/ it’s not as if we’re going to make it to the party tonight, anyway. So for now, we’re just two people in love with nowhere else we need to be. Do you know just how suggestive this sounds? Cute end tag One more left! Michael

I definitely agree about S/WW, though when trying to think of an in-universe couples' costume based on Superman, it was the only possibility that came to mind (considering that this is pre-ultrawoman). I wasn't sure how this was going to work but, as always, it was beautiful. Very creative idea and probably a pain to set up all the hyperlinks, too. Was a little confused on this page, though. In my world, CYA means something other than choose your adventure! Hehehe, I know the other acronym too. And thanks! The hyperlinks actually weren't as difficult as I'd thought they'd be one I got the basic method for post-linking from discord. Even so, I knew it would be intimidating to anyone who might otherwise contribute to the Other Costumes section, which is why I made it a point to have one of the costume options contain no further links. If anyone wants to join in the fun, you don't need to do all this; just post a normal, linear thing if you prefer. It doesn't even have to be long.

Hi, Darth! Homework? Funny thing though, I have one that actually plays at a masquerade ball. The start doesn’t fit but the spirit (fun with costumes) probably does. And none of it involves Lois and Clark both shedding their costumes while they engage in nookie! Aww, just snip the beginning off and post it! Oh, you do different Jimmy’s? At least the Italian hint makes it clear. So, is Jack there as Luigi? I decided to do different Jimmies...Jimmy's...*versions of Jimmy* because I want to entice people to contribute their own branches, and I thought a potential hurdle might be thinking that you have to stay accurate to whatever is happening in this set. Guys, there is No Continuity. You want Jimmy to be dressed as (insert character here)? Fine. You want him in bed with a cold while Lois and Clark do something else? Fine. The only solid premise is that a barely-dating Lois and Clark are at a costume party for some work-related reason, and the rest of the sheet is blank for you. <3 Fun fact, I was originally going to have Jimmy's costumes be something of a running gag, but the final shape of the CYA ended up not giving me room for it. As part of my "You can expand on this however you want, guys!" campain, I had planned to have One branch have one fork-in-the-plot, one branch have no forks (so people won't feel like they have to have them also), and one branch have many forks (as an invitation to think big if you're the more ambitious sort). However... My plan to have Lois and Clark somehow go to the party anyway despite the obstacles presented by the Superman costume failed worse than a cargo ship made of swiss cheese. I ended up axing it and only having the branches in which they stay home. Otherwise, there would have been a Stay Home/Go Anyway node, with the Stay Home option branching into what's there now, and the Go To Party option having other things happen (though I hadn't figured out what). I think I had delusions of crafting an action plot at some point. No, you’re not going to be big, tall, and broody. Or do you see your master burglar partner dressed in a purple cat suit with black boots and long fingernails? Oh look, someone left a convenient expansion thread lying around, where someone could post a version of events in which this very thing happens... You know, if the shop had Crusader and Amazonia costumes *Coughs and points to afore-said Custom Costumes thread*

Hi Mary, I just realized, I haven't posted the final piece of FDK I should probably fix that... Not So Ordinary “So, if I were to decide that I didn't want Superman in my life at all anymore, would you just give him up?” Actually, the other two women who disapproved of Superman got dumped so quickly, they didn’t even realize their getting dumped. Why would you suddenly want me to give him up?” Because she needs to establish some position of power, and suggesting he give up other women isn’t going to work, according to her experience. Just give me an ordinary life with no powers, no secret identities, and no flying off to save the day?” Yes, he could do that. For a day, perhaps two. Then she’d be dead. “Well, no. I don’t think I could.”
I fold my arms and fix him with my sharpest glare. “Then why is that what you’re trying to sell me?” My blood begins to boil. “You weren’t dead. I was a complete wreck, thinking that you were gone forever and that I’d gotten you killed, and you were just flying around up there without a care in the world!” Uuuuuhhh … /points at fic that uses this particular realization as it’s primary motivation/ I huff. “Who are *you*, then? Clark or Superman?” Lord Kal-El, husband by birth to the Lady Zara. LOIS: “Lois, have you ever wondered what it would be like if you just woke up one day and found out that everything you thought you knew about yourself was a lie?” You mean like last May, when her husband-to-be decided to become Superman? Would you still be Lois Lane, or would you just think of yourself as some kind of…Ultra…Woman?” “Hi, I’m Clark Kent, but some people call me ‘Superman’. I was born on the planet Krypton but grew up in Kansas. I really like you a lot. Will you please go out with me?” Awwwwwww…has he practiced this line a lot in the local single bars? I shake his hand, stifling a giggle. “You mean like on a date?” I pretend to think. “Well, I suppose I could give it a shot. Okay.” Yep, that’s the response he usually gets. instead of going out in disguises, we can spend some time discovering who we really are.
No More Costumes Awwwwwww … they’re discovering themselves without clothes on I like how the endings got progressively more emotionally impactful As to your own FDK: I couldn't help but notice the pointy spikes about the custom fic thread... I am rather busy these couple of weeks due to... let's cal it *other* fic-related work. And no, by "I have" I was referring to a file sitting on my drive with "fill with bytes" scribbled onto it. I'd forgotten Drinks After Work was part of the impetus for this! I'm so glad you found a way to pull it off—so clever and so reminiscent of my days with my nose stuck in a CYA book.

I read the whole thing - it was so fun to have all the options! My first choice for their costumes was Superman and Ultrawoman, and that was a great story, but my favourite was the Princess and Knight one! I love a love confession 🥰🥰🥰 Great job, thank you for sharing your creativity with us!! ❤❤❤❤

*stands up to give a standing ovation* What an amazing ideia! So original!
I loved the romantic moments and the dialogues (and Jimmy dressed as Mario XD). The conversation about Lex and the princess locked in the tower was really interesting. Lois confronting Clark about him not being an ordinary man was great too! My favorite part was "Jason Trask", but everything is brilliant.
Stories are written by the victors. (Hmm, come to think of it, that's not the exact quote...)
