Actually, the story you're describing, Rat, is one which is no longer available - the final instalment in ChrisH's altClark series,
Brave New World. In that story, the Clark of Lois's universe is dead. HG Wells sends AltClark, who hasn't been Clark for years, there with the task of finding Clark Kent. All they find is his body (Bernie Klein, who was involved in the plot that led to his death, helps them), but it turns out that Wells' real intention is for Superman to find
himself.
