I tried to avoid using the term 'shades of grey' but it just seemed apt.

I've always been surprised by that comment from Lois. It seemed so much like something Clark would say

So true of a fear! I'm sure Lois' interest in his secret was there. By this point in the series they are becoming pretty close friends--I'm sure Clark would be debating, toying with the idea of outting himself to Lois (even if it wasn't likely something he would do at this point).

Often in fics, Lois gets really angry when she discovers Clark's secret. I always believed that she's really mostly embarrassed by the fact that she didn't see it for herself sooner. If she had some time to think about it, she would realize, quite easily, why Clark hid the truth. Being disappointed in Clark for how long he kept his secret from her is another matter.
