CLARK'S APARTMENT (CONTINUOUS) - NIGHT 6 Clark hands the newspaper back to Wells: CLARK How'd you find out about this... curse? WELLS Initially, with this. Wells reveals a Walkman-sized, titanium encased Device, which has, at its center, a shifting pool of liquid crystal. A row of ICONS underneath are the only controls. CLARK What is it? WELLS In it's own way, it's a time (X) machine, although, in actuality, (X) it's much more than that. I came (X) across it upon my future travels, to a time quite unlike anything I'd ever dreamed of. There, I met a (X) fellow inventor who discovered a (X) way to identify the energies emitted by... souls. LOIS Excuse me...? WELLS (filled with excitement) You see, every soul has an energy field unique unto itself -- a cosmic fingerprint, if you will. No two exactly alike. This Device was created as a means to track that energy. Or, to be more precise, _back_track it. LOIS Wait a minute, are we talking past lives here? What's it got to do with this curse? WELLS That's how I found out about it. I used the Device to track your soul back through time. CLARK My soul? Why mine? WELLS I simply chose the most powerful personality I knew -- Superman's, and discovered something quite remarkable along the way. It seems that your soul is intertwined with _hers_, like soul mates. LOIS Soul mates? WELLS Wherever his was, there was yours, never one without the other. Two lovers destined to meet and fall in love over and over again throughout Time. Truly a mythic bond. Lois and Clark share an intimate look. WELLS (CONT'D) That's the good news. The bad (X) news is that unless you return to the time of the curse and stop (X) it from being cast, tragedy will (X) strike you down in every lifetime, (X) every time you consummate. (X) (shudders) (X) It's usually very painful, too, (X) believe me. LOIS Why does this stuff keep happening to us? CLARK I don't know, but it might explain why stuff _does_ keep happening to us. MARTA Neither has Lady Loisette. She keeps asking me strange questions, like how long have we known Sir Charles, and can she have a napkin. JON What's a napkin? MARTA My point exactly. 21 EXT. POND - NIGHT 21 Moonlit, romantic, as Clark catches up to a calmer Lois who's looking up at the sky. CLARK/SIR CHARLES Hey... LOIS/LADY LOISETTE Do you ever wonder if our relationship's... jinxed, Clark? Not just here, everywhere. CLARK/SIR CHARLES What do you mean? LOIS/LADY LOISETTE I mean jinxed... like it's not meant to be. Just look at everything we've had to overcome. (X) CLARK/SIR CHARLES Lois... LOIS/LADY LOISETTE No, I'm serious, Clark. Maybe we're missing the obvious here. Maybe it's time we stopped pretending, started looking at the writing on the wall. It just seems like every time we turn around, every time we try to take the next step, something's in our way trying to keep us from getting there. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "SOUL MATES" (#4) Yellow Rev. 8/27/96 25. 21 CONTINUED: 21 She turns away, pained by the very thought. CLARK/SIR CHARLES I don't know... When you add it all up like that, it's a lot. But, maybe, that's the point. Maybe what it really is, is a test... to see how badly we want to be together. Maybe it's up to us to decide of t's meant to be or not. (X) LOIS/LADY LOISETTE (fishing) What do you think? CLARK/SIR CHARLES I think there's a reason why we're soul mates. A very, very good reason. He wraps his arms around her. She lays her head on his chest, notices: 22 THE NIGHT SKY 22 as a SHOOTING STAR streaks across. 23 RESUME LOIS AND CLARK 23 as they both watch it. LOIS/LADY LOISETTE I've always loved shooting stars. I suppose that's one of the reasons I love you. You came in on one. CLARK/SIR CHARLES Or at least I will, in about a thousand years, or so. Then we get to meet and fall in love all over again. They fall into a tender kiss. WELLS (clears his throat) Forgive me for interrupting... LOIS/LADY LOISETTE Are you kidding? We could set our clocks by it. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "SOUL MATES" (#4) Yellow Rev. 8/27/96 26. 23 CONTINUED: 23 WELLS Sorry, but time is of the essence and I think I might have an idea. What would happen if we could find a way to get The Fox to duel Baron Tempos, himself -- and _lose_ to him? LOIS/LADY LOISETTE It'd keep the curse from being cast, I guess. WELLS Then you could return to your honeymoon. CLARK/SIR CHARLES Yeah, but we'd be leaving The Fox to spend the rest of his life at Tempos's mercy. WELLS Isn't that preferable to the alternative -- him having to endure the first in a never-ending string of tragedies? CLARK/SIR CHARLES Well, what about Lady Loisette? We can't just let her get stuck with Tempos. LOIS/LADY LOISETTE If I know her, and I think I do, she can handle him. CLARK/SIR CHARLES Yeah, but -- Lois strokes his cheek, interrupting him. LOIS/LADY LOISETTE Clark, I want to get home now... (X) (suggestively runs her hand down his chest) ... I want to turn on some soft music, open that bottle of champagne and finish what we started in the twentieth century. Okay? Foreplay's nice, but this is ridiculous. CLARK/SIR CHARLES (beat) I'll need my green tights. --page break-- "SOUL MATES" (#4) Green Rev. 8/29/96 27. 24 EXT. TRAIL - DAY #2 24 where Clark (dressed as The Fox) is perched up high on an overhanging branch. Clark hops to his feet, hand on his hips. CLARK/THE FOX Heard you were looking for me, Tempos. The soldiers turn and charge Clark. CLARK/THE FOX (CONT'D) Careful, you wouldn't want to make a martyr out of me, would you? Tempos holds up a hand to stop them, then gets to his feet. BARON TEMPOS Search the area for Lady Loisette! You're The Fox? I _love_ it! Baron Tempos slowly rises, stunned at this revelation. BARON TEMPOS Of course... It all makes perfect sense. Never in the same place at the same time. Always ducking out and returning with some lame excuse. I can't believe I was actually fooled by a little mask over the eyes. LOIS/LADY LOISETTE Duh! Join the club! With that, Lois wrenches free and dashes to Clark's side. The Soldier starts after her -- BARON TEMPOS No, leave her be. Sir Charles is right, this fight to the death is between him and me! CLARK/SIR CHARLES (to Wells) What would happen to me, I mean _Clark_, if Sir Charles, you know... ? WELLS I'm not sure. Although, souls never die, so it really shouldn't affect... Clark. BARON TEMPOS (removing his gloves) (X) Is there a more noble way to die than to die for love, Sir Charles? Decision time. Lois and Clark hold an intimate look. CLARK/SIR CHARLES I don't want to die... But if that's what it takes for us to be together... that's easy. He smothers her protest with a kiss, then turns to meet the challenge. (X) Jeremy retrieves Clark's sword and tosses it to him. Clark (X) exchanges a heartfelt look with him. It's cut short by (X) Tempos, who LUNGES with his saber. Clark parries the (X) attack and then they begin to FENCE like something right (X) out of "The Adventures of Robin Hood." After a series of intense exchanges, Tempos manages to GRAZE Clark's chest, (X) drawing blood. (X) LOIS/LADY LOISETTE Clark! Lois instinctively moves to him, but Wells catches her arm as Clark, wincing from the pain, quickly recovers. He and (X) Tempos circle each other, jockeying for position. (X) BARON TEMPOS This is great drama. Why, I'll (X) bet some day, somebody'll write a (X) story about this, and it'll be enjoyed by millions! Tempos LUNGES again, but Clark's ready for him. Adrenalin (X) pumping, he overtakes Tempos in a furious barrage, knocking (X) him to the ground. But instead of going for the kill, Clark turns to look at Lois, _intentionally_ allowing Tempos time to regain his feet and go back on the attack. LOIS/LADY LOISETTE The one thing you can't force -- my fidelity. CLARK/SIR CHARLES Lois, you can't -- BARON TEMPOS I accept. On one condition, non-negotiable. Sir Charles is to leave this country, never to return. Not that I don't trust you, m'lady, but why tempt temptation? Clark starts to protest, but: LOIS/LADY LOISETTE He accepts. CLARK Look, you said if we reversed the curse, we'd be able to consummate our marriage. Well, we reversed it, didn't we? WELLS By changing history, yes. LOIS But, we didn't have a choice. That was the only way to stop the curse. WELLS History's held in delicate balance, with infinite consequences to even the most remote or seemingly insignificant change. It's quite possible that in allowing Baron Tempos to defeat The Fox, we unwittingly allowed Evil to defeat Good in a place and time it had not done so before. That, over Time, may very well have shifted the balance of power in favor of Evil. CLARK Which explains why Tempus is a (X) king now. (X) WELLS I'm afraid so.
