I was just reading First Night and it mentioned it was the sequel to Baby, I Hardly Knew You, but I couldn't find it on the archive. Anyone know if it was taken off, and if so, where I can find it?
I think, therefore, I get bananas.

Yes, all of ChrisH's fics were taken off the archive. I don't think they can be found, as she removed all instances off her website, too. Unless someone has it on their hard drive.

I don't know if this will help, but sometimes you can see the content of defunct websites by using the internet "Wayback Machine." If you happen to know the address of ChrisH's old site, you can use the following address to see if it was archived: Wayback Machine

And me? Why did she (or he) remove the stories?

Why did she (or he) remove the stories? Chris didn't, the Archive did. Chris was accused of plagiarism and a couple of her stories were found to contain small snippets from published novels which hadn't been credited with their source. Dialogue mostly, IIRC. This could have been put down to just oversight and Chris given the benefit of the doubt, since it was also clear that much of her work on the Archive was entirely original. However, some years before, Chris had been found to have plagiarised some stories from a couple of FoLC authors and had admitted the fact. (A fact that wasn't known to most of us until the later accusation came to light.) Given the circumstances, the Archive felt that it had to be safer than sorry and since we couldn't be sure that everything on the Archive was original and not plagiarised work, we removed the stories. I've always thought it was an especially sad case, because I think Chris had genuinely repented her earlier plagiarism and when she was writing original work she was an enormously talented author, who had no need to steal from anyone else. Ah, yes, I should have recognized the name, Labby. I remember a bit about the issue with the novel.

You don't have to answer this, LabRat, but I was wondering, are there many authors that you have to remove their stories, or very few? No names, of course.

As far as I recall, that was the only incident where we had to remove anything. LabRat

This is probably going off topic, but are there many authors who remove their own?

A few. Two authors requested I take their stories off the S5/S6 site, and I believe they asked the archive to take them down, too. One wanted to be a professional writer & recycle some plot elements, so didn't want a web version hanging around. I forget the other's reasoning. I tried talking both of them out of it, but to no avail.
It's really rare, AFAIK.

Yes, we've had a few people remove their stories over the years. It would be a lot more, actually, but the main reason someone asks for removal is that they've moved on, left the fandom, or are seeking employment or worry that friends and family might Google their name. In those circumstances, we always suggest that rather than remove their stories they change the author name to an anonymous nick and in the majority of cases they agree to that instead. LabRat

I would like a chance to read it too. I remember seeing it a few years back I'm pretty sure I had read it. Please email me at peitronizme@gmail.com (I haven't cleared the one I use for this MB I assume it's really full).
I remember one titled Ten (I think) about Lois' high school reunion, but it was taken off later anyone else have a copy of that one? I can't remember who it was by.

It's been ages since I scrolled through First Night [and I would probably cringe if I did - first real fic and all], and I don't have the original "Baby, I Hardly Knew You" on the hard drive anymore. That being said, IIRC I used virtually all of BIHKY and then changed a few things to make it work better for what I had in mind [with Chris H's permission] so while it's the premise for FN, it's not strictly necessary to read for First Night. BIHKY was not one of the fics suspected of being plagiarized so there was no issue there. And all of that to also say wow - can't believe people are still reading it . Carol

I remember one titled Ten (I think) about Lois' high school reunion, but it was taken off later anyone else have a copy of that one? I can't remember who it was by. LOL! I have this one printed, iirc! Back in the day when I printed just about everything. I'll have a look for it, and if it's not too long (which I don't recall it being), I'll type it up and email. ETA: MWHAHAHAHA! My packrat tendencies have finally been justified!! "Don't throw it out, because you *might* need it someday!" Well, that day has come! *cough* Okay... so I'm being a little melodramatic about it, but I found the fic. *g* (The search was quick because it was in my "favorites" box." ) "Ten" by Marcelle, it looks like. It has an email address I wonder if we should try first. Does anyone know why she had it taken off the archive? Either way, it's not that long, so I can type it up, though it might be a bit before I get to it. Sara

"Ten" by Marcelle, it looks like. It has an email address I wonder if we should try first. Does anyone know why she had it taken off the archive? No clue. I don't remember it at all. The most likely reason is the one I mentioned previously - she had second thoughts about her name being out there in cyberspace, it was suggested to her that an anon nick would solve the problem, but she insisted she'd prefer to have it removed altogether. Or, second most likely reason and one where the anon nick doesn't work - she had revisited the story in later years, thought it was below par and was embarrassed to have it still there. LabRat

I think it's ashamed that folks would remove their stuff from the archive, but oh, well, what are you going to do? I tried to talk one person into putting her stuff back up, but it was to no avail.
