The darker iteration is that Superman sees bad stuff happen every day; it's not a far stretch to say something made him crack. We know he's mentally susceptible to the same things as humans. Who knows what could push him over the edge? I just had a mental flash of the series finale for M*A*S*H - hmmmm...
