This exchange from Smart Kids makes me cringe, especially since Lois says her line in such a snarky tone:


Mrs. Valdes? She gave the child up for adoption. She has no rights.

Lois: Just because she doesn't currently have custody doesn't mean she has no rights.

Actually, if she gave the child up for adoption, then that is precisely what it does mean. When parents sign away their rights, the judge gives them a big speech about how, in the eyes of the law, the child is no longer related to them at all. They really want the parent to think twice before they take such a step. And in any case, even if it was a temporary loss of custody, it still means that the parent has no right to say whom the child can live with. Cringe, cringe, cringe!
