MOTHER SHIP - WITH PROCESSIONAL - TRACKING 23 Kryptonian MUSIC plays, Courtiers lead the way carrying smoking incense burners, followed by the Trey and Jen Mai, followed by a nervous Clark and resigned Zara. Trey carries an ornate ceremonial wine cup. Other Courtiers watch them pass with joy and awe. One of Clark and Zara's hands are bound to each other with a gold rope. The procession reaches large double doors and stops. Trey humbly offers (X) the wedding cup to the couple. (X) TREY I declare this union complete, its (X) consummation sanctioned by the (X) law! As (X) Clark and Zara exchange a nervous glance, we... (X) CUT TO: 24 EXT. SMALLVILLE - NIGHT #2 24 A CLOCK strikes midnight. The streets are empty. The heads and shoulders of two black-clad figures rise up into FRAME, back to CAMERA, looking around. They now look toward each other and smile sinister smiles. These are RAN and DRULL, two cruel, athletically-built Kryptonian men. RAN This is the village where both Kal El and the assassin Tez first landed on Earth. DRULL It's certainly less barren than home. 25 DRULL 25 He feels the trees, touches a leaf. DRULL Our Master's convinced that hoards from New Krypton will follow him here. (poking a bush) Are fluffy leafy items enough to lure them? RAN (O.S.) Oh, let me see... He floats horizontally into FRAME, hands behind his head. RAN (CONT'D) There may be other incentives. Drull grins, gives his arms a slight upward movement and floats up to join Ran, almost giggling. As they float: DRULL Where _is_ everyone? That fact never appeared in my briefing manual. CLARK That's not what I meant... ZARA (nervously rattling on) There are techniques to help couples. Your cable TV shows are most informative. CLARK If you were Lois, I'd know exactly what to do. It'd be natural. But this whole thing... you and me together... We're not a couple. We're a political solution. ZARA Your heart isn't in this. CLARK My heart? My heart is waiting for me on Earth. Lois is my heart. I was an outsider there; incomplete, until I met her. A beat as Zara watches him, realizing, then softly smiles. Just before they step in, Zara remembers and links her arm through Clark's. Clark is surprised but covers. Ching also notices and winces. As Clark and Zara enter, all attendants, Guards, and Ching fall on their faces in a kowtow. Jen Mai and Trey bow low. (X) CLARK Uh... look... From now on, you don't have to do this ... ZARA (under her breath) It is tradition! CLARK I know, I'm sorry, but it's driving me crazy. (to the room) Up ... everyone up. Thanks. The courtiers all slowly stand, looking uneasy. TREY Lords of Krypton, already in our homeland the joyous news is spreading of the union of Kal El and Zara. From this coupling will spring a long line of just and brave rulers. (to himself) I hope. A Messenger has approached Trey with some urgency. He turns to deal with him as Clark spots Ching standing stiffly nearby and goes to him. --page break-- "LORD OF THE FLYS" (#1) FULL Blue Rev. 7/15/96 17. 31 CLARK AND CHING 31 CHING (stiffly) I don't believe I've said congratulations, Lord Kal El. Congratulations. He glances off at Zara. They look longingly at one another. CLARK Ching, I think you should know something... CHING (cutting him off) I understand, Kal El. We're all prisoners of duty. I know. It's how ardently we embrace our duty that concerns me. Trey suddenly turns away from the Messenger. TREY Disturbing news. It appears Lord Nor and a party of his followers have vanished from New Krypton. CLARK No one knows where they went? TREY It's believed they're on their way toward ... Earth. ON Clark's stunned reaction, we ... CUT TO: 32 EXT. SMALLVILLE - JONATHAN AND MARTHA - TRACKING - DAY #3 32(X) People are bustling about as JONATHAN, peers in a grocery bag MARTHA is carrying as they move down the sidewalk. She seems very energized. JONATHAN 'Ho-Hos,' 'Ding-Dongs,' 'Twinkees,' 'Snickers ... ' (stares up at her, bewildered) Uh... Feeling hungry? MARTHA (too cheerfully) Jonathan, you know I never eat that stuff. We've talked about this... And you know, there is a small chance Clark might not... She stops and looks at him evenly. MARTHA I know we talked about it, and what did I say then? Suddenly the VOICE OF LORD NOR fills the air, and the Kents stop, staring around as: NOR (V.O.) Villagers of Smallville. Forgive me for interrupting your tedious lives; it can't be helped. 33 FULL SHOT - SMALLVILLE - DAY 33 Traffic has stopped, people lean out of cars. Merchants emerge from stores, Cops and citizens stare around, stunned. NOR (V.O.) A change in leadership has occurred, so report immediately to your municipal headquarters for details of this joyful news, along with work and dwelling assignments. For a moment there is a general paralysis, before confusion and chaos set in. Cops jump from Police cars to (X) re-establish order. As the Cops near the Town Hall, Ran (X) and Drull BLUR to a stop before them. The Kryptonians blast the cops with SUPER BREATH and the Cops fly backward, flipping over benches and flying into bushes. RAN Yield to the Forces of Nor! Terrified, the Townspeople move toward the steps of the Town Hall as a large silvery cylinder MATERIALIZES behind Ran and Drull. Ran and Drull part, bowing low, as the cylinder VANISHES and a figure in black stands, back to all. He slowly turns and we behold the magnificent, decadent, gleefully evil --- LORD NOR. He is dressed in black, but there are swashbuckling touches... Gloves, a cuff to the boot, the crest of Nor emblazoned on his chest. A MURMUR from the awed Townspeople, and: NOR Well. Isn't this an awkward moment. Let me attempt to smooth things over. Friends, do not, I beg you, think of me as some alien being, some creature who shares nothing with you. Rather think of me as a... god. Stern, unforgiving, and invincible. I neither like you, nor need you. Resist me and die. (pleasantly; pulling off gloves) Well, now that the ice is broken, my men will sort you according to strength, age and health. More Kryptonian thugs emerge from either side of the Town Hall, and as Nor strides off, they join Ran and Drull in separating the people. 34 MARTHA AND JONATHAN 34 Martha slams her groceries into Jonathan's arms and makes a dash for a phone booth. SMALLVILLE - TWO CAROUSING KRYPTONIANS - NIGHT #4 81(X) The two burst laughing from a liquor store, casually (X) flinging two Smallville Citizens into a wall, taking CAMERA (X) to two other boisterous Kryptonians who've just finished (X) tossing something into the air. It comes CRASHING down into FRAME. It's a car. 92 TOWN SQUARE 82 Townspeople lie sleeping, lit by bonfires and Kryptonian searchlights that sweep the square. The lights of the town are out. 83 STEPS OF TOWN HALL - NOR AND RAN 83 Partying Kryptonians wander by, laughing, and Ran eyes them (X) disgustedly. Nor carries a golf club with swagger. RAN Look at them. A lifetime of Kryptonian discipline forgotten. NOR Don't be so insufferably dull. All that discipline's left them starved for a little debauchery. What's the harm? He smiles and nods toward something O.S. and CAMERA PANS to reveal the Rebel Worker, chained with his wrists above his head to a lamppost, limp with thirst. DISSOLVE TO: 84 EXT. SMALLVILLE CHURCH - DAY #5 84(X) It's plastered with big signs, in English and Kryptonian, reading "Forbidden." CAMERA MOVES to the sidewalk, where (X) Lois and Clark push brooms, watched by two Guards. As the (X) Guards move on, Lois and Clark hustle to the side of the Church. CAMERA MOVES IN as Clark looks thoughtfully at the ground, X-RAYING a spot, as: LOIS From what I've been able to pick up, the master plan is to force city after city to surrender, Metropolis being first on the list. Clark twists the pipe to shut the water off. CLARK We've gotta get some water to all these people. SMALLVILLE - TOWN SQUARE - JONATHAN - DAY 87 A water jug's been fashioned from a length of inner tube, tied at either end with rope. A stopper is inserted in the hole in the tube through which water can be released. Jonathan comes to a Citizen, waits for a Guard to pass, then stops, seeming to have a chat, but really releasing water into the Citizen's cup. PAN to another Volunteer surreptitiously dispensing water into a tin cup being held by a parched Townsperson. FIND Lois and Martha, who nervously make their way toward the end of the square across from the Town Hall. They stop, staring at "Target Practice." A short stone monument, surmounted by a bronze bust, sits near the lamppost where the Rebel Worker is still chained. As he watches in horror, and Ran looks on, Drull blows a frigid, lethal-looking (X) blast of Cold Breath at the monument. --page break-- "LORD OF THE FLYS" (#1) Pink Rev. 7/18/96 50. 88 88 THRU OMITTED THRU 89 89 90 THE MONUMENT - DAY 90 It is instantly covered in white frost. Now Ran hits it with a golf club, and the bust shatters like glass. He smiles over at the Rebel Worker. RAN Excellent. A most efficient manner of execution. REBEL WORKER No... please.... I'm begging you... RAN (to Guard) Position yourself. 91 LOIS AND MARTHA 91 MARTHA (quietly) I guess it's time, dear. (loudly) What do you mean accusing me?! LOIS (furiously) You heard me! I saw all that food you're hoarding! It's not fair! The crowd nearby takes notice, begins buzzing. MARTHA (to crowd) She's lying! LOIS I saw it myself. MARTHA (shoving Lois) Liar! And Lois takes a swing at Martha, who ducks! As the Kryptonians stare at the mob, something BLURS vertically down into FRAME, then at the lamppost and out of FRAME. The Rebel worker is gone. The shackles hang from the lamppost. 94 TOWN SQUARE - TIGHT ON CROWD - DAY 94 Lois melts back behind the gazebo as guards separate fighting Townspeople. NOR (O.S.) _Stop_ _at_ _once_!! CAMERA WHIP PANS to find Nor standing outside the Town Hall door. The mob fall silent. NOR (CONT'D) Ran! Drull! Do you see what's happened?! He gestures, and... 95 NEW ANGLE 95 Reveals the empty flagpole. Nor furiously comes down the steps and turns on Ran and Drull. NOR You fools! You've lost control of these wretches. RAN We'll find him, Lord Nor. NOR It's not just the worthless prisoner... The whole mood of the town is changing. And I believe I know why. I've just received some disturbing news. He glances back toward the Town Hall doorway and nods to Jen Mai, lurking there. NOR (CONT'D) From an unimpeachable source. (shouting) Jonathan and Martha Kent! Lois stares, terrified. NOR (privately, to his men) Let's see how much he cares for Mum and Dad. (loud, to Kents) I said you'd be the first to go, if I didn't get what I want! Well, what... I... want... is.. (loud) Kal El! (beat) Lord Kal El!! I know you're among us! Jonathan and Martha are shoved to the steps of the town hall. A frightened BUZZ from the Townspeople. NOR (CONT'D) I'm waiting, Kal El. I assure you, my credentials in the field of excruciating death are impeccable. Ran and Drull pull bizarre, Kryptonian, dagger-like weapons on the Kents. 97 AN ALLEYWAY - DAY 97 Clark, pulling off cap, steps slowly from the shadows, and is immediately grabbed by two Guards. He instinctively shakes them off and starts forward, but the daggers are (X) pressed against his parents and he stops. CLARK What do you want with me, Nor? Fearful guards approach him, but are afraid to actually (X) touch. (X) NOR Oh, where do I start? I want your throne, Kal El. And I want your world. And I want you gone. Forever.
