I can't remember if this is canon, or if I read it in someone's fanfic, but I recall (whatever the source was) that there were 12 noble Kryptonian families. Obviously the House of El was one of those, and I think there also were Ar and Ra. But does anyone know the other nine?

That would be from Reminisces of New Krypton

The noble houses in that are: Ah, Ar, Do, El, Es, Et, Lo, Mai, Ra, Ro, Ur, and Us.

Ra is Zara's House, Us and Ar come from Superman Returns as founding houses of Krypton.

Thanks! Dandello, I love your fic.

Can I quote those names of noble Kryptonain families in my fic, please?.

Quote
Ra is Zara's House
Does that mean that her full name is "Zara Ra"? (Why do I want to add, "Siss boom bah" after that? ;-) ) <Lynn ducks and runs, grinning>

cheers,
Lynn

Zara's name, traditionally, would be Zara (father's first name) Ra. But I can just see Clark muttering 'Zara Ra-ra-ree...')

Thank you for clarifying Zara's house. When I didn't know her House, I thought I would not have her be in the House of Ra. She couldn't be "Zara Ra" in the fic, due to the "siss boom bah" factor.

Now, of course, since it's canon that she is of the House of Ra, I'll have to put that in.

I think I'll have Lois mutter "siss boom bah" when she hears Zara's name for the first time. wink

Of course, Female Hawk, in her excellent fic, "Awaken My Heart" called her "Za of the House of Ra", so "Za-Ra".

In the comics I'm not sure that women, on Krypton, have their house as part of their name like the men do.

I mean, you have Kal El, Jor El, Jax Ur, and so on. But Kal El's mother was Lara, not La Ra, and his cousin was generally designated as Kara Zor El. This indicated a very patriarcal society that defines women by the name of their fathers rather than by their house.

Just a thought.

So does anyone know Zara's father's name? I'd like to put that in my fic.

Failing that, any good guesses?

The writers never gave Zara's father a name. The name I gave him was Sen-Ra.

Please don't be offended if I quote that in my fic. I'll give you credit. Thanks in advance!

Indeed, in the comics the females have a first name and add their father's name to it, as in Kara Zor-El (Kara, daughter of Zor-El).

But I cannot remember any place where the name of a married woman is mentioned, it might actually change like a woman's maiden name (to the husband's full name or family name, it would make sense in a patriarchal society), it might get deleted after marriage (which would explain why Lara is only ever known as Lara) or stay and probably get the family or full name of the husband added.

I may use part of that. Zara Sen-Ra would become Zara Ra Kal-El. Zara, out of the house of Ra, belonging to Kal-El.

I like that.
