What sound does a baseball make when you catch it?

I'm thinking 'thwap', similar to thwack, but not quite...

To me, it kind of sounds like a smack. But it kind of depends on how hard it's thrown. If it isn't thrown very hard, it doesn't really make a sound.

I don't know. I'm thinking more of a 'thnk' than a 'thwap' for the baseball. I think if you took off your baseball cap and, holding the viser, smacked it against the wall to get the dirt out you'd get more of a 'thwap'.

(btw, this is my kind of conversation. Thanks for making my morning. laugh After all, I'm sick and it's snowing outside razz )

I'd have to go with Laura and say "smack." I've heard MLB announcers describe it that way, but it would depend on how hard the ball was thrown.

See, I hear it as more of a slap. So I'm really good with any -ap ending.

Thwap totally works for me. Something that sounds like the sting of your hand.

As for the baseball cap against the wall, *that's* a thwack, especially if it's really dirty.

CC- who, also, finds this conversation right up her alley.

Ah, I should have been more specific with the throw, silly me wink

Imagine, if you will, someone lying down, tossing the ball above their heads and catching it, the ball impacting with their bare palm, leather versus skin... THWAP? SMACK? THNK? SLAP?

I've tried it myself, but the closest thing I have to a baseball in the house anymore is a cricket ball, and... it's just not the same, ya know?

Well, that changes everything, David! You might have mentioned that first time round. wink

Ok, bare-handed, tossing, lying down... I'll have to go with ML's thnk. Most definitely not a slap or variant thereof.

Also, this might be my favorite thread ever.

Listen, David, if you don't mind, I think I'm going to borrow your 'thwap' for the sound a helicopter's blades make when it's flying. I need the sound for in my latest story and thwap really seems to work for me.

'thwap, thwap, thwap, thwap, thwap, thwap, thwap'

See what I mean? Don't you just get that helicopter feeling? laugh

Btw, CC, I think you're right about the hitting the baseball cap against the wall sound. It is more of a 'thwack' than a 'thwap' blush . Thanks for catching that laugh

Thwap, slap, smack...any of those sound good.
