The difference between Jimmy and James - who he was and who is now - is fabulous throughout the story. Clark needed someone when his secret was revealed, and James stepped up to be that person. His solid friendship is evident and admirable.
I have to point out your use of parentheticals. It took me a few parts to get used to them, but then I started craving them, seeking them out, missing them when they weren't there! You writing is a thing of beauty, and this work is a masterpiece.
