PRESIDENT GARNER Gee, that's just the kind of stuff he _said_ you'd say. LOIS What? PRESIDENT GARNER President Elect Doe told me you supported the other side. LOIS Mr. President, _you_ were the other side...! PRESIDENT GARNER I know. But in my heart, I knew he was right. Lois, the whole country's behind John Doe. Get on board. He bears _you_ no ill-will. What's happened to our boy?! LOIS Oh, Martha, I wish I knew exactly. JONATHAN Lois, are you sure he's gone? LOIS Clark vanished through a time window. It was brought here by one of the most truly evil men I've ever met. He came from the future, and he's always wanted two things: to control the world, and destroy Clark. MARTHA But who is this person? LOIS The new President. John Doe. The mere mention of his name brings peace to their eyes. JONATHAN Oh, but that can't be, Lois. John Doe is... well, he's just a darn nice guy. LOIS (nearly losing it) This is what I'm up against. _I_ know who he truly is. And as long as I can hold onto that image, I can think the truth. TOWN HOUSE LIVING ROOM - NIGHT #3 22 Lois is wearily putting out a food spread on the coffee table as Alt Superman crosses to the closet beneath the stairs. LOIS The Kents are already asleep. I picked up a couple things at the market.... Alt Superman enters the closet and in a second emerges as Alt Clark. Lois gives him an odd look. ALT CLARK What? Never tried. (beat) Is that how _he_ does it? LOIS Mmm. ALT CLARK I'll give that a try sometime... LOIS No, it's okay... I mean, you're not him... Sometimes I have to keep reminding myself... ALT CLARK (surveys the spread) Snickers? Plain cake doughnuts? Ding-Dongs... And wine? He's not quite sure what to do. She's flustered. LOIS God, I'm sorry. Where's my brain? I just thought.. ALT CLARK ... That because he likes that stuff, I would. She grabs the wine bottle, putting corkscrew to cork; he puts his hand on the bottle, smiles, and with a gentle squeeze, the cork flies out. She's still holding the bottle, and all this has brought them very close together. She smiles awkwardly, quickly sits on the couch, pours wine as he sits next to her. LOIS (CONT'D) Anyway, did you discover any subliminal message sending device grafted onto the phone system? ALT CLARK Nope. Whatever was there, he must've moved it. ALT CLARK A while back, before I became Superman in my world, a new friend told me to trust in myself. In the power of goodness inside me. She was a very smart woman and I believed her. Lois turns and stares at him, wanting so much to be comforted by his words. ALT CLARK (CONT'D) And now she has to believe me. Lois, love is all that keeps people going sometimes. It's that strong. And you have to grab onto that strength and believe it'll get you through this. It's a lonely world without love. I know. It's how I live my life.
