On the whole, I'm delighted with my brand new iPad. But I have one huge issue: in order to be able to do Archive tasks, I downloaded the MS Excel app for iPad and put an Excel file with my Archive spreadsheet onto iCloud.

But I can find no way to access the iCloud file. When I open up Excel on the iPad, it says there are no recent files available to view. It's like there's absolutely no connection between the iPad and iCloud.

Help!

Oh and second problem - when someone sends me a story file as an email attachment, clicking it opens a read only copy with no options to edit the file or save it to somewhere for storage. Obviously, I need to do both. Any idea how? Thanks!

It looks like there are ways to do it, but the file gets converted to an iWork document which may not be what you want.

If you only need to read the file, not edit it, I'd suggest printing it as a PDF and saving that to icloud.

Thanks, Marcus. I have found a method of getting attachments to read only, through using Open Office, but, unfortunately, on most occasions, I need to edit the doc.

I am currently baffled by iCloud, it has to be said. I cannot understand how it functions. Earlier this evening, after extensive web searches, I couldn't even work out how to do something as basic as delete music tracks. It just seems to have no logic to it, whatsoever.

Ah, well...onwards and upwards... <g>

Okay, scratch that. <g>

Just realised that the delete fix I tried earlier, which hadn't seemed to work, actually has. Guess it took iPad a time to catch up. Yay, finally, a success.

Have also just discovered that I can use the Google Drive app to store relevant Archive data & spreadsheets. This is what I used on the Nexus. And, just tried to work with MS Word on an email attachment and this time by using the convert & edit button, I was able to both edit it and save it to the Cloud.

I suspect this method won't work for all attachments, depending on file type, but, hey, that's a battle for another day. I've also yet to figure out how to access files in the Cloud if I want to attach them to an email. But guess I'll get there at some point.

In the meantime, I'm chalking this up as a win and ending the day much less frustrated than when I began it. <g>

Forgot to say that I use Dropbox and an app called DocsToGo which supports the Microsoft office formats and does allow editing. I think it cost a couple of pounds to buy the app.

I ws going to try Dropbox but got spooked by its insistence that it had to have access to the iPod camera. Couldn't imagine why it would need to and didn't like the security issues.

So, you'd consider that isn't something I'd need worry about?

I've noted DTG, but hadn't explored it further. Will take another look.

Thanks!

It's so that you can transfer pictures to and from the iphone to other devices. I was a bit surprised by this myself, but it doesn't appear to do anything horrible.
