UPSCALE HOUSE - NIGHT #1 1 We hear the FAINT STRAINS of a treacly version of "Feelings" OVER a shot of a quiet, tree lined street in a residential neighborhood. A well dressed, middle aged man (DOUGLAS SANBORN) comes out of the house and walks to a car parked in front. As he gets in the car, a rocket propelled grenade STREAKS into frame from the other side of the street and SLAMS into the car. A tremendous EXPLOSION lights up the night. 2 REVERSE ANGLE 2 to see a fragile, old man (HENRY BLACKSTOCK) standing on the other side of the street holding a grenade launcher. The music here is slightly louder since it is emanating from a set of headphones that Henry is wearing. He has a blank look on his face as he casually tosses the weapon to the ground and walks away into the night. 3 EXT. METROPOLIS NEUROSCIENCE CENTER - ESTABLISHING - DAY #2 3 PANNING the pastoral setting. Finely trimmed lawns and manicured hedges. The CAMERA FINDS CLARK standing outside the office, talking to a handsome man in his mid 30s. This is DR. MAXWELL DETER. CLARK ... and I've heard this is one of the best facilities in the country for treating memory loss. DETER We've had a lot of success, but you have to understand it's not an exact science. Miss Lane's memory could pop back in tomorrow, or it could be lost forever. CLARK (optimistic) But there's a good chance that Lois will fully recover, isn't there? (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 2. 3 CONTINUED: 3 DETER I'm hopeful, but there are no guarantees. Clark puts his hand on Deter's shoulder. CLARK Doctor, I'm counting on you. This is the woman I love. DETER I know, and it's important that you don't tell her that. CLARK What? DETER Revelations that are deeply emotional have unpredictable consequences. The shock could be too much for her to deal with. Before Clark can say anything, LOIS steps out of the office and crosses over to Clark and Deter. LOIS All checked in. I never thought I'd end up in a mental institution. CLARK Uh, Lois... this is Dr. Deter. LOIS (embarrassed) Sorry, I didn't mean anything... DETER (smiling) That's alright. We're happy that you're here. Mr. Kent's told me all about you. LOIS Then you know a lot more about me than I do. DETER We're going to work very hard to change all that. CLARK Dr. Deter was just showing me around the Center. I think you'll like it here. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 3. 3 CONTINUED: 2 3 LOIS (not convinced) Sure. DETER (to Lois) We want you to consider this your home, but there are a few rules. Mr. Kent will be permitted to visit every other day, but there will be no other visitors for the next two weeks. Also, you're not allowed to leave the grounds for the first month. LOIS Sounds kind of severe. DETER It's very important to control your exposure to outside stimuli. MAN (O.S.) Dr. Deter? Lois and the nurse turn to see Henry Blackstock, the old man with the grenade launcher from the night before. He has a twinkle in his eye and a lilt in his voice. BLACKSTOCK Aren't you going to introduce me to this beautiful young lady? DETER Lois, this is Mr. Blackstock. (beat) Henry, this is Lois Lane. BLACKSTOCK It's nice to meet you, Lois. LOIS (smiling) Nice to meet you too, Henry. BLACKSTOCK Maybe some morning you and I could split a prune danish. LOIS (flirtatious) If you play your cards right. Blackstock winks at her and moves away. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 4. 3 CONTINUED: 3 3 DETER Our resident Lothario. (beat, to Lois) I want to start your therapy as soon as possible. CLARK It's time for me to go. Doctor, I hope this doesn't count as an official visit. Deter shakes his head. CLARK (CONT'D) Good. (to Lois) So, I'll see you later. LOIS Okay. Thanks for everything... uh... CLARK Clark. LOIS Yeah, Clark. 4 ON CLARK'S SAD AND TROUBLED FACE... 4 FADE OUT _END TEASE_ --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 5. _ACT ONE_ FADE IN: 5 INT. DAILY PLANET - PERRY'S OFFICE - MORNING 5 PERRY is sitting behind his desk, having a testy conversation with an attractive woman in her 50s, SALLY REYNOLDS. PERRY I'm sorry if the Mayor doesn't like my editorials, but there's this thing called the First Amendment... SALLY No one is questioning your rights, but the Mayor thinks you're treading on dangerous ground when you link local businessmen to Intergang. PERRY And if I'm not mistaken, most of those businessmen were contributors to her campaign. SALLY You could be opening yourself up to a slander lawsuit. PERRY Tell the Mayor my mitt is oiled and my cleats are sharpened. If she wants to play hard ball, she's come to the right guy. Sally nods as she stands. SALLY Thank you for your time, Mr. White. I'm sure you'll be hearing from me. She briskly exits Perry's office, leaving him shaking his head. A beat later, Clark enters. CLARK Is this a bad time? PERRY The Mayor thinks she can send her hatchet man in and... CLARK She's fairly attractive for a hatchet man. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 6. 5 CONTINUED: 5 PERRY I didn't notice. CLARK (sarcastic) Right. PERRY (changing the subject) Did you get Lois checked into that clinic? CLARK (nodding) It looks like a country club. PERRY Good. I want her to have the best of everything. In the meantime, we've got a paper to put out. I want you to cover the Sanborn murder, that is if you're up to it. CLARK (nodding) Nothing like a murder to help me take my mind off Lois. 6 EXT. CENTER - ESTABLISHING - MORNING 6 7 INT. CENTER - DR. MENDENHALL'S OFFICE - DAY 7 Deter is in a plush but functional office, talking to an imposing looking man in his 60s. This is DR. ELIAS MENDENHALL, the founder of The Center. He is tall with sharp features that make him look like a majestic eagle, or a vulture waiting to swoop down on some unsuspecting prey. Mendenhall is reading from Lois's file. MENDENHALL It looks like Miss Lane had quite an exciting few days before joining us here. Kidnapped at her wedding... stalked by a clone... on the run with a ruthless crime lord. DETER She's not our run of the mill patient. MENDENHALL She appears to be a good candidate for my research program. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 7. 7 CONTINUED: 7 DETER I thought all of your research dealt with behavior modification. How would that apply to Lois? MENDENHALL I'm broadening my study to include behavior reconstruction, which should compliment your treatments in memory recovery. DETER (smiling) It sounds promising. MENDENHALL (smiling) It is. 8 EXT. SANBORN'S HOUSE - DAY 8 The street is cordoned off by yellow police tape. A few POLICEMEN are milling around the charred remains of the car, taking pictures and gathering evidence. Clark ducks under the tape, waving to the DETECTIVE who is running the investigation. CLARK McCloskey. You caught this one? The detective nods and indicates the car. McCLOSKEY Pretty ugly way to go, huh? CLARK At least it was quick. I heard they weren't able to pull any prints off the grenade launcher. McCLOSKEY And the ID number was filed off. It was clean as a newborn. CLARK Any ideas who might've done this? McCLOSKEY Had to be a real pro. Your average drive by doesn't usually involve a rocket propelled grenade. McCloskey points across the street. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 8. 8 CONTINUED: 8 McCLOSKEY (CONT'D) We figure the shooter was standing over by that tree. We scoured the entire area but couldn't find a thing that was useful. One of the policemen signals to McCloskey, who walks toward the house. Clark goes over to the tree and tips down his glasses to SUPER SCAN the area. The only things that look somewhat suspicious are a few small, odd shaped seed pods. Clark picks them up for a better look, then heads toward McCloskey to share his findings. 9 EXT. CENTER GROUNDS - AFTERNOON 9 Lois and Deter are walking through the grounds. DETER You're very lucky that Dr. Mendenhall is going to assist in your treatment. He's working on a new program that should help to speed up your recovery. LOIS I'll take all the help I can get. They pass by a WORKMAN on a ladder who is fixing a security camera mounted atop a tall wrought iron fence that runs around the entire Center. LOIS (CONT'D) Why the fence and security cameras? DETER They keep unwanted visitors out and roaming patients in. Just then, a MALE NURSE wheels a near comatose Henry Blackstock out of the building and toward a waiting ambulance. A sweet, old woman (AGNES MOSKOWITZ) is walking beside him, dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief. She has a slight twitch. LOIS My God, it's Henry. Deter and Lois intercept Henry, Agnes and the nurse. DETER Agnes, what happened? AGNES He just had a stroke. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 9. 9 CONTINUED: 9 Lois crouches down in front of Henry, who is staring blankly off into space and wordlessly moving his lips. AGNES (CONT'D) This morning he was so full of life, and now look at him. Lois notices a reddish dot about the size of a nickel just under the thinning hair on each of Henry's temples. As the nurse loads Henry into the back of the ambulance, Lois stands to face Agnes. LOIS I'm so sorry. DETER Agnes, this is Lois Lane. She's a new patient. AGNES Welcome to the Center. I'm Agnes Moskowitz. DETER Agnes is a patient of Dr. Mendenhall. AGNES The man's a life saver. Five months ago I was twitching so badly I could barely get out a full sentence. Now look at me. I'm almost cured. Agnes sadly watches the ambulance drive away. LOIS Agnes, maybe you and I could have breakfast together tomorrow and then you could show me around... give me the 'inside tips' on this place. AGNES (smiling) I'd be happy to, dear. Agnes moves off. DETER You have quite a way with people. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 10. 9 CONTINUED: 2 9 LOIS Do I? It's so frustrating to discover fragments about yourself but have no idea what the big picture looks like. DETER That's exactly why you're here. He gently puts his fingers on either side of her head, lightly stroking her temples. DETER (CONT'D) I m going to get inside your head and find the seed of your memory. Then together we will water it, nurture it, and make it grow. LOIS (quietly) What if you can't find the seed? Deter slowly lets his hands fall from Lois's temples to rest on her shoulders. DETER You're going to help me. As I probe, you'll be there to guide me, which will require total trust and honesty on your part. Can you handle that? LOIS To be honest with you, I have no idea. Deter removes his hands from Lois's shoulder and smiles. DETER Then you and I will find out together. LOIS (smiling) I guess we will. DISSOLVE: 10 INT. NURSE (pointed) Careful, doctor. Before Deter can respond... CLARK (O.S.) Dr. Deter. Deter turns to see Clark coming up the hallway, carrying a bright bouquet of blue and yellow flowers. CLARK (CONT'D) How was Lois's first day? DETER Productive. We're peeling away the damaged layers and getting to the core of her being. CLARK The core of her being. Maybe when you discover what that is, you could let me know. It might come in handy after we're married. DETER When you see her, remember that it's critical you don't mention your relationship, personal or professional. It would be best if you kept this visit short. CLARK (with a slight edge) Got it. Five minutes on the weather and I'm out of here. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 12. 10 CONTINUED: 2 10 DETER Sorry. LOIS'S ROOM - NIGHT 11 Lois is flipping through a copy of the Daily Planet when Clark comes in. She stands and takes the flowers from him. LOIS These are beautiful. CLARK Forget-me-nots. How are you doing? LOIS Okay. (beat) You know, I can't believe I write for the Planet. The front page is good, but the metro section leaves a lot to be desired, and the movie critic; who-does he think he is? (beat-realizing) No offense. He's probably a friend of yours. As a matter of fact, he's probably a friend of mine. CLARK He doesn't have any friends. He's a jerk. LOIS At least my instincts are still working. (she points to the paper) This story on Superman really stunned me. What is he, some kind of alien? CLARK (nodding) He's from a planet called Krypton. You and he are friends. CLARK (down playing it) It's just another murder. No big deal. LOIS It's a big deal to Sanborn. How's your investigation coming? CLARK (evasive) Slow. The police don't have a lot of leads. So, how are you liking the Center? I hear they show first run movies in the rec hall. LOIS It wouldn't matter if they were classics; they'd still be first run to me. Now, let's get back to Sanborn. Do you think it was a business deal gone bad or a crime of passion? CLARK I have no idea. Why don't we forget about that right now and. talk about you. LOIS Because until I get my memory back, there's not a lot to talk about. Clark suddenly hears a DISTANT CALL for help. CLARK I just remembered I've got to go. LOIS Go where? Clark winces, knowing how lame this sounds. CLARK (nodding) Regatta thing. LOIS (buying it) Well, have a good time... Lois makes the "'flying gesture." Clark leans over to give her a kiss on the lips, and Lois moves her head to the side, so Clark's kiss falls on her cheek. He gives her a quick peck and pulls away, embarrassed. CLARK See you soon. LOIS Okay. 12 INT. DR. MENDENHALL'S OFFICE - SAME TIME - NIGHT 12 The rear portion of Mendenhall's office is set up for his treatment sessions, complete with various pieces of medical machinery. Mendenhall places a set of headphones on Agnes and starts a portable tape player. We HEAR the familiar tune of "Feelings" seep out of the headphones. MENDENHALL (CONT'D) Isn't that nice? Agnes smiles and mouths the words to "Feelings." Mendenhall flips open a panel on the front of the EEG machine and pushes a button. Suddenly, the line on the monitor begins to move in erratic spikes. 14 CLOSE ON AGNES 14 whose body starts to shake-and her eyes pop open. 15 BACK TO MENDENHALL 15 MENDENHALL Finally, a little television. McCLOSKEY Great way to start your morning, isn't it Kent? CLARK What can you give me? McCloskey flips open his notebook. McCLOSKEY Victim's name was Roger Stephens. He left Casey's Pub around eleven and when he walked by the alley he was hit with eighteen rounds from a Glock Automatic. CLARK Any leads? McCLOSKEY (shaking his head) The gun was left behind, just like with Sanborn. No prints and no serial number on the piece. CLARK Could it be the same shooter? McCLOSKEY Could be. We're checking our hot list for military vets. This guy knows his way around hardware. McCloskey moves off to deal with one of the policemen and Clark uses his SUPER VISION to scan the alley. Amidst the garbage and debris he sees a few of the tiny pods that he found near Sanborn's. He puts a couple in his pocket and the rest he holds out. CLARK Detective. The police lab said they're from a rare plant called a scarlet posidium. JIMMY Do you think the murderer left these as his calling card? CLARK Either that, or they were left there by accident. (beat) What's the run down on Stephens? JIMMY He was a senior VP with a big construction company downtown. JIMMY (to Clark) She wants to talk about the editorial. CLARK (nods) Strictly business. Perry shakes his head as he exits. Clark grabs his coat. JIMMY Going to see Lois? SUPERMAN (reluctant) Well, I did hear that another man was killed last night and the cases could be related. LOIS (jazzed) That's more like it. What else? SUPERMAN The police found some unusual seed pods at the crime scene. As a matter of fact, Clark gave me one to show you. Superman pulls one of the pods out of his cape and hands it to Lois. She thoughtfully turns it over in her hands. Just then, Deter comes striding over. Lois drops the pod into her sweater pocket. DETER Superman. It's a surprise to see _you_ here. SUPERMAN I was just flying by and thought I'd say hello to Lois. DETER Unfortunately Lois is not allowed any visitors. SUPERMAN Sorry. I didn't mean to break any rules. One ROBBER is holding a gun on the cashier, emptying the till. The other ROBBER is going from table to table, stripping the patrons of their money and other valuables. 24 INTERCUT ANGLE ON PERRY AND SALLY 24 who sit at a table, their hands in the air. SALLY I can't believe this. In broad daylight. PERRY Maybe if the Mayor didn't cut back the police force by fifteen percent, this wouldn't be happening. SALLY It's not her fault that she inherited a massive budget deficit when she took office. A tough situation called for tough decisions. The robber is suddenly at their table, sticking a gun in Perry's face. ROBBER Do you know how hard it is to pull a robbery when you two won't shut up? Perry is on his feet in a flash, swinging out with a right cross. The robber turns just in time to take the punch on the jaw. It SNAPS back the robber's head, and a thin trickle of blood goes down his chin, but the robber stays on his feet. He actually smiles. ROBBER (CONT'D) I hate heroes. He brings up his gun and levels it at Perry's chest. SALLY My God. No! The robber FIRES! At the same instant, there is a BLUE BLUR and Superman is standing there, holding the bullet in his hand. SUPERMAN (to the robber) I believe this is yours. He drops the bullet to the ground, CRUSHES the robber's gun, then grabs him and raises him into the air with one hand. The other robber tries to make a break for it, but Superman reaches out and grabs him with the other hand. SUPERMAN (CONT'D) Time to put out the trash. DETER ... and I want you to imagine that the tree is growing taller. As it grows, so does your memory. Picture a beautiful little girl with dark hair, waking up on Christmas morning, getting her first bike. Lois smiles. DETER (CONT'D) Visualize yourself as that girl and tell me what you are feeling. LOIS (hesitantly at first) Excitement. Happiness. Disappointment. DETER Disappointment? LOIS I really wanted a red bike. I got a yellow one. DETER (looking into her eyes) You're the only one. This is what Lois wanted to hear, but she is still a little taken aback. LOIS I don't know what to say. DETER And I'm afraid I've said too much. Doctors aren't supposed to get emotionally involved with their patients. LOIS Is that what you are? Emotionally involved? Deter looks at Lois for a beat, then changes the subject. DETER Tell me what you think of the corned beef. Lois bites into her sandwich. She swallows and smiles. LOIS I love it. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 27. 27 CONTINUED: 2 27 DETER I knew you would. (casually) How was your visit yesterday with Mr. Kent? LOIS Nice. He seems like a very nice man. DETER What did you two talk about? LOIS (shrugs) This and that. DETER Lois. Honesty and trust. Lois sighs and nods. LOIS We talked a little about a story he's working on. (beat) A homicide. Deter shakes his head. DETER I specifically told him _not_ to discuss your work. It's too soon. LOIS (reacting) He didn't want to. I had to drag it out of him. DETER (patiently) Lois, your memories have to flow back in slowly, or else you could counteract everything we're doing here. LOIS (chastised) I'm sorry. I didn't think it would hurt. There's a moment of awkward silence. Deter reaches over and takes Lois's hands in his. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Lois looks down at their hands and then up to Deter's face and she smiles. DISSOLVE: 28 INT. LOIS'S ROOM - LATER THAT DAY 28 Lois enters the room and moves to a full length mirror. She looks at herself, striking different poses, trying to get a handle on what feels most natural. LOIS Who are you? As she stares at her reflection, she notices a red stain on the sleeve of her sweater. She frowns and takes off her sweater. As she does, the seed pod from Superman falls out of the pocket and onto the bed. Lois picks up the pod, holding it in her hand. Suddenly, the pod splits, spilling out red pollen onto Lois's hand. Lois wipes off the pollen on a towel that is sitting on the dresser, and as she does, she notices that it has left the same red stain on the towel as on her sweater. The wheels start turning in Lois's head. 29 EXT. CENTER GROUNDS - LATE AFTERNOON 29 It's dusk and the grounds are fairly deserted. Lois is back at the site of the picnic, looking around for the seed pods. She finds a few smashed pods on the ground and picks one up. It is half full of the red pollen. LOIS I feel like Nancy Drew... (beat; confused) ... whoever that is. Lois looks around the area and spots a large bush near the fence that is in bloom with red flowers. She casually walks over to the bush and sees that it is covered with seed pods. LOIS (CONT'D) Bingo. Lois quickly ducks in behind the bush. To her surprise, she finds a gate built into the fence. She tries it and it opens easily. Lois quietly shuts the gate and backs out of the bush. As she does, she backs right into Dr. Mendenhall. (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. I was just admiring this beautiful bush. MENDENHALL It is lovely, isn't it. I'm glad I found you. I thought we could start your treatments. LOIS Now? MENDENHALL (nodding) I see no reason to wait. LOIS (shrugs) Sure. Why not? PUSH IN on Mendenhall's smiling face. FADE OUT _END ACT TWO_ --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 30. _ACT THREE_ FADE IN: 30 EXT. CENTER GROUNDS - NEXT MORNING - DAY #4 30 Deter is sitting on a bench overlooking a pond. CLARK (O.S.) Dr. Deter? Deter turns his head to see Clark join him on the bench. DETER I'm glad you could come. We need to talk. CLARK (concerned) Is everything alright with Lois? I was just on my way to see her. DETER I don't think that would be such a good idea. CLARK (reacting) What do you mean? DETER Lois is in a very delicate state right now. I am trying to lead her down the path to recovery, but you are pulling her toward confusion and mental chaos. CLARK (reacts) Me? DETER I told you that any conversations about Lois's personal or professional life could have a severe negative impact on her treatment. CLARK (chastised) I know that, but I thought... (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 31. 30 CONTINUED: 30 DETER (interrupting) You come in here and talk about murder investigations, and suddenly, Lois could start fantasizing that she's back at the Planet, working on a story. She's not ready for that yet. CLARK Alright, I promise, no more business. DETER That's not good enough. CLARK (angry) Wait a minute. You can't stop me from seeing her. DETER Yes I can, unless you want to put her under the care of another doctor. It's your choice. Clark is conflicted. After a moment of staring across the pond... CLARK Okay, I'll back off, but the second she makes some progress, I want to be there for her. DETER (smiling) Of course. Just remember that I'm only thinking about what's best for Lois. 31 CLOSE ON LOIS'S FACE - DAY 31 which is vibrating from the electrodes coming from Dr. Mendenhall's machine. She is wearing a set of headphones that are once again playing "Feelings" and her eyes are open wide watching the TV set in front of her. (Note: we do not see the TV screen). 32 PULL BACK 32 to see that she is sitting in Mendenhall's office, getting "zapped" while Mendenhall talks on the phone. The contract will be carried out in another day or so, providing you deliver the money by six o'clock tonight. (beat; tougher) Sorry, this is a cash only business. One of my clients tried to pass me a bad check and they never found his body. (beat) Just leave the money at the drop site, and the rest will be handled. He hangs up the phone and gets up, crossing over to the EEG monitor, which is spiking. He checks his watch. MENDENHALL (CONT'D) That should be enough for today. He dials down the input and turns off the TV set. As he does, Lois's face relaxes, and her eyes close. He removes the electrodes from her temples. MENDENHALL (CONT'D) (softly) Lois. Lois. Lois slowly opens her eyes, which have trouble focusing. She's in a daze. MENDENHALL (CONT'D) Your treatment is coming along very well. LOIS (spacy) That's good... Mendenhall helps her out of her chair. MENDENHALL You go on back to your room now and rest. Lois nods and heads for the door. 33 EXT. CLARK'S APARTMENT - ESTABLISHING - DAY 33 CLARK (O.S.) ... and he suspended my visiting rights. --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 33. 34 INT. CLARK'S APARTMENT - DAY 34 Clark is pacing in the living room, talking to MARTHA and JONATHAN. JONATHAN He can't do that, can he? CLARK (shrugs) He's the doctor. MARTHA Well, maybe you _should_ back off a little bit, sweetheart. CLARK But I need to be there for her. I need to hold her and tell her everything's going to be alright. Instead, she's turning to Dr. Deter. How long do I have to sit by and watch? JONATHAN Only until she gets her memory back. Then everything will be normal again. CLARK The doctor said there's a chance that she might never regain her memory. MARTHA Which is all the more reason that you have to listen to him. When someone you love is sick, your first instinct is to comfort them, but sometimes you need to back off and give them the space they need to recover. I'm afraid I've got to go with Lois's doctor on this one, honey. CLARK I know you're right, but I still don't like it. JONATHAN Just because Clark can't visit, doesn't mean that Superman can't check up on her from time to time. Clark smiles. --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. He says something that makes Lois laugh. She reaches over and touches his arm and he smiles at her. 38 BACK TO SUPERMAN 38 who is miserable, pining away. DISSOLVE: 39 INT. CENTER - HALLWAY - EARLY EVENING - NIGHT #4 39 Lois is walking down the hall when she sees Nurse Reilly coming out of a patient's room, carrying some clothing. NURSE Evening, Lois. LOIS Hi. Are those Agnes's clothes? NURSE (nodding) I'm afraid so. She had a stroke early this morning and was taken to County General. LOIS (shocked) A stroke? NURSE She was such a sweet thing. The saddest part is, Dr. Mendenhall was doing so well with her. LOIS Was Dr. Mendenhall also treating Henry Blackstock? (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 35. 39 CONTINUED: 39 NURSE (nods) I heard that Mr. Blackstock lapsed into a coma. Life can be so unfair. As Nurse Reilly continues down the hall, Lois casually approaches Mendenhall's office. She tries the door, which is locked. She looks around and spots a food tray in the hallway. She stares at the tray for a moment, then instinctively picks up a fork. She looks at the fork in her hand, wondering what good it is, then, as if her hands had a life of their own, she bends one of the tines outward and shoves it into the lock on Mendenhall's door. After a few tense moments, the lock springs. Lois is surprised, but is quite happy with herself as she enters Mendenhall's office. 40 INT. MENDENHALL'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS - NIGHT 40 Lois flips on Mendenhall's desk lamp. LOIS First I break in and now I'm about to dig through this man's office. How can something so wrong feel so right? She sits down in Mendenhall's chair and starts going through his drawers. In a moment she comes to a locked drawer. LOIS (CONT'D) Aha. Lois finds a paper clip and twists it around. She puts it into the lock and a second later, the drawer slides open. LOIS (CONT'D) Maybe I'm a reporter by day and a cat burglar by night. Lois pulls out a telephone, followed by a stack of file folders. The one on top is labeled "Lois Lane." 41 INTERCUT TIGHT SHOT OF FILES 41 Lois opens the file to see a notation that reads, "behav. mod. trtmnt 7b." Lois flips to the next file, which is labeled, "Agnes Moskowitz." Her sheet also indicates "behav. mod. trtmnt 7b." At the bottom of her sheet are the scary words, "Treatment terminated." Lois quickly flips open the next file, which belongs to Henry Blackstock. Her eyes go immediately to the bottom line, "Treatment terminated." --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. He has a huge stack of books on psychiatry and memory loss which he is SUPER SPEED READING while casually munching away on a slice of pizza. He stops at one article and reads aloud. CLARK '... and the American Medical Association says Dr. Maxwell Deter's techniques are both ground breaking and effective.' (beat) They forgot slow and frustrating. There's a KNOCK. Clark puts down his book and crosses over to open the door. He's stunned as Lois strides in, talking as she enters. LOIS (fast) Something's going on and I needed to talk to someone, and you seemed like the most logical person. Thank God you were listed in the phone book. (beat) That pizza smells good. Can I have a piece? Clark is standing there, speechless. LOIS (CONT'D) The pizza? CLARK (snapping out of it) Sure, have as much as you want. LOIS Thanks. Lois grabs a piece and takes a bite. As she does, Clark realizes that there are several photos of Lois and him around the apartment. CLARK There's a soda in the refrigerator. Help yourself. As Lois crosses to the refrigerator, Clark SUPER SPEEDS throughout the apartment, scooping up all the photos and putting them into a drawer. Lois turns. LOIS (CONT'D) I felt a draft. Is there a window open? CLARK I don't think so. (beat) I can't believe you're here. I thought you weren't supposed to leave the Center. LOIS I get the feeling that I'm not the kind of person who's very good with rules. (looking around) This place is kind of sparse. No pictures? CLARK I don't photograph very well. LOIS Superman came to see me yesterday. Did you tell him I was there? CLARK (nods) Was that okay? LOIS Yeah. It was nice to meet him, and nice of you to think of me. CLARK (longing) I'm always thinking about you. LOIS That must make your girlfriend mad. (beat) I assume you have a girlfriend. CLARK I do. She's great. Clark moves closer to her. Anyway, Superman gave me one of those pods from the murder scene and I think I found the plant it came from. CLARK (surprised) You did? LOIS It's at the Center, and get this... it's right in front of a secret gate. CLARK A secret gate? LOIS That's how I snuck out. Do you think the murderer could have something to do with the Center? CLARK It's possible, I guess. LOIS There's more. Something very weird is going on with Dr. Mendenhall. Two of his patients have had strokes since I've been there. I did a little digging around and discovered that he had three other patients who suffered from strokes in the past year. She pulls a list out of her pocket and hands it to Clark. Mendenhall could be doing some dangerous kind of experiments that fry people's brains and... Clark suddenly realizes that Lois has crossed over the bounds of reality. CLARK Okay, I'll check it out, but first, we've got to get you back to the Center. LOIS Back to the Center? Didn't you hear anything I said? CLARK I heard it all, but I think Dr. Deter will be very worried if he finds out you're missing. LOIS Why are you always like this? CLARK Like what? LOIS Small minded. CLARK I am not. LOIS Yes you are. You're unwilling to believe anything that doesn't fit into a neat little package. CLARK How can you say that? (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. Rosenberg 1/23/96 40. 43 CONTINUED: 4 43 LOIS Because it's so obvious. You're afraid to play outside of the rules. Why can't you open yourself up and be a little impulsive once in a while? CLARK (caught up in the argument) You mean like you? You don't even bother breaking the rules anymore; you threw the rule book away a long time ago. LOIS You're darn right, and that's the way I'm going to keep playing the game. I don't need your help to investigate what's happening at the Center. I can do it myself. As Lois turns to leave, Clark realizes what has just gone on and grabs her arm. CLARK Hold it. Did you hear what you were saying? She pulls her arm away. LOIS I lost my memory, not my hearing. CLARK _That_ was the old Lois. She stops and thinks about this for a moment, then nods. LOIS Fortunately, I liked what I heard. She turns to leave again. CLARK Don't leave. Let's talk about it. Superman comes FLOATING down, landing next to Lois. She is startled. LOIS Superman. SUPERMAN Hello, Lois. Can I give you a lift somewhere? LOIS (confused) Do you have a car? SUPERMAN (smiling) No, I mean a lift. He gently scoops her up in his arms. She's a little scared. LOIS I don't know about this. Is it safe? SUPERMAN A lot safer than the cabs in this town. LOIS (smiling) What the heck. Let's do it. Superman slowly takes to the air, lovingly looking at Lois who is in awe of the fact that she is flying. DISSOLVE: --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. LOIS Just how well do we know each other? SUPERMAN I hope that someday very soon you'll remember. Sleep tight. Superman slowly RISES up into the night sky, leaving behind a very impressed Lois. LOIS (softly) Wow. 46 INT. MENDENHALL'S OFFICE - SAME TIME 46 Mendenhall is on the phone. MENDENHALL Yes, I got the money. By this time tomorrow, Perry White will be dead. DETER I thought you had a session with Dr. Mendenhall this morning. LOIS I don't want to go. DETER (surprised) Why not? LOIS He... scares me. Deter moves in closer to Lois. DETER Elias Mendenhall is a great doctor. There's no reason for you to fear him. LOIS Maybe not, but I do. Now Deter is very close to her. DETER Your mind is going through a lot right now and you're a little confused. You know that I'd never let Dr. Mendenhall, or anyone, hurt you. You have to trust me. Lois reaches out and pulls Deter in for a tight hug. LOIS Thank you... for everything. I don't know what I'd do without you. DETER Don't worry. I'll always be here for you. (beat) Now go. GROUNDS - CLARK'S POV 64 Several OLD PEOPLE armed with heavy artillery are converging upon Mendenhall's office. CLARK Mendenhall must've brainwashed them to protect him and the song is their trigger. Another burst of gunfire rips into the office. Lois flinches as the bullets fly around here. DETER What are we going to do? CLARK You stay here with Lois. I'll be right back. Deter takes Lois in his arms as Clark dashes out of the office, pulling at his tie as he goes. 65 EXT. GROUNDS - MOMENTS LATER 65 The zombie like army is descending on the office as Superman lands in front of them. SUPERMAN Please, drop your weapons. The gun toting geriatrics do just the opposite, raising up their assorted artillery and BLASTING Superman with everything they have. When the dust clears, Superman is unscathed. He BLURS through the crowd and a moment later, he has their entire cache of weapons, which he crushes into a huge metallic ball and hurls out into space. As the patients continue to advance upon him, he uses his HEAT VISION to melt down all of the speakers in the compound, bringing the music to a halt. CENTER OUTSIDE THE GATES - DAY 66 Superman lands in front of a dark sedan, jarring the car to a sudden halt, then walks around to the driver's side and YANKS Mendenhall out of the car. Mendenhall cowers in fear. A moment later, a police SIREN sounds in the distance. SUPERMAN I'll make sure that wherever you end up, they pump 'Feelings' into your cell, day and night. Mendenhall slumps over in defeat. 67 INT. HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER 67 Clark is running down the hall and meets Deter and Lois as they come out of Mendenhall's office. CLARK Are you alright? DETER (nodding) Luckily Superman showed up. I better go talk to the police. As Deter hurries down the hallway, Lois walks up to Clark. CLARK How are you doing? LOIS Okay. For a minute there, it felt like I was back covering that riot at the University. CLARK (hopeful) The University? LOIS (nodding) Sure. Don't you remember? The students were marching on the administration building, then the police showed up with tear gas... (MORE) (CONTINUED) --page break-- "FORGET ME NOT" (#18) G. I was wearing my blue silk blouse and a little silver pin on the lapel of my jacket... (emotional) Clark! I remember! She runs into his arms and they briefly hug. LOIS (CONT'D) (excited) It must've been the gunfire that jarred my memory back. This is fantastic! CLARK (happily) You're not kidding. LOIS I feel like someone just opened a door and I walked through into the light. (she points to herself) Lois Lane. (she points to Clark) Clark Kent. We're partners at the Planet. I like spicy Chinese food. CLARK Now we can get our lives back on track. LOIS (nodding) The first thing I need to do is get something off my chest. Since we're partners and everything, can I trust you with a secret? CLARK Of course. LOIS I think I'm in love. CLARK (beaming) I know you're in love. LOIS It's that obvious? CLARK (confused) Him? LOIS (smiling) The man who threw me a lifeline and pulled me back into the world of reality... Maxwell Deter. Clark is stunned. Deter comes walking down the hall and Lois looks over in his direction with an adoring smile on her face. FADE OUT _THE END_
