...DC have apparently decided that what Wonder Woman really needs is a dark gritty background. In which the foundations of Amazon society are VERY dark indeed.

Yet another comic I will not be reading.

[Thud] YIKES! [Shock] [Jawdrop] What's wrong over at DC Comics? Have they been invaded by a Marvel mole bent on destroying them? First Superman, now Wonder Woman? Are they going to have Batman responsible for killing his parents next? [Huh]

I don't suppose this is a slightly belated April Fools' joke? No, I didn't think so.

I've never particularly been a Wonder Woman fan to begin with, but even if I had been, I would not be buying the new comics now.

The creators of the New 52 obviously do not consider me to be in their target demographic. When the trade paperback comes out with the first several Superman stories, I do plan to borrow it from the library, but I am not terribly sanguine about it.

Oh well. There's always plenty of back issues of other versions of Superman available.

Joy,
Lynn

Sounds like DC is on a downward spiral and is getting desperate.

Fascinating. Always just watched from afar, so...

The revised history sounds like a very realistic approach to mythology. One still has to retcon Hepheistos, but how about:

The Amazons are the origin of the myth of the sirens, beautiful women luring and killing sailors. The boys are then sold to Hepheistos, who's either a regular slaver or a warlord using child-soldiers.

[Huh] Michael

Actually, from the comic panels I've seen online, Hephaestos/Hephaistos raises the male children and teaches them to be smiths. And they're actually happy with him, and ask WW to release him after she has him captured in her lasso.

My view on the recent changes to Wonder Woman might be slightly different to what I read in the linked article.

First of all, I really like the idea of WW being a daughter of Zeus. It's much more convincing than the whole 'made of clay' bull**** DC had going on before.

However, I'm not too happy with the change to Amazonian society. Sure, before 52, it was sickeningly utopian, but now it's the very opposite of that. Couldn't the writers at DC have gone a middle route? Like, have Amazons who want to procreate go out into "Man's World" and do what needs to be done without killing the man afterwards?

Also, I'm not so sure about the plotholes the author of the article mentions. The way she explains it, WW must be dumb beyond belief to not notice what her Amazon sisters are up to. However, this is not necessarily the case. For one, according to the comic, Amazons only seek mates three times a century, meaning every 33 years on average. What if Diana is around 20 in this reboot, and the next procreation cycle is about to start soon? She'd have been born around the time the latest youngsters were 12 to 13 years old. Let's say she doesn't really pay attention to age differences until she's 3 - that would make the young Amazons about 15 to 16 years old. In ancient Greece, young girls were usually married (and thus considered adults) before they were 16.

Also, why would someone who has never seen a baby or younger child than herself ask where babies come from? (After all, she was raised believing that she was actually made of clay. That is, until her mother dropped the bombshell of her parentage on her.)

However, there is another plothole nobody seems to notice: Hephaestos raises all the Amazon boys by himself. Considering there must have been several boys born every 33 years (or so), the poor god must've had his hands quite full.

[Jawdrop] This version is creepy to say the least. Nothing against adult themes in general but it's impossible to rewrite an established character and change its whole background without affecting the character's identity and morality - probably what drew fans in the first place.

Wonder Woman is now a member of an extremist feminist cult(ure) who believes in the superiority of women over men and exerts that belief by means of seduction, murder and enslavement. Yeah, definitely something people will want to read about. [Wallbash]

Seriously, though, what's going on at DC HQ?!

I've been wondering about that for some time now. I guess they are pretty desperate with WW, after Gail Simone pretty much wrote/drove the character against the wall. (Plus, I think I read that WW doesn't sell all that well...)

If my kids were younger, of the age to read comics, I wouldn't let them touch this one with a ten foot pole.

Nan, your kids are too old to read comics? [Shock] I didn't realize that there was an age limit! Nobody told me! Oh, my goodness, have I broken this law? [Big Grin] [Wink]

My daughter (7)and son (4)LOVE the Avengers tv show and recently asked if there were any Justice League or Wonder Woman shows they could watch. I checked the ratings for the Wonder Woman cartoon and saw it was PG-13 (Thank you, Cartoon Network [Grumble] [Razz] )! I told them NO, sorry, not available. Then rented them Super Friends (1977) [Thumbsup] which they loved!
