EDIT - Hello. I hope this can be a spot where Folcs can post their FDK about older fic that may not have a folder here, or if you cannot dig it out! Hope it is useful Dec 08/04 - EDIT

Hi y'all. I have a question. I've been reading a lot of the fic that is in the archives. I was wondering if it would be considered a faux pas or just a waste of space if I do a comment folder or a FDK on it. If yes, in the Fanfic folder? I want to bring fanfic out and maybe get the newbies interested. I'm not a newbie, but I'm not a ....senior.. LOL. I know when people bring up "I'm trying to find a fic" it helps me find stuff I find interesting.

I wouldn't comment on EVERY one I did. Just ones that would make me go....WOW or that point really brought out a strong feeling in me.

Thx
Bye
Roo

Hi Roo smile

First, authors love to get feedback, no matter how old the fic. wink So no problem there! I see your point about advertising stories you loved to other newbies, though, which is a great idea. thumbsup But if it's a story you read on the Archive, the fanfic folder isn't really the most appropriate.

However... why not use this folder? Someone - I think it was Sara - started a thread some weeks ago entitled 'feedback I always meant to send' - you could use that. Or you could start a thread and call it something like 'getting to know older fics?' and invite others to post about older stories they might have just read recently.

That is a great idea! Thanks for the feedback! I didn't know what to do b/c to me this is still a new board and I didn't know what to do. I'm used to boards that have been around for ages as I'm sure some of you are used to.

Gee, can I repeat myself anymore?! I didn't know what to do.....there I got it out of my system.

I also think this is a great idea! I just recently read a fabulous story that was posted almost three years ago. I'm ashamed to admit I just barely got to it. blush But I loved it, and emailed the author to tell her so.

Anyway, my point is, authors LOVE feedback, and they always love it when someone enjoys a story enough to publicly recommend it to others. I think it's a great idea to help the slightly new message board members know which fics to start with. smile

Also, just an aside--I recently got an email from someone telling me she'd just read and enjoyed a fanfic of mine that I'd written ages ago. She completely made my week! I think that other authors would probably feel the same way I did--that feedback from someone on an older story was even better than feedback on a recent story because it made me feel like a work I'd done way back when was still being read and appreciated. thumbsup

So, YES! Comment on those older stories! Let others know what you enjoyed and recommend. It's a win-win situation, IMO. wink

First off, I agree with Wendy and Erin. It's never too late to give FDK!

The idea of posting it publically, as a recomendation to newer readers, is very good, too.

The thing I wanted to mention was that not all authors check the MBs. So, if you are going to post here with public FDK, you might want to email the author privately, as well. You can say how much you liked the story, and, if you want, give a link to the FDK thread.

I know of one occasion when something like that happened. Someone started an FDK thread for a story on the archive, to reccomend it to other readers. People read it, and started commenting even more. The author, meanwhile, didn't know the MBs even existed until a few FoLCs emailed with links to the thread.

So, out of that one initial FDK post, a bunch of readers got to see a very cool story, a writer got even more FDK, and the boards got a new member! cool

That is exactly what happened to me, too! Or...wait...were you talking about me, Paul? Maybe that's a common experience, come to think of it. For me, though, it made all the difference.

I think it was Trenna who started a feedback thread on a story I sent to the archive. I didn't even realize these boards existed. Pam sent me the link. Liz emailed me and told me what a friendly community this was. I got brave enough to tip-toe in and have a look, and it just. blew. my. mind.

I spent an afternoon sweating and fretting over how to reply, if I should reply, what the heck I would say, etc... Really labored over that initial post more than over the story that prompted it.

Point being, feedback is invaluable to the author, no matter the timing. It certainly was for me.

And once I overcame my initial shyness, 700+ posts later, you couldn't drag me away.

Thanks guys. I tried to do some FDK in the past but it felt so empty. I think I folder would be cool and thx for the idea of e-mail the author's. I was always a little shy on that.

Do you think this is okay?

- Gettin' to know older fics
put in the fanfic related section

- Gettin'to know older nfics
put it in the nfic section

Appreciate the suggestion for the folder's name smile

Like me!

Wow, what a great idea, Roo! See, I have the same problem, not only because I'm a LnCfic newbie, but also because I tend to only read the TOC fics since they're guaranteed to be done. I used to read all my fics on FF.net (I read other fics before I finally got to LnC), and some writers would just stop mid-story or not update for months at a time! So I kinda have this fear-of-unfinished-fics complex, which is why I only read the finished ones. Up until now, I would only e-mail the writers directly to give them fdk, but this is an awesome idea!

And the folder names sound fine to me! thumbsup

Mirage, do you know about the Fanfic Archive ? If you don't, get over there now! All stories are finished - they don't get on the archive unless they are - and there's over 2000 of them. Lots of hours of wonderful reading! laugh

Oo, Wendy, I just LOVE the archive! But I've been having some issues with it, please take a look here.

By the way, I don't know if I've told you before, but - I'm a HUGE fan! lol I first found your stories on FF.net, which led me to here and to Annette's site, so really, your stories started it all for me and they're still some of my all-time favourites!

But I think I'm getting off-topic here, so! Yes, I'm glad Roo's starting this new fdk folder, because I've just been drowning myself in old fics when I'm not doing assignments. And I think some of the writers don't get my e-mails sometimes, so this is a good way to make sure that they (or at least, mbs member writers) get my fdk!

Bye all, and keep writing, Wendy!

It also occurs to me that sometimes the e-mail address may not be current on the older fics on the Archive. LabRat can't update them if no one tells her.
So anyway, yes feedback on older fics would be a great idea. A lot of that was written while the show was still on and may have details we've (or at least I've) forgotten.
While we are on the topic, hats off to whoever organized the page with all of Nan Smith's stories in order and by series. I was getting lost!!!
If the feedback is in Fanfic Related, does it really need a special title like FDK: Old story?. Just use FDK: Story Name by Author. In the first line you can say "I found this neat story from 1995 by Author called Story Name on the Archive and I liked it so much I wanted to share my thoughts." Then others may go to the Archive and read and come back and add to the thread.
Just thoughts.

Ugh. I cannot find the folder that I made. I know I made one a while ago but I cannot find it. I thought I put it in this folder. I guess I didn't. I feel really silly! I guess I'll search again.

EDIT - I give up. I can only find the nfic one I made. I must have messed up some how. I've been having tonnes of trouble with both of my computers. I can't even do school work on them. No word, excel, my internet access has porn invading it all the time. I've got to find time to fix it again. So far the 'small' things haven't. I guess I have to .... sniffle .... reformat. Ugh. There goes the weekend.

EDIT - I remember why! Here is something already in motion.

Mirage, I saw this when you posted and kept meaning to come back to say thank you - and then forgot. sad Thank you so very much! blush I'm so pleased that you like my stories, and I'm delighted that you made it here and to the archives.

Welcome!!

I just finished "Four Days to Nightfall" by Nan.

WOW. I really enjoyed the totally new angle, to me anyways, about that event.

Some of my favourite parts involved Lois seeing Charlie in a favourable new light, hehe.

I felt the frustration that Lois and Charlie experienced over Charlie's memory loss. I enjoy movies, stories where the Earth or society is faced by something as grave as Nightfall. I like to read/see how society acts. The description of a quiet Metropolis in the eve of Nightfall, faced with a major black out. That sent shivers up my spine.

I remember one part brought tears to my eyes. I wish I remembered what part! It was for a good reason, not because what I was reading was painfully bad! LOL.

Though, if I was Charlie and I had my Mum on the phone, no offense to Lois, I'd want to know my name! Though, the suspense of when Lois would find out his name was great and the "aww" part of him wanting to know if he was married was so cute - even though he didn't get to ask. It was on his mind even before his fist name!

Maybe I read it incorrectly.

It was ashame to see it end but I realize it is not a play by play of their life forever. It was a story and ended in a great place. I loved Lois' tenacity and Clark just being Clark.

I did get worried for Lois driving home on her own after Charlie (now remember himself as Clark) took of to 'move' Nightfall. I'm glad she made it home safley.

This earns five double crunch fudge bars out of five.
*thumbs up from this end of the Earth and thanks for your hard work*

Oh, yes, "Four Days to Nightfall" is an awesome story thumbsup I'm incredibly impressed that Nan managed to have Lois and Charlie find and control all his powers in only a few days.

And the good news is, there are three sequels! smile

There is a series guide for Nan that keeps track of all her, well, series smile She writes great stuff, but it can get confusing...

"You told me you weren't like other men," she said, shaking her head at him when the storm of laughter had passed.
He grinned at her - a goofy, Clark Kent kind of a grin. "I have a gift for understatement."
"You can say that again," she told him.
"I have a...."
"Oh, shut up."

How did I miss this thread?

Thanks for the feedback on FDTN and the Dagger series. I'm always thrilled when someone sends me feedback on some of my earlier work.

And yes, Jose, I have every intention of continuing the Dagger series -- and the Nightfall series, and the Wedding series and all the others. laugh I've had to slow down on them a little, because I'm babysitting my youngest grandson 4 to 5 days a week and he's just starting to haul himself up on everything, so he's keeping me on my toes and away from my computer more than I like, but when I can, I'm writing as much as I can squeeze in. I'm working on Home V: Obsession at the moment (I've managed to get three and a half pages done of the next part so far) and I'm working on my first alt-Clark story which is (surprise) a Christmas fic that I'd like to get done in time for Christmas. Fortunately, it's going to be short (I hope). goofy

Anyway, this thread is a great idea. I'll try to use it to send feedback about my favorite older fics as soon as I can spare a few minutes to make up a list. (No, come to think of it, that might take forever. Soon, anyway).

Nan! I've been reading many of your stories lately. I just finished... Mystery last night. I have to reread it b/c I missed the part where Clark tells Lois of his feelings. Lois mentioned that he loves her and I was like "what?!" LOL.

I enjoyed the premise and the introduction of new characters in a different setting. I enjoy this genra of LnC.

I was spooked when they were stuck in the mine. I felt like I was stuck in there too.

Well I found 'book 2' and I was like yesss!!! and then nooo!!! b/c I had to go to bed. Since it looks like it will be a snow day I shall read it later today.

Thanks!!!!

EDIT - I think I figured out why I was confused (above). I think I got it mixed up with a new fic that is being posted at the moment. *blush*

It is still an awesome!!!!!! Now I know what is fab!
