I've said this somewhere earlier, but it's been a couple of years since I have actually seen any episodes of Lois and Clark (TNAOS) and I've forgotten most of the logistics of Metropolis. I've gleaned some info from the stories I've read, but I haven't found this info anywhere that's solid and I want my next story to sound logical not just stuff I came up with on the fly. I'm actually doing research and crap.
So here's the question,...is gambling legal in Metropolis and what's the most popular place to go if it is? Also, who at the Daily Planet does the Sports page, articles, ...
You guys can pass the info on via Bulletin Board or you can Email me directly. I think my email is listed in my profile.
Anyway thanks in advance

I don't have the direct answers but...

1. I think you can get the sports person's name from Requiem for a Superhero, when Perry assigns Lois the fight night story.

2. Gambling, I think watching Lois and Clark's reactions at seeing some bigwigs at Georgie Hairdo's club in That Old Gang of Mine suggests, that it may not be entirely on the up and up confused

If she had to move heaven and Earth, perhaps come back to haunt Perry and explain the story after they'd killed her, she would do it.

not sure, but i think gambling was illegal in metropolis. the club was illegal, which was the sort of thing that al capone was known for.

gambling isn't legal in many places in the US. nevada and a small part of NJ (not sure exactly how atlantic city works, but i don't think gambling is legal elsewhere in the state).

otoh, there are ways around that. in NYC (which metropolis is modled after), gambling is not leagal, but they have gambling cruises. people get on this casino boat and float out into international waters (just a few miles off the coast).

i think they do something similar floating down the mississippi river, just on the state line or something like that. not sure. don't remember that part so clearly.

hope this helps.

Actually, a lot of the states I've lived in have had gambling in some form or another so long as they are supported by an Indian reservation. In Arizona they've got 3 major casinos just outside of Phoenix city limits and here in Minnesota they've got the Mille Lacs Grand and Treasure Island, both supported by Ojibwe(Chippawa) I believe. I just want to use a slot machine in my most recent story line, but I don't want to sound too far fetched.

ah, yes. reservations. those are another exception. the trick there is that reservations aren't technically part of the US. they're isolated areas governed by the native americans who live there. they get to make their own laws, do their own policing, etc. so, if they choose, they can make gambling legal. it allows them to make money, but i always feel kind of sad about it. then again, considering history, it's a small thing...

anyway, odds are gambling is illegal in metropolis, but you could probably arrange something if you really wanted to. maybe they passed a law on a trial basis to allow a few slot machines and such?

just note that places where gambling is legal in this country become *known* for it. vegas, atlantic city, foxwoods reservation... you hear those names, you think of gambling first.

oh, one other thing... there's another work-around. tokens. if you make the slot machines run on tokens, and make the tokens redeemable for prizes instead of cash, it's then considered a game and not actually gambling. there's an amusement park near us that used to do things that way. i think the law changed since then, but i'm not sure. besides, l&c was in the 90's.
