This is an IRC quiz. First person to answer the question correctly.....gets to wait for the next question wink

First question, just for the record.

If on IRC and someone plays a sound and you don't have it, what do you type?
Posted By: Wendymr Re: IRC Quiz - 04/28/03 04:09 PM
!trenna cuteclark.wav

In other words, it's ! followed by the nick of the person who played the sound, followed by soundname.wav.

Wendy wink
Posted By: LabRat Re: IRC Quiz - 04/28/03 04:10 PM
Type:

!<nick of person who played the sound> <name of wav>.wav.

So if I played a wav called Superman you would type:

!LabRat Superman.wav

What, you mean there's no prize?!

Next question. And I'm really curious to the answer.

How can I get Wendy ready to paste more of WLMC in my IM?

Saskia
Posted By: Wendymr Re: IRC Quiz - 04/28/03 04:15 PM
Umm... well, that would depend, Sas. Have I ever posted any of WLMC in your IM? smile1
Posted By: Saskia Re: IRC Quiz - 04/28/03 04:27 PM
razz razz grumble whinging shock

You mean... no way, it can't be... I'm not getting anything more? Not that I ever have, very correct, but it was worth a try. Somehow, someway and someday I'll find the perfect solution.

So for now I'll leave it at that, as long as part 19 comes out soon!!! Better yet, you are posting the rest of the fic soon! laugh

What about me? I want WLBM in my IM too. Okay, so I guess I'd have to be on IRC and figure out how IM works for that to happen, but a girl can wish wink .

Okay, now lets stay on track help

2. How do you make the comments line....and in different colors?

3. How do you change your nick while online? For instance, going to AFK?

4. Common letters and their uses? AFK; BRB; RE; ROTFL, and anything else you can think of?

Thanks,

(Manual in progress laugh )
Posted By: Bumpkin Re: IRC Quiz - 04/28/03 05:39 PM
2. ctrl k then select your colour...or ctrl k and a number between 0 and 9

3. type /nick [new nickname with out the square brackets] and hit enter
so for me to go to Marns-afk from Marns it would be:
/nick Marns-afk [enter]
Posted By: LabRat Re: IRC Quiz - 04/28/03 06:07 PM
By the comments line you mean something like:

LabRat wonders if that's entirely sane... ?

If so simply type /me and then the text you want. The /me command will be translated into your nick when you hit enter.

I'm not sure what you mean by question four. Whether you're looking for common abbreviations used or if you need an explanation of the ones you've listed?

LabRat (hey, it's 2.30 and I was supposed to be going to bed when I found myself in here...I might work it out better in the morning goofy )

Well, if you're talking about what abbreviations we use and what they mean, here goes...

AFK = Away From Keyboard
BRB = Be Right Back
BBL = Be Back Later
BBIAF = Be Back In A Few
BBIAB = Be Back In A Bit
LOL = Laugh Out Loud
Re = um...well, it doesn't stand for anything. I think it means "hello again" (as in when you redo something, so you rehello)
ROTFL = Rolling On The Floor Laughing (sometimes without the T)
<g> = grin
<bg> = big grin
<vbg> = very big grin
<eg> = evil grin
(you can also combine the above, sometimes ending up with very weird concoctions like <vevbg> :p )
<inniocent> = when you've done something evil and would like to claim it as innocent. wink

Bethy (who is sure there is more which she will remember as soon as she goes to bed)
Posted By: HatMan Re: IRC Quiz - 04/28/03 09:05 PM
well, there's also

TTFN: ta-ta for now
TTYL: talk to you later
BTW: by the way
IM(H)O: In My (Humble) Opinion
AFAIK: as far as i know
IOW: in other words

(and, btw, i'm told some people use <eg> for "embarassed grin," rather than "evil grin." some people are odd... wink )

then there are the FoLC-specific acronyms like...

FoLC: Fan of Lois and Clark
WAFF: warm and fuzzy feeling
WHAM: varies, but i think Wrenching, Heart-wrending, Agonizing Moment is more or less accepted

anyone else got something i'm forgetting? smile

Um, I'm sure I can think of some...

otoh = on the other hand
tx = thank you
yw = you're welcome
np = no problem
cya = "see ya" -- used when someone's leaving

Can I add a question, Trenna? <g>

What does "opping" mean?

PJ cool
Posted By: Saskia Re: IRC Quiz - 04/29/03 05:41 AM
Opping, let's see if I can explain that in not too many words.

If you're opped, that means you've got a @ in front of your name. For me, that would give @Saskia. An opped person has all sorts of cool powers. You can change the topic, you can kick, ban, op, de-op, voice and de-voice people. All lots of fun. Not that it really matters, as long as you're in the channel you can talk with the others.

Oh, and some other common IRC abbreviations:

AIW!! = Annette is Wonderful!! smile1
Posted By: Karen Re: IRC Quiz - 04/29/03 06:20 AM
As far as question #2 goes, that's only for mIRC. I use BitchX (linux) and ircle (mac), which both use colors, but I have no idea how to use them. Since colors show up differently on different systems and with different characters, they can get kind of annoying, at least to me.

My personal favorite acronym, which was put together years ago..
roflmaowtimeapimp - rolling on the floor laughing my a** off with tears in my eyes and peeing in my pants. But that's not used much wink

And there's other random acronyms that pop up that relate to story names.. sometimes with this, you just have to ask laugh
Posted By: Trenna Re: IRC Quiz - 04/29/03 09:03 AM
Thanks everyone, this is going well. These instructions are for IRC because of the LoisClark channel.

More questions...

How do you send stuff to people while on the channel?

How do you play a sound you have on your computer?

What is this SWTGTWWSSK (I know, I've got the letters wrong wink ) club?

Trenna,
who's extra project is to make an IRC Chat manual for FoLCs that is easier to read than the one mIRC has
Posted By: Karen Re: IRC Quiz - 04/29/03 09:11 AM
Okay, let's see if I can answer these without being at a graphical IRC client... (not supposed to use IRC at work? let linux become your new best friend.)

To send a file in mIRC, right-click on the person's name, click on send file, browse the file, click on open, and hope it goes. In ircle, click on the person's name, and if you have the DCC button in the userlist, click on that. If not, click on Commands at the top, then click on DCC Send. For a command-line dcc send, type in /dcc send <nick> <filename>.

Hrm. To play a sound to everyone, it's /sound <channel> <sound>. To yourself, its /splay. I think. Dunno if this works on all clients.

As for the club, I'm not sure, but does it start with "Swear to god that we're writing..." somethign something something? huh
Posted By: Bethy Re: IRC Quiz - 04/29/03 09:28 AM
Pam said that you can use tx for thanks. Another common one for thanks/thank you is ta.

As for sending stuff, on mIRC (which is the only one I know how to use) I always use DCC. To do this you:

Click on someone's nick on the right of the channel to select them.

Right click to see a menu.

Select DCC. Within that, select send (if you select chat, it will open a private window with that person -- what people will call an IM window). It will open a window with your computer's files. Select whatever it is that you want to send, the same way you open a document in Word, for ex, and then choose send. And you're good to go!

I believe that is the Society of Writers Against The Use of Annoying *s. Or something like that. Someone else remember the exact name?

Bethy
Posted By: LabRat Re: IRC Quiz - 04/29/03 09:38 AM
Can't remember the exact acronym, but it's definitely a protest against authors ending story segments with ************* Mostly, it's against ending smoochies or steam scenes with ******* (That's sort of the modern equivalent to 'cut to waves lapping on beach, violins playing...') laugh

Yeah, but that's not an acronym so much as an expression used Across the Pond -- I'd say England, or UK, or something, but inevitably someone thwacks me and tells me I'm using the wrong term wink

I thought about adding it in, but it was too complicated, and I gave up. <g>

PJ
Posted By: HatMan Re: IRC Quiz - 04/29/03 12:12 PM
yeah. i found the "ta" thing confusing when i first encountered it. i was taught to use "ty" for "thank you." i could understand "tx" for "thanks," but assumed for some time that "ta" was somehow a typeo. after seeing it used for the 5th or 6th time or so, however, i began to suspect that it wasn't a coincidence... laugh

Paul
Posted By: LabRat Re: IRC Quiz - 04/29/03 12:21 PM
LOL, Pam - yes, used UK-wide for thanks and not an acronym.

LabRat smile
Posted By: AnnieM Re: IRC Quiz - 04/30/03 11:03 PM
Wait a minute. Wait a minute.

ta is not an acronym? I had no idea. I'd figured out pretty quickly that it meant thank you and figured it stood for "Thanks a lot." It never occurred to me that it wasn't an acronym.

So, is this something people say, or just write? If it's spoken, how is it pronounced? Tah? T-A?

I'm intrigued by this for some strange reason. <G>

Annie
Posted By: LabRat Re: IRC Quiz - 04/30/03 11:22 PM
Tah. It's just a shortened version of thank you, commonly used. And, yes, used in both written and spoken forms.

Posted By: Kaethel Re: IRC Quiz - 05/01/03 02:20 AM
Yay! The STPWFIGSW* got a mention! smile1 The exact translation of the acronym is "Society To Prevent Writers From Interrupting Great Scenes With ******************"

There's also the SCFLSLH (Society Campaigning For Lois's Shoulder-Length Hair), which got recently attacked by Tank and will respond in kind. evil evil evil laugh

Thanks Trenna, you're a star! I don't have irc yet, so this is reference for when I do.

I have got a Q though. What, if any, is the difference between mIRC and IRC?

Loriel (who must find time, sometime soon, to download IRC)
Posted By: Bethy Re: IRC Quiz - 05/01/03 08:12 AM
Didn't know that ta was an Across the Pond expression. I learn something new even after school is out! smile

And Loriel -- IRC is the general term. mIRC is the specific IRC program that people use. Mac users have... IRCle, I think. I don't know what other programs are available.

Is that about as clear as mud now? :p

Bethy

Ah, now I understand. Or at least better than I did! wink Will become crystal clear, I hope (!), when I get started! Eventually!

Posted By: ChiefPam Re: IRC Quiz - 05/01/03 09:25 AM
As far as I know, IRC is the term for the network of servers; mIRC and IRCle are the programs you use to connect and communicate with the IRC network. mIRC is shareware -- you can download it here: www.mirc.com and then register it later if you think it's worth it. I think it's a great program, and it's a nice way to hang out with friends smile

The archive has a section in their FAQ about it: http://lcfanfic.com/faq_archive.html#whatisirc and the "channel" a lot of us hang out on is #loisclark -- it's password-protected just to keep out the random trolls and make sure we're not corrupting minors wink You can sign up for the password here: http://www.nfanfic.net/loisclark.html

And everyone is welcome smile Of course, you may come in, see us acting like loons, and decide to get out while the gettin's good <g> but that's a risk we'll have to take wink

PJ
Posted By: Loriel Eris Re: IRC Quiz - 05/01/03 09:46 AM
Oh, willing to take the risk! :p I just need to find some free time, and then co-ordinate my free time with a 'quiet' time on the net, so that it doesn't take too long to download. (I'm with a pay monthly for unlimited acess ISP, but they throw me off after 2hrs so if something's in the middle of downloading I loose it - it happened when I tried to download a video. frown Will need to time it better next time!) Anyway, I think the free time at home (where I can't as easliy spend hrs on the net without parents remarking 'Don't you have exams soon?') may prove elusive for a while! It would be good if I could use it at uni! I would never leave here.

Loriel (who really should go home as its almost 6pm and she had done no work since just after 2... kept getting distracted!)

/me raises an eyebrow. She finds it very suspicious that Pam claims this is an "easy one" yet conveniently forgets to answer the question....

But she's missed her chance now, because I know the answer! <EG>

TDASC is the Tireless Defenders Against Saint Clark. I know this well because Kathy won't let me get away with writing Clark as an angel who never does wrong. When I get my story back with the note "TDASAC" I know I've written him as a saint rather than a regular guy. <G>

I'm actually not sure if I've got the acronym right, I'm just guessing since I know what it means. Someone correct me if I've got the actual words wrong.

Posted By: HatMan Re: IRC Quiz - 05/04/03 10:45 PM
sorry, mel. not much to that one, iirc. contact ended with clark breaking up with lois "for her own good." that got a lot of folcs rather upset with him, and some of them decided that they wanted to educate clark about the brilliance of that idea with the help of a kryptonite baseball bat. great idea, very fun, but not much of a story to tell.

if you want a good story, i guess you're going to have to go back to harry potter. or the archive. always plenty of good stories there, and you don't even have to wait for the next part (silly authors, taking time to sleep and living in different time zones and actually waiting a couple of days between story posts...)

Yeah, silly authors. You're all super: you don't have to sleep. And of course you can stay up all night so you can post your stories when *I'm* up. And hey, just post the next part right now, 'cause I'm on the edge of my seat here!

Howdy

The Lovely Evil Elena took this pic for me when I was figuring out how to get on.

[Linked Image]

It shows the server she recommended with the big red arrow (at least for the L&C channels), and then after you pick a nickname, click connect to IRC. Then it'll take forever to connect (if it's my computer <g>) and a join channel screen will come up...the one I go to is #loisclark so I type

'#loisclark password'...the L&C ones are password protected.

Also go here for more info http://lcfanfic.com/faq_archive.html#whatisirc

The Archive there has plenty of info on it, plus there are people way more IRC coordinated than I am here <g>.

Jen
Posted By: LabRat Re: IRC Quiz - 05/27/03 12:41 AM
Jen's already pointed you to the ARchive FAQ, Caroline, where you'll find basic instructions, which should hopefully help you get started.

Once you have mirc downloaded and installed, the main thing to remember about connecting to an LNC channel is that you must use an Undernet server from among those on the server list. If you don't you'll probably end up sitting in an empty channel. <G>

Any undernet server will do - if you don't get a connection first time, simply switch to another and try again. Very rarely, mirc is so busy that none of them will let you connect, but most times you should be able to get on with one of them.

You can tell when you are connected by the fact that after the rush of text you get you are greeted by a 'Fact of the Day' from your chosen server. You see that on the screen - you're in.

If you have problems along the way - just ask! We've all been there. It is never a dumb question. smile

LabRat (remembering sitting in a channel of her own for hours because someone forgot to tell her it had to be an Undernet server....)
Posted By: rivka Re: IRC Quiz - 05/27/03 09:34 AM
Really, Labby? I thought it was just me! blush

I sat there for hours, several times, trying different times of day... and wondered where everyone was! Then I saw a post that casually mentioned the Undernet... and these days, I can occasionally be found there. wink
