Because of the number of feline avatars, I'm guessing there are a lot of cat lovers out there

well, you got me exactly with the first option. i'm a dog person by nature. grew up with a dog. never lived more than a year or so without a dog. of course, a couple members of my family are allergic to cats. one of my sisters is very allergic to cats. still, i prefer a companion who comes over when you call and is more sensative to your emotions (the dog i grew up with was the best shrink i've ever had, and she charged a lot less, too.. ).

still, i'm a bit surprised you didn't have a voting option for those who don't like animals at all. i know, i know. hard to understand, but people like that do exist.

Sorry, I can't vote in this poll. I don't own a cat, so that makes it 0. But I'm not a dog lover.

I used to have a cat for years, but lately my mother doesn't want a pet at all. I like most animals, so another option would have been nice.

I do have fish in the pond in the garden tho, which is also a good reason to not have a cat. But I promised myself to get a cat (for the company) when I get a place of my own.

Count me in as one of the cat lovers!

I have two cats and three kittens ... it's a cute little family [g]. The dad is gray and white (his name is Clarkie) and the mom is all gray (her name, naturally, is Lois). Two of the kittens are gray and white, and one is almost all gray like his mommy. Their names aren't Lois and Clark related, because my parents were like, 'please, no more!' so I relented [g].

We live on a farm, so all of our cats have plenty of room to roam and go chase mice. In fact, Lois just came trotting up the hill to our house the other day, her latest catch proudly hanging from her mouth. She then promptly dropped in on the front porch for us to see. It was lovely [g]. My dad had to take it and throw it in the field. He was happy -- one less mouse in the barn [g].

Unfortunately I'm extremely allergic to cats and dogs.

I've been on an injection programme for over 4 years .
I can actually go near them now but couldn't possibly own one or live in a house where anyone else has one.

Well, what I have to vote for (1 cat) is unfortunately true. If you count the number of cats who own me *now*. I *had* two cats before I moved to Vancouver, but they were bad movers so I had to give them up for adoption. I sort of consider myself a three-cat person now because of that. (Although if I were to count the cat we had when I was a kid, that I loved to death, but that because we lived in the jungles of Africa and he got eaten by some wild animal, I would be a four-cat person...) Don't know... Ah well

Melisma (under her Rock, missing Midnight, the all-black wild animal lunch from her African childhood; Melisma, the black and white tux she got while living in Ontario, had there and moved with her from there to Quebec and then central BC; and Spot, the ginger tabby kitten she got in central BC and had to leave there with Melisma because they were such bad movers; and now Tica, the black and white tux she had to leave with her parents in Vancouver when she came to Korea for a year, and who will probably consider her parents her humans by the time she gets back, because they spoil her rotten, just as any ordinary grandparents would do - although her parents refuse to be called Tica's grandparents!!!!)

I'm currently up there with a total of four... My purrsonal cats are the two girls - Mitten is a ragdoll who's lovely face looks just like the kitty in my avatar and the other, Ramey, is a very round rescue I found at a local petstore.

The boys, Squeaky and Cougar, are my girls' cats. I used to be a dog person, but frankly, four cats are nowhere as near as much trouble as one dog.

I have a grey tom cat named AJ. My mom has furry orange one named Butterscotch, or as she calls him: Bella. We've recently added Bailey to our clan. She's a buff colored, prue bred, cocker spaniel. I actually just got her ACA papers: Bailey's Irish Cream, which is funny because I don't drink much so I've never had it.

I like cats (everyone that has talked to me on AIM can see that from my Hello Kitty buddy icon ) but I am very allergic to them. I am a big dog person . Even though I am allergic to them, too, my family has always had a dog. I think I've gone for like 2 months in my life without having a dog. My avatar is a picture of my dog, Max - he's almost so ugly that he's cute .

Another dog person here. Although I don`t have one I surely would like to have one around.

It`s not that I don`t like cats or anything like that, it`s just.... you can`t take them for a walk and , the ones I know, pee everywhere.. and I mean everywhere

I think it's probably pretty well known that I have a cat called Scrabble. She's tabby and white, and around 16 years old (we don't know for sure, since I adopted her from a shelter when she was two or so).

This one was hard for me to vote. I have 1 dog, however..... my roomate has "rescued" 3 cats all of which claim me as "thier person". I have desperatly tried to convince them otherwise, but.... if you've ever "owned" a cat, as the poll states "they own you". GRRRRRR!

I'm a dog lover - big dogs. We have 11 year old black lab who is not too thrilled with our newish puppy. Molly is an 8.5 month old Great Pyrenees who's pushing 80 lbs. She's already taller than the lab. Heck, she's almost as big as one of my coworkers!

Well, I was all ready to vote zero, but then the zero option said I had to be a dog lover. So I can't vote - I'm totally ambivalent about pets, be they cats, dogs, fish, snakes, alligators, etc. Well, actually, you could probably count me amongst the anti-snake and alligator brigade, but you get my drift.

PS - as I've said before, sometimes I wish pollsters wouldn't place interpretations on their choices. At best, it makes it harder to pick options, and at worst, it makes me feel like I'm having words put in my mouth which really don't fit with my usual idiom, and that makes me cringe a little when I'm voting.

Having said all that, it's not a big hill of beans. I certainly don't want to dampen enthusiasm for polls, 'cos they're good fun.

PPS What on earth is Scrabble doing on your dining room table, Wendy? Does that animal have no sense of shame?

Well, I currently only have 1 cat, Sammy Cat , named after the cat from Xanth. He pretty much owns me, or at least, my pillow. He's my baby, so I keep taking pictures of him.

Over the years, I've had a lot of pets. When I stayed at my Dad's house for my wedding, he had 7 cats, 5 kittens, 3 dogs, 1 bird, 2 ferrets, and I think the chinchilla. He's down to about 4 cats, 2 dogs, and 3 large birds. Once my real website comes back up, I'll have to post a few pictures he's sent me of the birds. My old puppy, Betsy, has gone on to greener pastures, but she'll always have a place in my heart.

I'm a dog person, all the way. I do like some cats - usually the friendlier ones that act like a dog!

I've been known to tell as many stories about my dog, Shadow (the amazing Wuss dog), as about my children.

Birds and fish leave me quite cold, although I once had a cockatoo sit on my head, which is more fun than it sounds.

Actually, sometimes, I even embarrass myself by how silly I get around dogs; I make a huge fuss.

Well, I voted for zero, but it's because I'm not allowed to have any pets in my apartment. I am more a dog person, but I love cats too and would definitely have one if I was allowed. There's no way I could have a dog right now - either in a small apartment or because of my crazy work schedule - but I would love to have a cat. If only I could convince my landlord....

Unfortunately, I had to vote '0,' not because I'm a dog person, but because of a certain gene that has been passed along in my family.

But, honestly, I am both a cat person and a dog person, if that's possible. I love them both! Life is so unfair!

Everyone knows I love my cats. One of my riding students did a bronze sculpture for me (she sells them, but I got the artists proof)

My wife and I used to have one cat each, but after our first child, my cat went crazy.

After six months, we were forced to give mine away.

We have two cats, Selena Kyle Spear and Colleen Calle Spear (AKA C.C.). Both names are based on comic book characters...one is Batman and the other Superman.

Selena is the oldest and we've also had her the longest, so she's also known as Queen Selena. She doesn't claim to own us, but her attitude says, "This is my house. I just let you live here." When she goes flying from the coffe table to the chair, I usually call her "UltraKitty" much to my hubby's annoyance ("Must everything refer back to Lois & Clark?!?").

C.C. is more of the playful, cuddly lap-kitty of this family. She's definitely my "Writer's Block" when I'm trying to work on fanfic.

I just wish I had pictures to show.

Does having an 18 month labrador who seems to think he's a cat count?

Homer's cutest trick for interrupting me while I'm working on the pc is to put his front paws on the windowsill (which puts his back to me, beside my chair) then slowly lean back, turning his head to view me plaintively. This is my cue to give him a kiss, which nine times out of ten turns into a hug as he twists around and onto my lap. Works nearly every time. <sigh>

When it doesn't, he'll resort to knocking several books off the bottom shelf behind me and then pushing them under the shelf. He thinks I'll never find them in there. :rolleyes:

Generally, though, he learned when he was a puppy that when Mum is working at the pc the world does not exist, and if he can't tempt me away from my desk he'll give up and curl up on my feet.

LabRat (relieved that, so far, he hasn't gone all the way of a cat and resorted to climbing trees and having to be coaxed down - which was a favourite habit of our last labrador, Patch.)

the thing is, I love cats, but I live in an appartment and I wouldn't keep them locked in it the whole day so I prefer not to own any than make one unhappy.

Still, if you count photographs and stuffed animals...I have4 cats (2+2, one's a tiger )

Don't feel bad...both my cats sometimes act like dogs. Selena likes to chase her tail and C.C. loves to play fetch. At least she's playing it with a toy mouse, so it can't be all bad.

OK, I just voted, and I have a little complaint.

I just voted for "0 - I'm a dog lover". Not that I don't love cats, I do, but I can't have them where I'm living now, and before, my mother never liked animals in the house. I LOVE dogs, cats, hamsters, any type of pet, but I just can't have one. So, when I voted, I was voting for the zero cats, not for the "I'm a dog lover". Maybe an extra comment in the zero option should be posted: "...or can't have one".

Just my thoughts.

I love both cats and dogs. We used to have both an outdoor dog (back yard) and an outdoor cat (anywhere she wanted, but mainly front yard). At that time I liked dogs better. Our cat, Muffin, was getting old and wasn't "playful". She was older than I was and we had to have her put to sleep when I was about 13 or so. We got our golden retriever, Sunny, when I was 6 1/2. She was very playful. She passed away Christmas morning a few years ago, though.

The next year my sister got a cat, Tobey, for Christmas and she's adopted all of us as hers. It's kind of funny because when my mom and my sister and I get home, Tobey will go to my mom or to me, not to my sister.

Tobey's sister (from a different litter) lives with some neighbors, and she is one of the ugliest cats we've ever seen, while Tobey is really cute.

She loves sleeping in the exact middle of the bed and laying on your hand or arm. My computer is positioned so I can sit on my bed and use it and I have a stand next to my bed that my cordless mouse is on. For some reason, Tobey thinks that it is just her size. I am constantly having to pick her up off of my hand and mouse (where she decided to lay) and depositing her next to me on my bed. She tries to lay on my hand when I am typing too...but she's so cute that I just can't get mad at her. :rolleyes:

ok...one more story. She used to take naps on our old family computer monitor (different from my computer). We got a new computer and monitor two weeks ago...flat screen...now she sits beside the computer and meows in complaint with pitiful eyes. :p

lol. i grew up with a golden/cocker spaniel mutt. great dog, but she thought she was a cat, too. in a different way than yours. i mean, puppies are affectionate, love to get attention, and will poke and prod you until you pet them (or until they realize it's hopeless and give up and lie down at your feet). that's normal.

amber, otoh, had some odd reactions. whenever she saw a dog, she'd wag her tail and act all friendly... until that dog came within striking distance. then, all of a sudden, she was all teeth and claws. had to do whatever we could to hold her back.

otoh, the people across the street had a cat. for no reason we could fathom, amber habitually shared her dinner with the cat. mom had to start giving her extra food so that she'd get enough.

i'm intrigued by this dog of yours that could climb trees. very interesting.

of course, the thing i find most interesting in all this is the discovery that labrat owns a lab.

No kidding, eh. Mine was disloyal, growled at me and I probably lost skin at some point. I was seriously thinking about giving him away, then by the time he turned two, he was all affectionate, pet me, play with me sort of thing. He's a lab-retriever.

I have no idea why he got into the habit. But he was a real character and it was just something he seemed to have fun with. He was astonishingly good at jumping. We have a six and a half foot wall that separates our garden from a small road on the other side and the first time Patch leapt over it, after a carelessly thrown ball, we just stood and gaped.

After that he'd do it regularly if you didn't watch him. One leap and his front paws were on the top, a quick scrabble with the hindlegs and he'd be up and over. He was an adverturer, was Patch. Nothing delighted him more than skipping out and taking off for the day on some adventure or other. We learned to live with it. He'd come back 24 hours later looking extremely smug and not a little guilty, sometimes beaten about as one of his great joys was scrapping with other dogs. I suspect he was up to other things too as there were a suspicious number of dogs in the neighbourhood in later years with a distinct resemblance to our maverick.

But I digress...trees. He'd find one that had a low slung limb and jump onto it. Then work his way to the top. It wasn't unusual for my brother or I to take Patch out for a walk and then come back wearily some time later to get Dad to go fetch him down from a tree. Dad was the only one he'd listen to and come back down for. "Dad! He's up a tree again!" was a familiar cry during my teen years.

I love all animals. Seriously, I do. Insects, reptiles, furry friends, all of them. I only have 8 fish, 1 hamster, 2 dogs, and 3 cats though.

I've owned nine cats at various stages of my life, but unfortunately only one of them is still with me (two had to stay back in Cape Town with friends.)

I mostly wanted to say... cats that don't come when they're called? Good heavens! *All* my cats have come when they were called, and that includes the current one, who is a scaredy cat - his mother was feral.

And one of my cats used to come for walks, too, though she wouldn't let me leash her.
