This story is a lot shorter than the previous installments in the series, simply because I really struggled to write it. It was so much harder to come up with something to write about in Smart Kids! There's a reason it's one of my least favourite episodes.

Superman has become an unstoppable juggernaut, taking over Clark Kent. But becoming him has given me something invaluable.

The ability to be me.

Gad! I agree with you! I have only seen this episode once and that was more than enough.

Still, it is true, if Clark had not been found by the Kents who knows where his life would have ended up.

When I look at the kids of the Beckworth School, I can't help but think 'there but for the grace of God go I.'

I could have ended up like these kids.

I was lucky.
THIS is the plot that was missing from Smart Kids. If this motivation for Clark had been brought up during the episode, it might have resonated with all of us differently. notworthy Great insight! clap

I wonder what kind of person I'd be now if it wasn't for the Kents. So many of my values and my sense of ethics come from them. If they weren't there, would I be more like Luthor, for example? Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
A super powered Luthor is cause for nightmares.
Sounds like a good thing for someone to delve into and discover in a fanfic. smile Would Clark have ended up like Luthor had he been raised in an orphanage, treated as loser and a test subject like the Smart Kids?

There's one thing that I envy the Smart Kids, however.

When it came to their differences, they had a choice. They could choose to be normal.
I don't have that choice.
Another great insight!

My differences will forever mark me as what I am- the sole survivor of an alien world.
While this is a great line, Clark actually didn't know he was the sole survivor of Krypton until Jor-El told him so the Foundling.

I'll agree that Smart Kids was the network's way to pander to the kids (or the show's producers to pander to the network) and not write for the show's audience, but I have to say that your story is the most insightful thing I've read pertaining to it. You've brought meaning to a plot than even the show's writers couldn't find. So, even though you struggled with finding something to say, it was a most worthwhile struggle. Well done!

Amazingly done, NostalgiaKick clap.

Smart Kids is very easily one of my least favorite episodes wink. For everything that it is lacking. Virginia stated exactly what I was thinking while reading your story--you FOUND the plot! hyper. I completey am impressed by this piece because if the writers had followed a bit of your lead, I think this episode could have been so much better.

Also, your thoughts on how the Smart Kids could choose to be normal, how Clark can not. Really powerful. I love the depth you found (in not that deep of an episode).

Again, you totally made me think--made me look at this episode and see all the possibilities that could have been.

Very impressed notworthy

Gah! Horrible episode!

However, I love Clark seeing himself in the kids and wanting the choice that they have. At least, I could see him wanting the choice when he was a child with developing powers. As an adult and as Superman, me would never make the choice to be normal (even with his love of Lois as a motivating factor). But I really can see that he would feel like a kindred spirit and that's why he wanted so much to help them.

Nice work!

Again, great insight into Clark here. I love how he wants to help everyone he meets, including these children. He empathizes with everyone, a valuable trait that I think would keep him from becoming the Luthor-shaped monster he thinks he might have turned into in different circumstances. The last few paragraphs were very powerful!
