At first, I -- like Cedric -- was worried that Lavinia was falling for Lucius's slick trap. Thankfully, by the end she seems too smart for a man such as Lucius. I'm glad that she noticed something about Cedric that wasn't boring and it was kind of her to defend him to his uncle. Did the Avenger rob from the rich to help the poor? Were they the poor his uncle refused to help, even though as landowner he was supposed to? Will Lavinia go with Cedric to look at the ledgers and livestock? Will Lucius insist on coming along?

I think we'll definitely have to give Lavinia and Cedric a field trip, don't you? :-) And, since "three's a crowd", we'll have to figure out a way to ditch Lucius. Serves him right!

Lavinia's brown eyes took in every detail of Cedric's appearance--his coat was well-enough made, but not the most fashionable; he wore no wig, rather his hair was tied back in a simple, black riband; his face, though pleasant-looking did not form smiles as easily as his uncle's; his eyes, which he kept mostly down-cast and nearly hidden, held no spark. He was personable enough, she supposed, but hardly in the same league with his fashionable uncle, or her highwayman. His bow was formal, but awkward, and his French stilted; she thought him rather dull. As she watched Cedric leave, however, she could not imagine anyone further from her romantic rescuer than this sturdy, practical individual. Cedric listened with growing dismay as Lavinia appeared to be captivated by the Earl. He had learned, through bitter experience, that Lucius could not be trusted. Surely, he argued with himself, a woman of Lavinia's obvious intelligence must be able to see through a man as shallow as his uncle, but the evidence before his eyes was leading him to believe otherwise. It flashed through her mind that Lucius was about the same height as the Avenger, and that his French was excellent, but--! There was ... something in his manner that was incongruent with her memories of the Avenger. She had felt a connection with the Avenger that she did not feel with Lucius. Of course, it was possible that Lucius was such an excellent actor that he could appear to be two entirely different people, but she didn't think that was the case here....The Earl was perhaps more charismatic than many of the men she'd previously encountered but, after her disastrous relationship with the Vicomte Claude, she wasn't about to succumb to mere charisma! ![[Linked Image]](http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/emb/t1812.gif) Something in her had responded to something in him; this was a thing beyond words, a thing of the heart and emotions only, and yet very real to her. She could not ignore it. She wanted instead the depth of character that she'd sensed in her highwayman.
Lavinia, trust your intuition. Your highwayman IS NOT Lucius. You just don't fully realize who it is yet.

Good observations, SupesFan. :-)
They say you only get one changes to make a first impression. Fortunately for Cedric, Lavinia has learned the hard way that first impressions aren't always accurate. Keeping an open mind and following her intuition are definitely better choices for her.

I am loving that Lucius is not making that great of a first impression on Lavinia. I, like Virginia, was wondering about that 'issue'. Field trip? YES, please. Can not wait for that  ... Laura

I am loving that Lucius is not making that great of a first impression on Lavinia. She's a smart lady. Plus, she had that bad experience with Claude, so she's likely to be suspicious of a flashy exterior. When it comes to depth of character, Lucius can't hold a candle to our favorite hero. Won't be long now. ;-)
