Okay, I'm curious. What does WHAM and WAFF actually stand for?

From the forum\'s FAQ (so kindly created by MeredithK):

Quote
WAFF Warm And Fuzzy Feeling The feeling you get from a particularly touching moment in a fic. Adjective is WAFFy.
WHAM Wistful, Heartwrenching, Agonizing Moment When something Really Bad happens in a fic. Often the subject of warnings in an author's note, for readers who wish to avoid such material.

When in doubt, think about penguins. It probably won't help, but at least it'll be fun.

Thanks Paul. I must have forgotten that the exact meaning was in the FAQ's.

Heh! You learn something every day...

I'd been under the impression that WHAM was literally that... kind of like getting struck by a train at 120MPH in a field of daisies, or some such. Totally unexpected.

...Is it possible to have a WAFFy WHAM?

Mmm cheese.

I vid, therefor I am.

The hardest lesson is that love can be so fair to some, and so cruel to others. Even those who would be gods.

I'm not sure what you mean. A story that is cute with agonizing moments or an agonizing moment that is somehow cute? The first is definitely possible, the second I'm not so sure. Maybe some ironic situation like some revelation fics where it's "agonizing" but heartwarming that Lois should declare her love for Superman to Clark or vice versa. That's about all that ocurrs to me at the moment.

I think many hurt/comfort stories could be considered 'WAFFy WHAMs". Something bad happens (usually to Clark, LOL) and Lois comforts him, which brings them together ... very satisfying. smile
