It's a pretty sad commentary on American society that companies feel the need to protect themselves with such a self-evident statement.

The mind-boggling one is the allergy warning "contains nuts!" on a packet of nuts.

That is probably because most places that make snacks have multiple lines running and each line changes what it makes so you make each thing for a day or so and switch. Easier and no risk of forgetting if every package gets stamped than switch it as part of each change. You need it on all the other things since if you have nuts as one or more of the things the dust will get in every package and some stray nuts might be in a hopper when you switch.
