I'm going to whine. Please forgive me in advance.

Is this the preliminary list?

Will there be a list that tells us how many KB these stories are? The Kerth nomination categories (some of them, anyway) are subdivided by story size.

I've never been around for Kerth nominations or voting before so I'm not sure what your procedure is.

Will there be some sort of official form or whatever for nominating?

It's great that the stories are listed but I don't know how to find out story size, etc.

I know I'm jumping the gun, as it's only January 3rd.

Thanks.

My story, Lessons, was completed on the message boards before the end of the year. Doesn't that make it eligible?

The eligible list is usually put into a webpage with links and size. When it comes time to nominate, there will be a form that you can fill out and enter the stories. You can check out the FAQ and description of the process at http://www.kerthawards.com . smile

Nan, yes, but if it's not on the archive yet, you just need to drop them a note with a link to the story or TOC. smile

A small summary of how the eligible list works - which may head off some queries. wink

Each year, stories are submitted to the Fanfic Archive by their authors. At the end of each year, at the request of K-Comm, I send them my list of total stories uploaded to the Archive in the given year. 2008 in this case. This Archive list forms the nucleus of K-Comm's eligibles list.

It's by no means the final list - it's just a starting point, although it does usually form about 99% of the list. It simply means that they have a core list of eligible stories from the get-go and saves them time and trouble making up a list themselves. Gives them a bit of a head start.

Stories which were not submitted to the Archive in the given year (2008), but which are still eligible for inclusion in this year's Kerths are added to the list when and if their authors email K-Comm and ask for them to be included.

A good example of this is Veritas. It was not submitted to the Archive by Shayne last year and so was not included in the automatic draft Archive list given to K-Comm. It can be added to the list only if Shayne emails K-Comm and asks that it be added.

Hope that helps. smile

The policy is based on the idea that K-Com doesn't have time to scour the internet (or even the boards) for eligible stories, and then try to hunt down the authors to see if they want them included, or not. Some other fandoms do it that way, I'm told, but since we've got such a splendid archive system, this seemed a lot easier. smile

And then can you imagine the howls that would go up if K-Com missed some stories? eek These boards are great, but in past years there was a fair amount of antagonism and fractionalism, with accusations of bias being tossed about. It got very unpleasant, and K-Com was often a target. peep This way, the responsibility is on the author -- submit it to the archive and it will be eligible, this year or next, based on upload date. You want to fiddle with the elibility year, or skip the archive, just send an email. K-Com will be happy to oblige you.

The nKerths are held entirely separately by a different committee. It's more infrequent than the Kerths and bounces around the calendar a bit, so there's no set time for it.

If you go into the story summary thread in nfic and pick up Dawn's eddress or PM you can ask her when it's likely to be this year.

Hi K-comm. You've got the wrong link for "The Early Snoop Gets the Scoop" It should be this:
http://www.lcfanfic.com/stories/2008/esnoop.txt
You've got the link to "I'm getting married in the morning."

March 2nd through March 8th--Kerth committee sorts out nominations

Monday, March 9th--Final list of nominees to be posted

Saturday, March 21st--Voting opens

Monday, March 29th--Voting closes (at midnight EST)*

Ceremony on Saturday, April 4th, at a time to be determined.

Hi K-comm.
I'd like to bring your attention to the fact that March 29th is a Sunday, not a Monday. The Kerth site under Schedule is wrong.
Also Daylight Savings Time starts in the USA on March 8, so that midnight March 29 is EDT, not EST.
I understand there was much confusion last year on the deadline and some folcs missed it. It probably needs clarification this year. I posted a new thread with Time Zones in it.
regards

On the Kerth Eligible story list, Lessons has no link. I don't know if it will be on the Archive soon enough for it to matter, so the link to the TOC is Lessons

I hope someone can post it on the story list, for the convenience of those nominating.

Why is there no novel length category for the Kerths this year? We stop at Mid-length story on the ballot. This doesn't seem right. I say if you're going to have three categories devoted to length, you might as well make it four. That way, there is space in the Drama, Alt, Relationship and Overall Story for refined competition.

sueemma, there's only 5 stories over 500kb. That would pretty much mean all 5 stories would be nominated. I can't remember how many 500kb+ length stories we've had in the past, but I'm sure it's been more.

Yes, I know Lessons is on the list, but there is no active link to the story! That was what I was trying to say. The other stories on the list have links, but mine has none. The link simply puts you back to the top of the Eligible Stories list page. If that could be corrected, I'd appreciate it.

Sueemma, Karen is right. There are not enough stories eligible for this category.

The total number of stories is lower than previous years. If anything, K-Com may have to consider deleting a category, not adding one.

grrrrr... fine, be right. I'm making my way through the list to nominate and the new novels are just so good... but only 5 eh? That mean I've only got 2 more to go. So sad... not that I can complain because I've only been devouring stories and not contributing. smile
