When you open Internet Explorer, there's a bar in the bottom of the window, which tells you about the progress of the page you're opening, whether there are errors in the page etc..

I must have pressed something accidentally and now it's gone. How do I put it back on?

Try turning the "Status Bar" on in the View menu.
