While I can't imagine how anyone would teach a child how to read English from spelling out the letters, this is just a wonderful chapter. I love how Jonathan understands that Clark still needs these familiar rules to not be totally afloat in his new life. And it's just a lovely scene how Martha teaches Clark how to read.
