I may have seen that episode many years ago, but I really don’t remember it. Yes, this was a stressful procedure. They had to move slowly so that they didn’t damage any critical structures.
It required total concentration and coordination so they were both in constant telepathic communication the entire time.
They didn’t affect any structures other than the tumor. She was under anesthesia during the procedure and then there was a period for recovery before she woke up.
After I wrote this section one of my beta readers mentioned that episode as well. I'm sure I saw it as a kid, however I haven't seen an episode of the otiginal series in quite some time.
I just checked the blurb on that ep. In that story the girl was blind.
