Explanation of cryptic puzzle clues - 04/17/10 04:39 AM
Here are the explanations for the cryptic clues in the crossword puzzle I just posted.
Not fat, even when mixed up? Lane - Lane is an anagram of "lean"
Overturned dirt? Soil - Soil is an anagram of "Lois"
A name worth a hundred birds or whims? Clark - "C" is the Roman numeral for 100. A lark is a type of bird or a whim.
Clark's mother in danger of confusion? Martha - "Martha" is an anagram of "at harm"
An uncle, a father, or more from a backward Spaniard? Sam - "Uncle Sam" is the personification of the U.S. government; Sam Lane is a father, and "Sam" backwards is "mas," which is Spanish for "more"
Named for one of his talents? Jimmy - One can jimmy a lock to open it, and Jimmy has demonstrated his lock-picking abilities
He didn't obey himself? Lex - "Lex" is Latin for "law". Lex Luthor broke many laws
He may not be Superman, but they say he flies? Tempus - "Tempus" is Latin for "time". The saying "Tempus fugit" (Latin for "time flies") is, of course, the basis for one of the episode titles.
cheers,
Lynn
