there's no actual proof either way. the show never really mentioned it except in vague terms.
but there was some implication that because of their soulmate bond, they can feel each other's presence.
there's also a tradition that clark (sometimes subconciously) monitors the sound of lois's distinct heartbeat.
both explanations have been used a fair ammount by fic writers, but both have also been ignored or dismissed by other writers.
basically, if you want him to feel it, he can. if you don't want him to feel it, he doesn't have to. just make sure you're consistent within your own story.
