Inspired loosely by Morgana's fic Wrong Person of Interest. In it, a character gives Lois and Clark some information about Arianna Carlin, but doesn't supply how they know said information.

What if a trusted source-- perhaps Bobby Bigmouth, or someone else-- gave Lois or Clark bad information on a case, on purpose? Of course, being good reporters, following up on the lead would ultimately reveal the truth... But how would they find out the truth? What would motivate the source to do such a thing? Is Bobby being blackmailed? Is he/she covering up for something they actually did? What makes Lois and Clark believe this person, and how far down the rabbit hole do they go before figuring out the truth?

Just a thought.

The first idea that comes to my mind is that Bobby Bigmouth knows Clark's secret and misdirects Lois to try to preserve said secret because he knows which side his bread is buttered on. (Sorry, couldn't resist a food-related idiom here.)
