This is not all that related to anything, but it did cause me to rethink how I understand the name of the show.

For the longest time I always thought Lois was an early 20th-century creation and an odd corruption of Louis, alternate to Louise. I should have realized this was not the case, because I have actually read the source that caused me to rethink this. Lois is a biblical name, appearing in the book of 2nd Timothy, specifically 2 Timonthy 1:5.

This has lead me to realize two things. One, I am now certain that the creators of Superman were not going for a play on Lewis and Clark. I still think the creators of Lois and Clark were.

I'm sure they were - it's too obvious.

Of course, at my house my son was fairly small when Lois & Clark was on the air and he was studying Lewis and Clark - so for the longest time it was 'Lois & Clark' the explorers and 'Lewis & Clark' the show. laugh

Actually, there is one detail that makes me think they were clearly going for the word play. In one of the season 1 epiusodes, maybe it was "Foundling", Lois and Clark are contenders for the Meriweather Award. The explorer Lewis was named Meriweather Lewis.

Well, in DC canon it was Joshua Merriweather who founded the paper that became in Daily Planet. And it's obvious the writers were aware of the Planet's history since they referred to the year of the Planet's founding according to DC (1775).
