It's just a way to denote an emotion or attribute. It's not specific to FoLC-dom, I see it a lot on LiveJournal, too.

Strangely enough, Reading!Clark is my favourite; I really don't know why I should care about whether a man can read with a bod like that but it seems that I do (or maybe it's just that bit of arm muscle showing ) ...

I love the reading Clark too. Some intelluctual men can be quite sexy.

The first instance I saw of ! was in the X Files fandom, who knows how many years ago, so it's definitely been around a long time. But it's been slow to arrive here in FoLCdom.
