Would my "Specimen S" also be eligible? I finished posting in early to mid December. It's still with my GE for posting to the archive.

Hi Tricia:

Thanks for all your hard work, so I apologize in advance for giving you more.

I know I already have 12 (gasp! [Linked Image]) stories on the list, but can you add:

Naughty!

And

The Truth about Soul Mates , which should be posting to the Archives any minute now.

To make a round 14 Stories? laugh At least one eligible for every category too, I think, (except new writer, of course). wink

Could you change my name from Virgina R. to the correct VirginiaR.? Thanks.

I'd also like to nominate the very shy ( laugh ) and bashful ( notworthy THE Deadly Chakram.

Thanks, Virginia, for spotting the errors. smile1 That happens when you copy and paste and don't check.

I have added your stories. clap However, Mrs Luthor will need to nominate her own story.

I was reviewing the stories posted on the boards in 2012 and I found some that there aren't on the list and I believe are eligible:

Mr. Kent Is Dead by Mouserocks
Time to Love 5: Led Astray by Female Hawk
Bless you, Dr. Klein by Bakasi
My Love by Anonpip
The tide by ShayneT
Worth The Risk by Sue S.
Bad Guys Always Have A Plan by Mouserocks
Go For Superman by Mouserocks
Reality Check by HappyGirl
Accused by Female Hawk
Stealing Second by Mouserocks
Come Over by Stopquitdont
Las Vegas' Kerth Ceremonies by Angelsgmaw
The Tooth of the Matter by Mouserocks
Always Darkest by Bobbart
Scientific Impossibility by Mouserocks
The Choices of Others by Chickberry
Santa’s Helper by Bobbart
Aurora Borealis by KenJ

It has to be the author to include them? And does it mean they can't be used in the quizzes? I should know this but honestly I don't remember. blush

Yes, only the author can ask for their story to be included and they can only be used in the quizzes if they're on the eligibles list.

Sigh. Now you tell me. wink It's all good though. This has given me a few fills for the last two questions I was scrambling for...

And I know. I'm surprised that any of my stories are up on that list, as I am in the bad habit of not transferring anything over to the boards except like once a year. /hangs head in shame/

So. Here I am, formally submitting my year's worth of stories. And yes, you have guilted me into cleaning everything up and sending it over to the Archive. I have scoured the harddrive. Prepare to be spammed with it all. :p

Kill Your Heroes

Timing Is Everything

Scientific Impossibility

The Tooth of the Matter

Blue Skies

Stealing Second

Bad Guys Always Have a Plan

Go for Superman

Mr. Kent Is Dead **

**I am shaky on whether or not to submit this one, because it is technically a part of- or rather an alternate take on- another story that I have in the works (thank you for reminding me!) So I figured I'd ask anyway.

The "Las Vegas' Kerth Ceremonies" is with the G.E. who changed the title to Las Vegas's Kerth Ceremonies. It should be posted by Labby in a week or so.

Thanks for including my efforts.

If it's not too late, I'd like to add Cold Lake .

What do the numbers beside the list mean? Is there a list somewhere of which categories the stories fit in?

Thanks.

The number is the k count of the story. Important for nominating a story in certain categories where the k count is part of the category itself.

Which category a story is nominated in is pretty much up to the individual. Most will be obvious and the k count in a category, where applicable, should also guide you. If a story is obviously in the wrong category when a voting form is sent in, I believe K-Comm will adjust it. And, of course, you can always mail them and ask for advice if you're really unsure.

So don't worry - it'll work out one way or the other. :-)

Burn - HappyGirl

First Love series - by KenJ

All good stories which the authors should ask have on the Kerth eligible stories list. <<hint, hint>>

Would you please add my "The Not-So-Great Escape" to the Eligible Story list? I had posted it here last month, but only today realized that I hadn't yet sent it to Labby for the archive. (I have subsequently rectified that oversight.)

Tricia,

I sent you a PM but just to follow up:

Hi Tricia,

Perhaps I am off base and a lot of my stories are not eligible, but I checked the list and a number of my stories are missing.

You should have the following, (They were all posted in 2013 although not all have hit the archive as yet and one I started posting will be finished this week.):

To be eligible, a story must have been posted somewhere online, complete, by December 31st 2012, Ken. It doesn't have to be on the Archive.

Hope that helps you work out which of your stories are eligible. thumbsup

Tricia,

I just thought of another short I posted toward the end of December - Aurora Borialis.

Not to be confused with the expanded version now being posted.

I can't believe it's that time of year again. Wow, this last one went fast! I'm doubly excited because, for the first time in about four or five years, I'm actually NOT going to be out of town over the Kerths. So I'll actually get to hang out with everyone! smile1

But, I digress. What I meant to do here was formally ask that "Worth The Risk" and "High Tide" be added to the eligibility list. They were posted here on the boards, but RL got in the way of getting them to the archive in a timely fashion. confused

My thanks to Virginia and Andreia for remembering me. smile

ETA: Tricia, I converted these to plain text documents they came out as 43K for "Worth The Risk" and 24K for "High Tide". smile

The 'stories added' list makes me somewhat sad. So many stories never submitted to the Archive last year...

It seems that each year that passes that gap gets larger. It's making me nostalgic for the days when it was a rare thing indeed for a posted story not to be submitted and when stories added to the basic Kerth list provided by the Archive numbered just the occasional extra one or two.

Couldn't it be the opposite - all the stories posted on the boards be submitted automatically to the Archive and just don't be submitted when the author requests it? It seems most stories that aren't submitted is because the authors forget to submit it. sad Just my two cents.

In some cases, it would be that the author forgets, but in other cases, it's a matter of time. If an author moves on to another story quite quickly, time taken to edit a previous story slows the progress of the new story. This is particularly true of long stories.

As for having them automatically submitted, I like to edit my stories a final time before submission, so it wouldn't work for me, but some authors might like having that as an option.

I think another factor in delaying submission is the confusion over what constitutes a sequel and what is essentially one story, although it might be written in two or more parts. My current story will have a sequel, therefore neither will get to the archive until both are finished.

We've always taken the view that it's a fundamental right of the author to decide where their story is posted. Even more so because we insist on passing them to a GE before they are uploaded to the Archive rather than allow authors to upload them direct as most other archives do.

So automatic upload would result either in editing changes being made to a story without the author's permission or abandoning the GE process before upload. Neither of which would be acceptable.

And of course there are many reasons for not submitting - but can it really be that authors today are more forgetful, busy or confused than their counterparts of a few years ago? Seems unlikely! laugh

If the Archive isn't as important to authors today then it's not an issue. But if it is still valuable then I'd simply ask that you take a moment to find the time to submit or you may find it's a lost resource. We can't exist without your support and submissions.

Which seems an opportune time to say that any of the stories above that haven't yet been submitted would be welcome now. That upload queue is looking sparse. wink

You're right, Labby. It is sad. For years that's where I did my fanfic reading and only looked at the boards for other stuff. I rarely even logged in and thus don't even remember what I called myself back then (before the split). I can't do it tonight, but I'll try to get Cold Lake to you this week!

I wouldn't want the stories to go to the archive without a GE either. While I've GE'd some stories that were absolutely or nearly perfect, I can think of a couple that were nightmares and can't imagine that anyone would have read them without them going through a GE first. (Neither story I'm thinking of was posted on this board. Or the other either, I think. So there are stories there that have never been seen here.)

I know that the answer for me not getting "Nighttime in the Daytime" into the Archive is time. There are changes I want to make for the archived story and my life is too full to get it done. I suspect other authors are that way too.
As for the discussion of Archive vs. fanfiction.net, I agree with the others. It is chaotic to find things.

Sorry, Tricia, we've got off track a bit.

LabRat - I think your statement above is pertinent.

I think the archive is extremely valuable. It is precisely because I value the archive that I'm not prepared to submit stories that could be improved with a final edit. That final edit takes much longer than a moment. I still haven't submitted 'Aussie Rules'. Going by previous stories, I estimate that my final edit will take between twenty and thirty hours. I've started a couple of times, but RL or other stories have got in the way. I want to read it all in less than a week, so I don't lose the flow.

I think all writers understand that their support is needed to maintain the archive. I appreciate your gentle prods and the way you continually bring the archive to our attention.

I don't think I've ever seen Stranger in Our Midst on anything.

Is it possible to add it to the list?

Just a thought.

I'm not part of K-Comm, Morgana, so I have no clue. I'm not sure if a story can be added after nominations have been opened, but you'd have to ask Tricia.

I think all authors understand that their support is needed to maintain the Archive.
Sadly, our experience over the last few years suggests otherwise. Which is my entire point. None of the reasons now being given for stories not turning up on the Archive are new. Authors have always cared about getting their stories just right before submitting. Real life has always been a bear. Free time has always been tight. All valid reasons and I wouldn't ever suggest they weren't.

But despite this, stories always made it to the Archive. Very few didn't. Now more don't than do each year. At present, I have almost no stories out being edited and only enough in the upload queue to stretch to the next couple of weeks. My last couple of reminders for submissions met with one story and no stories at all.

I can do no more. The only people who can change the inevitable decline is authors. If they want to.

I guess what frustrates me is that for a fandom for a show that hasn't aired in over a decade we are incredibly lucky to still have as many talented authors producing as much fanfic as we do. Many a fandom in those circumstances would have wound down to almost nothing by now. So, given that that fanfic is still being produced, it's just especially saddening to see the Archive dying on its feet when it seems so unnecessary.

Since joining this wonderful community I have been amazed at the care and professionalism of the archives.

Considering the alternative of fanfiction.com (shudder)I need to do my part in keeping this treasured resource viable.

It took over a year to find the time to get Stranger in Our Midst up to speed to be loaded onto the site. It took a long time to get it where it should be. So, going forward I have at least seven stories that are in different stages of completion. With Friends like these... is already on the boards. There are at least three short stories to follow and then a mid-length story, followed by a monster I have been trying to tame for over a year.

If it means working on these fics over a lunch break or sitting in the car outside of work early in the morning to get it done than that's what I have to do. In order to get my stories ready for submission.

Thanks for the reminder. thumbsup

LabRat - I have a suggestion - nothing new or startling - but it might help.

In my experience, a ficathon generates more authors and a spate of shortish stories.

Admittedly, by the time we organise a ficathon (and some might prefer to wait until after the Kerths), get the stories written, and get them to the archive, it's going to take a couple of months, but it might help fill the archive in-box over the northern hemisphere summer.

Perhaps we could give guidelines to participants - try to choose prompts conducive to shorter stories.

We could run it the standard way - all participants give 3 things they want and 3 they don't want and those prompts are given to another author. Or, to try something different, everyone could give 2 or 3 things they want, and prompts could be mixed up. ie every author gets 3 prompts from 3 different people.

Or we could post a set of prompts at the beginning of a two week/month period, and any author feeling inspired could write to those prompts. Perhaps these stories could be posted anonymously and we could include a 'guess the author' competition as part of the fun.

I'm willing to organise it if there is interest from others. We could call it The Archive Appreciation Ficathon.

frown Nominations have now started, so unfortunately, stories cannot be added to the eligible story list.

Here are the Kerth eligible stories, which have posted to the Archives since 1/1/2013 with their Kb count (apologies if I missed anyone on the list):

"Accused" - Female Hawk - 429Kb
"After Summer Camp -- Matchmaker Chronicles Volume 1C" -- A - KenJ - 21Kb
"First Love -- Matchmaker Chronicles Volume 1D -- 1L" - KenJ - 150Kb
"Las Vegas's Kerth Ceremonies" - Pat AKA angelsgmaw - 118Kb
"Naughty" - VirginiaR - 6Kb
"The Not-So-Great Escape" - Lynn S.M. - 7Kb
"Truth about Soul Mates" - VirginiaR - 3Kb

"Behind Every (Super) Man..." by Deadly Chakram is 26Kb (the Kb number was missing from the list).

Is there any way to figure out Kb totals for stories which don't have them, yet? So, I can figure out if they qualify for "Super Short", "Short", "Mid-length", "Relationship", or "Waffy"? I figure you don't want us to just guess while we're nominating stories, right?

EDIT: Next year can we have a category for best "Introspective Piece" because sometimes it's hard to define some of these great pieces as "stories".
