Intrigue!  Yeah, we knew Lex and Tempus were dealing dirty behind the scenes, and now Clark has proof. Good thing it's in writing and not just Clark's word. Let's see what happens when he gets back to Lane Manor.

Intrigue! Yeah, we knew Lex and Tempus were dealing dirty behind the scenes, and now Clark has proof. Good thing it's in writing and not just Clark's word. Let's see what happens when he gets back to Lane Manor. Yeah, I guess it might be a little obvious to us (but hopefully not *too* obvious!). And it's a really good thing that Lois has so patiently taught Clark how to read. It's exactly what he needed to be able to give Lois a chance of breaking her engagement. Thanks for reading!

Thank goodness he is out of there! Wow, DC--you had me on pins and needles the whole chapter   . I really hope they (Luthor/Tempos) somehow can't pin this all back on Clark--figure out the note had to be dropped in the stable, Clark was in the stable, etc. I'd hate to think of what would/could happen  ? But...now the Lanes will know the truth, and most importantly, hopefully Lois can get out of her engagement. It seems like there are a lot of issues to still overcome, but that maybe a light was turned on at the end of the tunnel? Hoping . More...pretty please???  Laura

But is it the end of the tunnel, or an oncoming train? You'll find out soon!  Glad to up the suspense for a little here. Clark was sweating bullets the whole time, I can assure you!

ude turned on his heel and walked off. With a series of grunts and half-formed sounds, August heated up some chicken and vegetable soup for Clark and gave him a small loaf of warm, flaky breath. A draught of cold water washed everything down. Clark was surprised at the meager meal. Lex is one cheap dude and he passes that cheapness onto his servants. I bet that August the cook is hoarding food and selling it on the black market. "Profit can't be the only reason those two are allied," he whispered to himself, staring at the letter without really seeing it. "There's a bigger picture I'm not seeing here."
He put the letter away again, for safe-keeping, then crawled beneath the thin, but adequate blankets. For a long time, he lay awake in the dark, trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Whew!  Clark is on the road back to stately Lane Manor! Still he ain't home yet so I gotta think Nigel is only one step behind him. I wonder how that messenger is going to explain what happened to Lord Lex's little missive. Man, it is a long wait until the next installment!

Lex strikes me as the type to severely "punish" any servant who "wastes" resources of any kind. Including being generous with food. August might seem tough, but he's likely just watching his own back.
Clark's as safe as he can get right now - snug in his room in the inn, door locked, and far from Luthor Manor. Here's hoping he's actually about to sleep before heading back to Lane Manor in the morning.
