In honor of the Michigan Holiday (or as near as, opening day for deer season), FarmerBabe and I watched Escanaba in Da Moonlight last night.

Yes, Jeff Daniels was responsible for the story and directing. Yes, there is a lot of stupidity. Yes, we enjoyed watching it again.

But for some strange reason it has Sam Lane (Harve Presnell) as the father figure! Your challenge is to provide an explanation. Was there an interdimensional vortex? Adoption? Witness protection? Hiding out from Ellen? How did robot-building Biceps-in-a-Bottle Sam Lane end up in a deer camp in the U.P. (Upper Peninsula of Michigan for those not local.)

The simplest explanation that comes to me is that this is an alt-world where Lois rebelled against her father (not a doctor but a professional hunter) and became a journalist to spite him. Instead of being familiar with medicine, she's a crack shot with a rifle and can dress a deer in near-record time.

And Clark is threatened with very specific firearm-related consequences when she spills the beans about Claude in the EPRAD hanger.

Great! It's tempting to suggest Oz as a setting so "gutted" could have multiple meanings...
