VAN - DAY - CONTINUOUS 2 STANLEY GABLES, somewhat eccentric, 40ish, sits in the passenger seat. Seated behind the steering wheel is ALBIE SWINSON, 30's, Stanley's loyal assistant. Stanley opens a (X) large jar of Vitamin C and pops several into his mouth. (X) GABLES You realize that getting rid of Mayson Drake only solved half our problems. ALBIE We have people out looking for the pill, sir. GABLES I don't want looking. I want finding. Let's go. Albie drops the Van in gear and slowly accelerates. 3 EXT. CEMETERY - DAY - CONTINUOUS 3 As the mourners file past Mayson's coffin, paying their final respects, Lois walks over to Clark who stands silently by the coffin and gently places her hand an his shoulder. As she passes a plot, (#29B) she HEARS the SOUND of MOANS emanating from an unattended coffin lying by an open grave. As she cautiously approaches, Gable's Van rolls to a stop in the b.g. Suddenly the coffin starts to shake. Lois reaches down and pulls open the lid, revealing... 6 THE CORPSE 6 his eyes suddenly pop open. He reacts with confusion and terror At the sight of Lois. 7 ON LOIS 7 equally terrified, unable to produce anything but a silent scream. She slams the lid and runs back towards the funeral. He removes a large purple pill from a plastic container, flings open the lid and quickly crams the pill down the groggy corpse's throat. 9 INT. VAN - DAY - CONTINUOUS 9 Albie hops back into the limo and starts it up thru... ALBIE Sorry, Mister Gables. Just a little mistake with the original dosage. GABLES (cynical) A little mistake. Albie if Resurrection is to succeed, I can't afford any more corpses waking up. (threatening) And neither can you. ALBIE Yes sir. As Albie maneuvers the van down the path... The two grave diggers, CRAVEN and AL tend to the grave. Al sits behind the controls of an earth mover as Craven stands off to the side with a shovel. As the earth mover ROARS to life, lifting dirt and dumping it into the grave, Lois returns with Clark in tow. She gestures wildly to the grave diggers amid the NOISE. LOIS (shouting over the roar) Hey! Wait! Stop! Craven gestures to Al to cut the engine. He does. CRAVEN You got a problem, lady? LOIS The body you just buried is still alive. He opened his eyes and looked at me. Craven just shoots her a look, then starts to shovel some dirt into the grave. LOIS (CONT'D) Hey! I know what I saw! (grabbing Craven's shovel) Dig him up! CRAVEN Lady, they don't pay me enough for this aggravation. Craven grabs his shovel back as Clark looks down into the grave using his X-RAY VISION thru... LOIS (O.S.) (to Craven) Doesn't it bother you the tiniest bit you could have buried a man who is still alive? Clark sees the body lying totally motionless and at peace. CRAVEN Look, I got a work order to plant this guy in 29B. Clark is at his desk deeply engrossed in his work as Perry approaches. PERRY How are you holding up, son? (no response) Clark? CLARK Huh? Oh, okay I guess. PERRY Howls the story coming? PERRY (CONT'D) Oh, by the way, there's a federal agent from the DEA coming by later today looking into Mayson's murder. Maybe he can shed some light on your investigation. LOIS Why's the DEA involved? PERRY Don't know. Could be they think it's mob related. Mayson made quite a few enemies with Intergang. CLARK Maybe if I can get into her office. Go through her files. PERRY Police have it cordoned off. (beat, then) But then, when has a little police tape ever stopped you two before? Lois and Clark and Perry exchange a conspiratorial smile. CUT TO: 12 INT. OFFICE HALLWAY - DAY - LATER 12 Lois and Clark, disguised as office cleaners, push a cart filled with cleaning supplies down the hall to Mayson's office. The door is padlocked. CLARK (holding up paper clip) This shouldn't take long. As he turns to the door, an office worker passes, taking a bite out of a sandwich. The worker tosses what's left of his sandwich into the wastebasket hanging on Lois' cart. It hits the side and lands on the floor. Oblivious, he keeps going. Lois reacts, annoyed. LOIS Excuse me! The worker turns and eyes her. Clark shoots her a look to avoid confrontation. She takes a beat, then, forcing a smile... LOIS (CONT'D) Thank you. ... and gingerly picks up the sandwich, dumping it into the wastebasket. Clark turns back to the door and, pretending to use the paper clip, quickly breaks the lock with two fingers. LOIS (CONT'D) Sometimes I think you're in the wrong profession. 13 INT. MAYSON'S OFFICE - DAY - CONTINUOUS 13 Lois and Clark slip into the office, closing the door behind them. He goes to a file cabinet, she to the desk. CLARK See if you can find some connection to Intergang or what she meant by 'resurrection.' My guess is it would be something she worked on recently. Clark SPEED READS the files. Lois scans the desk top. Her eyes rest on a file marked STANLEY GABLES. LOIS Here's something she received the day before she died. It's a file on someone named Stanley Gables. CLARK Anything about Intergang or resurrection? (Lois shakes her head) Keep looking. Lois moves aside a law book and finds a half-eaten meatball hero. She picks it up. (CONTINUED) --page break-- RESURRECTION (#17) FULL Pink Rev. 2/6/95 9. 13 CONTINUED: 13 LOIS How's this for recent? (Clark comes over) It's still warm. CLARK A meatball sandwich? MAN (O.S.) Molinaro's. Best in the city. Lois and Clark react as DAN SCARDINO jumps down from an (X) open ceiling panel, and lands in front of them, wielding a gun the size of Cleveland. He's about thirty, rugged good looks, well built and oddly enough, is also dressed in the same office cleaner outfit as they are. (X) SCARDINO (CONT'D) (X) (re: sandwich) Go ahead. Take a bite. They also got a veal and peppers that'll knock your socks off. CLARK Who are you? SCARDINO (X) The cleaning man. Who are _you_? Lois tries to placate him while inching her way toward the door with Clark. LOIS The cleaning _woman_. How's that for a coincidence? We're all cleaners. Guess the agency overbooked. Scardino shakes his head and cocks the gun, stopping her. (X) SCARDINO (X) Y'know, I'm a very sensitive guy. (X) I just hate it when people lie to (X) me. LOIS But you don't mind lying yourself. MAYSON'S OFFICE - DAY - MOMENTS LATER 14 Lois and Clark are tied back to back on two chairs as Scardino rifles through Mayson's desk. (X) SCARDINO (X) I don't want you to get the wrong impression. I really am a fun guy. You should see me at parties. He finds a small black diary. Slips it into his jacket. As he heads for the window... SCARDINO (CONT'D) (X) (to Lois) You know, you have the most incredible eyes. He pulls up the shade revealing an open window and a rope hanging down outside. He gets up on the window sill. As he grabs the rope... SCARDINO (CONT'D) (X) Well, it's been real. And don't forget. Check out Molinaro's... when you're not so... tied up. He lowers himself out of sight. Clark quickly pulls his (X) hands loose. CLARK (re: getting untied) Guess he was never a boy scout. (untying Lois) Call the police. I'm going after him. (X) As Clark turns to leave, a SECURITY GUARD on a routine check opens the office door, seeing our heroes, he pulls his gun. GUARD (sarcastic) I'm sure you two have a good reason for breakin' in here. LOIS Would you believe, the place was really dirty? CUT TO: --page break-- RESURRECTION (#17) FULL Pink Rev. 2/6/95 11. 15 INT. DAILY PLANET BULLPEN - DAY - LATER 15 Lois and Clark sit across from a Planet sketch artist. As they talk, the artist sketches on a drawing pad. CLARK His eyes were brown. Dark brown and shifty. LOIS I wouldn't call them shifty, exactly. But they were soft... and warm. The artist looks up at Lois, then over to Clark. CLARK Just brown. Thin lips. Hard set jaw. LOIS I wouldn't say hard. More like... chiseled. And his lips had this cute little way of curling up when he smiled. Clark shoots Lois an exasperated look. She's got to be (X) kidding. The artist makes a few more scribbles on his sketch pad then turns it to Lois and Clark. It's a cartoon caricature with exaggerated features. LOIS (CONT'D) Who's that supposed to be?! Bugs Bunny?! MAC Hey! I'm an editorial cartoonist. (X) You want a portrait, get a camera! (X) PERRY (O.S.) Lois, Clark! In my office. (X) 16 INT. PERRY'S OFFICE - DAY - CONTINUOUS 16 Perry stands in the doorway as Lois and Clark enter. PERRY Agent Scardino, I'd like you to meet Lois Lane and Clark Kent. (X) Lois and Clark are taken aback when they see who's inside the office. Only now, dressed in loud Hawaiian shirt, jeans and cowboy boots. SCARDINO (X) (grinning broadly) Small world! PERRY You know each other? LOIS Agent Scardino? (X) Scardino takes her hand in his. There's an instant (X) physical attraction between them. SCARDINO (X) Please. Call me Daniel. LOIS You always leave by the window? SCARDINO (X) I left my macaroni salad on the mezzanine. (X) CLARK (annoyed) Why didn't you identify yourself in Mayson's office? SCARDINO (X) (playful) What? And spoil all our fun? (then) Come to think of it, Kent, I don't remember you or Miss Lane here whipping out any press credentials either. PERRY Obviously I've missed something. Is there some kind of problem here? CLARK There is, if Agent Scardino is (X) Washington's idea of solving Mayson's murder. SCARDINO (X) (mainly to Lois) (X) Washington has nothing to do with it. In fact, they sort of suggested I keep my distance. She can't help but smile. He's handsome and amusing. (X) CLARK (sarcastic) Gee, I find that hard to believe. LOIS (intrigued) (X) If you're not here officially, why are you here? SCARDINO (X) Because I know who designed the bomb that killed Mayson Drake. A con by the name of Sean Mallory. PERRY The guy responsible for that (X) series of drug related bombings in (X) '89? SCARDINO (X) The same. I lost someone very close to me in one of those bombings. CLARK I thought Mallory died in prison three weeks ago? SCARDINO (X) So they say. The hit on the D.A. says otherwise. I know Mallory's M.O. like the back of my hand. I was the one who put him in prison. Somehow he's out there again. And I'm gonna nail him. CLARK So, your idea of solving Mayson's murder is looking for a dead man? SCARDINO (X) I guess you could say that. MALLORY'S FRONT PORCH - DAY - LATER 18 Lois and Clark sit on wicker chairs looking at a photo album and chatting with Sean's mother, MRS. MALLORY. MALLORY ... and that's a picture of Sean when he was ten. We took that the day before he blew up the garage. Look at those dimples. He was such a cute baby. LOIS (wryly) Adorable. MRS. MALLORY And really a wonderful son. Actually Sean is responsible for my taking up needle point. After he went to prison I had to find some way to support myself. (re: her needlepoint) Now I sell these at swap meets. CLARK Um, Mrs. Mallory, did Sean have any close friends. MRS. MALLORY I'm afraid little Sean didn't make friends easily. She bends down and pulls a stack of handwritten letters tied with a blue ribbon from a cardboard box filled with memorabilia. We HEAR the WHISTLE of a TEA KETTLE. MRS. MALLORY (CONT'D) Oh, tea's ready. I'll be right back. As she puts the letters on the wicker table between them our heroes are surprised to SEE A LARGE TATTOO on the inside of her forearm that says "Sonny Boy" encircled by a heart. As she exits into the house Lois and Clark exchange a look, then Lois pulls out an envelope. LOIS (eyeing the postmark) Here's one he wrote the day before he died. (pulls out letter) 'Dear Mom. Thanks for the argyles and the Maalox...' She quickly skims the letter silently. Then... LOIS (CONT'D) Clark. Listen to this. 'This is probably the last letter I will be writing you from prison. If you don't hear from me for a while -- or ever again -- don't worry. Just know that I am in a far better place... I CLARK Sounds like a man who knew he was going to die. LOIS Pretty sad. As Clark looks at the letter, his SUPER HEARING picks up a TICKING SOUND. Using his X-RAY VISION, he LOOKS THROUGH THE FLOORBOARDS and sees an INCENDIARY DEVICE under the porch. CLARK Um, Lois... I'm going to wash up. He rushes into the house, loosening his tie, passing Mrs. Mallory on her way out with a tray of tea and cookies. --page break-- RESURRECTION (#17) FULL Pink Rev. 2/6/95 17. 18C ANOTHER ANGLE 18C As Mrs. Mallory sets the tray on the wicker table, SUPERMAN CRASHES thru the porch floorboards several feet behind her. As she turns in surprise SUPERMAN FLOATS UP through the hole amid a cloud of smoke, holding the spent device in his hands. LOIS Superman. What happened? SUPERMAN I was in the area when I spotted this incendiary device under the porch. It was capable of burning down this entire house within minutes. MRS. MALLORY Oh my. Well I'm very grateful to you Superman. Would you like a cookie? SUPERMAN No thank you, ma'am. I'm watching my calories. I'll have someone come around tomorrow to fix your floorboards. Have a nice day. Superman takes off. MRS. MALLORY. My... he's quite a big boy. Clark comes out of the house and eyes the hole in the porch floor. CLARK What happened? LOIS Clark, someone tried to burn down this house. MRS. MALLORY But that sexy Superman fellow was in the area and saved us. I'm a bit weak in the knees. Maybe I should go lie down for a while. As she starts to walk off somewhat in a daze... MRS. MALLORY (CONT'D) Why would anyone want to burn down this old house? STANLEY'S LIVING ROOM - DAY 21 A large room with an ornate fireplace in the corner. Expensively furnished and impeccably neat and clean. The room is filled with exotic plants, many in bloom. On an oversized ornate desk is a large screen computer. A top of the line treadmill is next to the desk. Gables sits at a table eating a plate of green nondescript vegetables and reading a magazine, as Albie enters. ALBIE (X) How's your seaweed sir? (X) GABLES (X) I hate it. (X) ALBIE (X) I know sir, but the doctors said (X) you need the iodine and B-6. (X) GABLES Look at this, Albie... (reading) 'Brilliant scientist invents new diet pill.' Anything that had a reference to _resurrection_. LOIS I hope you're hungry. Clark puts his books down and sits on the sofa. Lois puts the hors d'ouvres on the table. It was Mayson's favorite movie. LOIS (impressed) Really? Nice work. CUT TO: 26 INT. STANLEY'S LIVING ROOM - DAY - LATER 26 DIEGO MARTINEZ, the 'corpse' we saw in the coffin, and (X) Mallory sit around the table going over the plans for the (X) break-in. Gables is on a massage table, face down, stripped (X) to his waist. A patch of blistered skin is evident on his (X) left scapular. Several ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES stick out of (X) his back. Albie stands over him. Throughout the scene (X) Albie will slowly put more needles in his back. (X) GABLES (X) See the basement? Starlabs has a (X) sub-zero chamber there. That's (X) where they store the virus. (X) DIEGO How do we get to it? GABLES There's an air vent that leads directly to the chamber. Then, once I have the virus, we're unstoppable. MALLORY Exactly what makes this virus so special? CABLES It's airborne and it's lethal. And there's no antidote. (drops file on her desk) Diego Martinez was serving twenty years for bank robber. The guy was an expert at getting past security systems. Except the last time. LOIS Look at this. It says he was in good health, but under cause of death they have 'unknown.' JIMMY That's because there wasn't an autopsy. Budget cuts. The guy at the prison infirmary says they send the bodies directly out to the cemeteries. Jimmy exits as Lois spots Clark approaching, deeply (X) engrossed in a fax. LOIS What's that? CLARK Dr. Hamilton faxed over his report on that pill we found in Mayson's car. (hands her fax) It's a form of synthetic barbiturate. Taken in large enough doses, it could produce a temporary state of suspended animation. (X) Lois takes a beat, her eyes going from the fax to Martinez' file. Then... I know this is kind of out there, but what if Mayson found out that someone was using this pill to get criminals out of prison by making it appear they died? CLARK (X) It is out there. SUNSHINE, 30's enters. Elegantly dressed in black, Sunshine is professionally solicitous. He carries with him a large, leather folder. MR. SUNSHINE So sorry to have kept you waiting. I'm Mr. Sunshine. Please, accept my condolences at this difficult time. Was the dear departed a relative? CLARK LOIS My uncle. My aunt. LOIS (trying to cover) He... he was a cross dresser. As Mr. Sunshine pulls out a brochure from his folder, Lois and Clark exchange a look. They must get a look inside that folder. Mr. Sunshine hands the brochure to Lois. MR. SUNSHINE (CONT'D) Now... I have only three words to say... Location -- Location -- Location. The plot is everything. LOIS I see. Um... I was interested in some of those caskets over there. Could you show them to me? She indicates an area away from his folder. MR. SUNSHINE Well, those _are_ the economy models.... but it would be my pleasure. Sunshine reluctantly leads Lois away from the folder, allowing Clark to stealthily flip through it thru... MR. SUNSHINE (CONT'D) Frankly, those models offer very little moisture protection. They're just slightly better than a Ziplock bag. He senses Clark's not with them and starts to turn back. Lois grabs his arm, steering him to a nearby coffin. LOIS What about this one? All three of the prisoner's funerals were paid for by a man named Albie Swinson. I'm going to call Jimmy, see what he can find on this guy. LOIS I'll meet you at 29B. If someone _is_ digging these guys up, maybe I can find some evidence. As they leave, we see Craven the grave digger off to the side, watching them. CUT TO: --page break-- RESURRECTION (#17) FULL Pink Rev. 2/6/95 37. 35 EXT. CEMETERY - PLOT 29B - DAY - A LITTLE LATER 35 Lois kneels at the grave, eyeing the dirt for any signs of disruption. A BACKHOE digs another grave fifty yards away. The SOUND covers the approach of Craven in an EARTH MOVER. Craven aims the earth mover towards the unsuspecting Lois, then hops off and runs away. 35A ANOTHER ANGLE 35A Clark's rounding a crypt when he spots the earth mover bearing down on Lois. He rips for his shirt as he steps back behind the crypt. 35B ANOTHER ANGLE 35B The earth mover's just about upon Lois before she hears it and glances over her shoulder. The earth mover looms up behind her. As she starts to rise, Dan Scardino appears (X) from out of nowhere and scoops Lois out of the way as the earth mover misses them by inches. 35C ANOTHER ANGLE 35C A BLUR OF BLUE and SUPERMAN lands in front of the unmanned machine. He leans against it until the machine GRINDS To A HALT. He then hurries over to... 35D LOIS AND SCARDINO 35D disentangling themselves. SUPERMAN (to Lois) Are you okay, Lois? LOIS I guess so... We HEAR the SOUND of a SHOWER. 39 ON LIVING ROOM WINDOW 39 as a hand appears and slowly opens it from the outside. Someone is breaking in from the fire escape! 40 ON LOIS 40 in the shower. She turns off the water and steps out. 41 RESUME LIVING ROOM 41 The INTRUDER'S SHADOW flickers across the wall. 42 ON LOIS 42 wrapped in a towel, drying her hair. Suddenly, she hears a noise coming from the living room. STARLABS LOBBY - DAY - SAME TIME 61D Mallory positions himself under an airvent in the lobby, then lifts Big Buster above his head. Locked. He withdraws a COBRA PICK it looks like a chrome plated electric toothbrush inserts it into the lock, and pulls the trigger. It vibrates for a few seconds. The lock opens. Inside the panel is a tangle of wires and circuitry. Diego pops a disk from the unit and replaces it with one of his own. The light on the security system goes from red to green. He turns to Gables, who's watching as Mallory boosts Buster into the open air vent. DIEGO Done. The Security system is down. Mallory hands Big Buster a small bomb. MALLORY Remember, stick this right on the freezer lock, otherwise the blast won't be big enough to open it. Big Buster nods, takes the bomb, then... GABLES You're sure you know the way to the sub-zero chamber? BIG BUSTER Don't worry, I know my job. Just be on the roof in five minutes. And with that, Big Buster disappears up into the air vent. As Mallory and Diego reach down and pull Big Buster out... BIG BUSTER Sorry it took so long. I made a wrong turn over the second floor. They set him down on the roof. He hands a sealed VIAL to Gables, who smiles. GABLES Everyone loves a good Steven King novel. Now this city is going to live one. Buster slips on his mask as Gables struggles to pop open the vial's seal. Suddenly there's a WHOOSH and they turn to find... 72A ANOTHER ANGLE 72A ... Superman on the roof. SUPERMAN I wonder if the prison has a lost and found department. Diego, Mallory and Big Buster exchange a look, then rush for the roof's exit door. As they disappear... GABLES I guess I didn't pay them enough for loyalty. No matter. Their masks are defective. They'll die along with everybody else. Superman takes a step towards Gables but stops as Gables manages to break the seal on the vial. Only his thumb holds the covering in place over the vial. SUPERMAN Give me the vial, Gables. I am a victim. Justice will be served. SUPERMAN It's not justice when innocent people are made to suffer for your mistakes. But Gable is beyond reason. He raises the vial above his head. GABLES They all deserve to die! Before Superman can react, Gables smashes the vial on the roof. Thousands of SPARKLING BLUE PARTICLES spread into the air. As Gables laughs... 73 EXT. STARLABS ENTRANCE - DAY - SAME TIME 73 A car SQUEALS up to the front just as Mallory, Diego and Big Buster exit the building. Scardino hops from the car and (X) gives chase to Malloy. As they disappear around the side of the building, Albie tackles Diego as Lois takes Big Buster out with one well placed chi-like kick. 73A EXT. STARLABS ROOF - DAY - SAME TIME 73A Superman watches helplessly as the virus expands, then... inspiration. He SUPERSPEEDS around the virus, creating a vortex encircling the particles. When the BLUE BLUR stops, we see he's turned the virus into a mini TORNADO. FLYING beneath the tornado, he uses his SUPERBREATH to guide it away from the roof. Gables sinks to his knees in defeat as Superman propels the tornado towards the sky. GABLES No.... no! 73B EXT. SPACE - (STOCK) 73B Superman propels the tornado into the blackness of space, then ceases his SUPERBREATH.
