Fanfic Challenge question.

There are many stories on the archive that are short bits and were clearly intended as short bits.

Tank a while back posted a Prologue provided challenge wherein the first scene provided the challenge.

Many of these tiny stories on the archive would be wonderful jumping off points.

BUT they belong to someone. So is there a way to encourage the author to post a follow up or allow encouraging someone else to use the story as a jumping off point? Plus if the email address provided for the story's author is no longer a good email address, is there a way to even get permission to use their story as a springboard?

Generally speaking, this fandom frowns on using another author's story/characters without their permission.

If you can't get the author's permission - i.e. they've left the fandom and aren't replying to email - then you can't post any continuation of their story on these mbs, I'm afraid.

Athos: If you'd told us what you were doing, we might have been able to plan this properly.
Aramis: Yes, sorry.
Athos: No, no, by all means, let's keep things suicidal.
