I just joined the boards after reading fanfic for a long time, and am now trying to figure out how to get myself onto IRC so to join everyone for the ceremony.
I hesitated at actually going through with the logging on part, though. I'm at a university with a strict firewall (has the whole webproxy.*******.edu thing). I have a feeling I might have trouble with it. There's one port (in the 3000s) that it uses for everything Internet-related, and that I can get through, though I'm still "firewalled", if that makes sense. Is that useful in any way? Anyhew, if I try to get out with a port that they're blocking, it'll freeze stuff up. So I want to make sure it's OK before I try. Does anyone know about this sort of thing?

Doranwen, I'm sure someone more technically-inclined than I am will come to answer you in due course. But, in the meantime, as a fallback you might take a look at what Karen suggested above:

Just as a 2nd option, if you have problems installing an IRC program on your system, you can try the web-based chat at http://www.undernet.org . Click on Webchat at the top of the screen, and it'll ask you for some information before you log on: Your name, nick, and it will ask for a preferred channel, or other. Once you log in, you can type out the command to log into one of the channels. It works just the same as any other IRC client. It also supports multiple channels, now, which I'm quite happy about.
Good luck getting on IRC! Come and try it out before the Kerths, just to get used to us.

Yes, it helps to get used to us before any event at which you want to actually follow what's going on smile Things can be confusing if you're not used to the way conversations work... and for some reason, people keep telling us we're nuts goofy Can't imagine where they got that idea...

Indeed, Pam. What a shocking idea. We're perfectly sane, perfectly reasonable, and bungee jumping from the highest ficus branch is really just optional. laugh

- I'm your partner. I'm your friend.
- Is that what we are?
- Oh, you know what? I don't know what we are. We kiss and then we never talk about it. We nearly die frozen in each other's arms, but we never talk about it, so no, I got no clue what we are.

No luck. I got the "unable to connect to server" message over and over--I think the firewall is blocking me. I'm going to call ITS tomorrow and see if someone can tell me how to use mIRC with their restrictions. And if it STILL won't work, I'm going to have to go to someone's house this weekend--they'll let me hook my computer up to their DSL, so if I get there a few hours early (Eastern time here) and try it out, I'll have to do it all at once. I'm familiar with some online chat programs, channels, that sort of thing, but it's not IRC. So hopefully the similarities between them will benefit me and not trip me up, lol. I noticed, for instance, somewhere there was a request for no shortened language--and on that other program I use, "np" is used for "no problem", "ty" for "thank you", that sort of thing is second nature to me, might be hard to NOT do. laugh

Just a quick reply on the netspeak thing - rest assured, we all use yw, np, ty and so on! wink It's just the moderators found that excessive netspeak - the i 4got 2 say 2 c u l8r stuff - drives people bonkers. goofy So that's frowned on.

If you can't make it via mIRC, do try the weblink.

Oh good! I don't do excessive netspeak--I'm very perfectionistic about some things, and that includes spelling words properly. Either I shortcut them by initialing (like with ty, yw, and np), or I type the full thing. Plus I type really fast too. laugh Drives everyone nuts on the other channels I visit.
I tried the Webchat--wouldn't connect their either. This firewall is VERY restrictive, I'm positive that is why. Those ports are just plain blocked, I guess. Hopefully I can get them to unblock them or something, or at least get on at that person's house this weekend.
