I just read an article that stated that common law marriages were still possible in Kansas and in other places (such as Washington DC). Therefore, if two people were romantically linked, lived together, (and had children together, if the case maybe), after 7 years they were considered legally married even without a ceremony or a certificate.
What if Metropolis is one city where it's still legal?
Lois and/or Clark's apartments were destroyed during Nightfall (for example, but other scenarios could be the cause), so they move in together. They continue to work together and live together (as friends/partners) for 7 years, only to discover (somehow) that they are legally married. How do they discover this? Does Clark try to marry someone else, and Lois contest it? Does the state contest it? What happens next?
What if the married couple was Alice and Perry? Martha and Jonathan (in Kansas)? Or Jimmy? Or maybe Clark and Lana (from their previous relationship / cohabitation in Kansas) and now Clark wants to marry Lois and Lana contests it!

In The Accidental Husband by Erin Klingler, there was apparently a law that stated that people checking into a hotel as husband and wife were, in the eyes of the law, married. Of course, their undercover operation in HiM comes back to haunt them. They find out when Lois applies for a license to marry Lex and discovers that she can't get such a license since she is already married to Clark. Great fun. Joy, Lynn

That is a great story, Lynn, and you're right, my synopsis idea is a bit close to that one. Hmmmmm. Maybe that Clark and Lois are forced to live together as friends, but everyone thinks that they're already married... AND now we're into KatherineKent's Practically Married territory.  Maybe it would work better if it was the Kents or Alt-Clark and Lana, and after Alt-Lois shows up, Lana contests Clark's availability to marry Alt-Lois just to torture him?  Now, we've gone from situation comedy into heavy drama genre. There's a story there somewhere, I just know there is. Everyone put on your thinking caps!

Great ideas for stories! KenJ also addressed this in a fashion similar to Accidental Husband (sort of but not quite since he gave it his own wonderful twists). The first is his Matchmaker Style Series, with The Green, Green Glow of Home -- Matchmaker Style being Part 1. And a different take in The Matchmaker Files - An Unusual Proposal In An Unusual Proposal, the law is the solution to a problem in the story. I think there are also nfics for both on this site.

There are no new ideas just interesting twists. A twist might be that when they were still in college they shared a hotel room because it was the only one left so they've been married for a decade without knowing it. Spring break or they both were at a convention or some such.

Might be interesting if their addresses were commingled for the necessary length of time in an official database without their knowing it.
